The Devil's Rejects (2005)
Zombie shocker-- what else would you expect
Fancy making your life shorter by wasting some time on this little gem of a film? Yes? - Then there is no hope for you I'm afraid; just give up now. If the answer is no - well thats different. I watched this on the TV on Saturday night and this film is simply awful. It had potential with the story and settings but threw it all away with non existent acting. Poor poor directing. Mis casting of good actors and a completely ruined balancer between humour and horror. It just ends up being neither. But hey don't just take my word for it. I watched this with four of my friends and two got up and left the front room in the middle. One left leaving me on my own 10 minutes before the end of the film. And me for my sins watched the ending and went to sleep feeling quite depressed. Oh yes the story. A group of sick violent poor actors mutilate a sheriffs brother and lots of other people, go on a killing spree in America and get killed in the end by the sheriff. For the males amongst us you get to see some full nudity and a pretty psycho girl who kills and gets her butt out a lot. But for women I fail to see why you would even bother with this rubbish. I've had more fun cutting my toenails and watching them get washed down the plughole when I turn on the tap.... - Well you get the idea.
The above review was taken from a Mr Gary Brown from Norwich and Amazon.co.uk. Im afraid i could not write a review for this movie. Maybe its the cans of Carlsberg I've just consumed or the fact I've just watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre the beginning whilst still being a bit drunk. Either way i can not come up with words to describe these kind of god awful movies so i am resorting to using other peoples reviews! Enjoy!!
The Longshots (2008)
The sleeper hit of 2008!!
In brief Longshots is the classic underdog story but with a few twists. Not only do we have a young, struggling,American rugby team we also have the struggle of a young girl trying to earn respect and gain a place in this young, struggling,American rugby team.
People may think they have seen hundreds of these types of films before, Mighty Duck's (the ice hockey one with Billy the Kid as the head coach) and Little Giant's (the American rugby one with Louis Tully as the head coach) to name two off the top of my head. Longshots however is a different breed of animal. The powerhouse performance of Ice Cube accompanied with the fantastic direction of Fred Durst makes this film a must see.
Ice Cube plays Curtis Plummer, a down and out with little in his life except American football and alcohol. He has a distant relationship with his niece, Jasmine Plummer, until fate brings them closer together. It is at this point that Curtis Plummer realises his young niece has a talent for throwing a Rugby ball a long way very accurately!. Without spoiling the rest of the film Ice Cube basically becomes a Yoda figure to Jasmine Plummer and trains her in the art of throwing a Rugby ball without going to the dark side (Laces out Dan!).
This film goes on to teach us a valuable life lesson. In one scene we have Curtis Plummer a smelling, dirty, down and out looking at the horrible state he has let himself become in a mirror. Whilst looking into this mirror and deep into his own heart does Curtis decide to change his ways? become a better uncle to Jasmine? become a role model to all those other down and outs around him? NO!!! he simply changes his shirt and puts on a bowler-esquire type hat. The message this gives to the young generation out there is that a small change can be all that is needed in life.
After raving about this film you may wonder why i did not give this film 10 stars. Well my only niggle with The Longshots is the soundtrack. Instead of the kids winning their first American rugby game and a mediocre run of the mill instrumental accompanying the scene why not add Ice Cubes own masterpiece Roll All Day to make this a truly epic scene and epic film!
For this film to be at a meager 2.7 on IMDb is a utter disgrace. What Durst,Cube and Cube vision have created is a minor miracle. GO BUY IT!
xXx: State of the Union (2005)
XXX has to save the day against arch enemy the US Government!
Hot on the heels of O'Shea Jackson's last epic (the ultimate actioneer that is Torque!)comes XXX-The Next Level. This time XXX has to have more attitude and be more dangerous, hence the casting of O'Shea Jackson(Ice cube to most of the world).
Without going into detail (i wouldn't want to spoil this film for anyone) this film is a cinematic masterpiece. With Ice Cube using his full range of acting skills he manages to evoke emotions not felt since the opening sequence of Star Wars - A New Hope. What we have is a roller-coaster of a film with action, romance, comedy and more action.
Mr Cube is supported by talent such as Samuel L Jackson , Willem Defoe and Xzibit so no expense was spared by director Lee Tamahori. With a script written by Simon Kinberg (who has gone on to write scripts for smaller films such as Jumper and Mr & Mrs Smith) we have a complex yet enjoyable plot to follow.
All in all i can not recommend this movie enough, no words that i write can describe what a masterpiece this film is. This will surely go down in history as a classic alongside greats such as Shawshank, Godfather and All About the Benjamins (Damn!!) Please watch and enjoy!!
