The Good Thief (2002)
You can't cast the worst French comedians and make them speak English for the entire movie
It really wasn't fun to watch people I thought I admired like Nick Nolte or Emir Kusturica make total asses of themselves. So I left after thirty minutes wishing I'd chosen to watch Dumb and Dumber that was showing in the same theater.
La vie sexuelle des Belges 1950-1978 (1994)
From the comic book store to the theater
Before he made movies, Jan Bucquoy was a famous and controversial comic book writer. Based on Vidon and Bucquoy's original graphic novel "La vie sexuelle de JP Leureux, Tout va bien",this first feature is a touching mix of Cynicism and dead pan humor. The story revolves around the chronological thread of the various women of the narrator's life. Whereas the original comic book was built on a succession of many quick portraits and short cynical reappraisals, the film comes out as single ongoing framework, sarcastic, yet tainted with nostalgia. Overwhelmingly successful at indy film festivals around the world, its obscure and rather limited distribution seem to ad a certain cult value. You won't find the video tape at Blockbuster's, but it's out there...
Camping Cosmos (1996)
Herge...not
This second opus of "The Sex life of the Belgians" is one of the most entertaining piece Bucquoy delivered so far. In an almost mainstream colorful setup, the director takes us deep into shameless Belgian trailer park culture. Summer camp sized, the belgo-bucquoy society including its regular nefarious revolutionary characters and adult-fake Tintin is quiet enjoyable. Featuring a couple of neat local celebrities such as Arno or Noel Godin (totally insane as usual), and dead but cult figure, the hyper breasted Lolo Ferrari.
