The House of the Devil (2009)
Now THIS is a horror movie!
Believe the hype ladies and gentlemen, because it is true. I too was a bit skeptical of all the "lost 80s classic" being thrown around, having been suckered too many times to count. But in the case of "The House of the Devil" it is all justified. In fact, I might go so far as to say this film is currently UNDERRATED. Ti West seems to have tapped a nerve in my brain for horror, because this film has a lot of the elements I feel are missing from today's current crop of fright films. Instead of masturbatory gore, cheap gimmicks, or computer graphics, this film relies on character, atmosphere, suspense, tension, and one of the most shocking endings of all time to scare you! I am sure this won't be everyone's cup of tea, as it is slow moving and very methodical, but true fans of horror will notice right off the bat that this is the real thing. You don't just stumble your way into writing/directing/editing a genre film of this caliber. Ti West is a real student of horror, and shows it off in spades with this film.
Sonic Outlaws (1995)
Excellent documentary on sampling / cut ups + much more
Craig Baldwin's Sonic Outlaws is one of the best documentaries i've seen, a psychedelic blending of media commentary / music politics. Even if you aren't a fan of these bands or never heard of them, this is an essential film about subversive electronic music and social satire using mainstream media outlets. The band Negativland is put on full display here, and their infamous troubles with Island records resulting in a career breaking lawsuit are well documented. The whole film is presenting in the style of a noisy cut up, jumping back and forth between taped telephone calls and sonic distortion to the talking heads and archive footage. Anyone interested in sampling, copyright laws, media criticism, noise, or video art should put this one on their 'to see list'
