A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
One of the best films of all time.
I love this film today as much as I did the first time I saw it as a small child.
I won't go into great detail as others have, I will simply say that if you have never seen this gem of a movie, make sure you do as soon as possible.
There are wonderful little bits in it that make me feel all warm inside. At the beginning there is an animation of the earth from the aspect of space. In 1946 they had no clue what our planet looked like, so they guessed and got it wildly wrong. Also the Directors' decision to make earth colour and heaven black & white was genius, the complete opposite from the same effect used in the Wizard of Oz.
I have seen this film countless times and will never tire of it.
Soldier of God (2005)
Disappointing and thoroughly pointless.
Before watching this film, leave behind any references to The Kingdom Heaven. This is an extremely low budget film shot somewhere in the desert (certainly not the judean desert) and with no sets to speak of. The film gives the impression it's going to lead you to some profound revelation at some point. This never happens and by the end I was left feeling cheated that I struggled through Rene's (The Templar) rare, mumbled, accented dialogue for nothing. I will never cease to be amazed at how easily some film goers are pleased. The reviews that paint this as some sort of beautiful, well acted, historical treat are myopic in my opinion and I am being kind. This was an awkward, pointless film, with a pointless story.
