Polite Society (2023)
So fun! Hot Fuzz meets Crazy Rich Asians
This movie is a hilarious story of sisterly love and roundhouse kicks. It represents many of the things I love- female friendship, martial arts and fast focus pulls for jokes. I love the friend characters and wild tone. I found that our main character Rhea took a few too many hits for my liking - I would prefer she punch more. But the acting and especially the SOUND DESIGN made this a laugh out loud flick. I love it to death.
They use jokes about period and heavy flows, but the film deals with using women's bodies as vessels and as tools of power. While Rhea is perusing a life as a stuntwoman, pushing her body as a tool of violence, her sister is being perused as a vessel for a clone! The twist was fun, the acting sold it and the fast cuts remind me a lot of Sean of the Dead.
Would watch again.
Cow (2021)
It's not propaganda, it's vérité
Do you eat dairy? This film is for you.
I will never be the same after this film. I was already a fan of Arnold, but this film wrecked me. There is no gratuitous violence, just the truth. The empathy you feel for these intelligent beings in inescapable. This is a brave film. Watch it if you're brave.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
If Michel Gondry directed the Matrix
Michele Yeoh shines in this insane freaking film. The love scenes, especially, make this worth it. But I'd recommend seeing it sober.
This is the story of a girl, who cried a river and drowned the whole world .
Cryptozoo (2021)
A Stunning dream I will never forget
I watched this in a theater and was slack jawed with awe the entire time. The art, the music, it's simply incredible. I can't say it's like anything I've ever seen. If you love art watch this film.
The Red House (1947)
First-Rate Bucolic Horror from the 40s!
Criminally unknown, this country thriller from Edward G Robinson Will leave you shaking. Audiences in the 40s simply weren't ready for this early precursor to Winters Bone and Gone Girl. If you can stand the messy technicolor (resultant of many fast and cheap reproductions) this film is a must see! Impeccable acting, masterful tension and a mind blowing twist.
Contos do Amanhã (2020)
Low budget, high quality GEM of Brazilian Sci fi
Do you know how hard it is to make a quality sci fi feature without a studio budget? Nearly impossible . But Pedro de Lima Marques does it. With solid acting, music, gorgeous effects and an excellent twilight zone style twist, this movie has it all. Fans of sci fi and psychological thrillers will want to check this out. I was lucky enough to see it at the Richmond International Film Festival. I am so lucky to get to see sci fi from around the world.
LFG (2021)
Trolls will try, women will WIN
I cried tears of pride and joy and anger many times watching this. An absolute 10 of a documentary. And then to see the pathetic sexist trolls dragging the rating with their feelings was both a shock and a reminder that we still live in the stone ages. These one star ratings are from little overemotional boys who can't separate their insecurity from filmmaking. How can anyone watch this and say "these women should shut up?" GOD! Each one of you would square up with Megan Rapinoe in a field shoot out match and see how you feel. How can you be against equal pay for these incredibly talented women? Arguably some of the most well-known athletes in the world? Winners far more than the men? And somehow he feel the need to drag down the ratings on this phone because it makes you feel like more than a man? How many more years but we have to live like this? I'm glad I watch this film I'm grateful for it. I highly recommend it. I hope other women and like-minded Film lovers will add more appropriate ratings that reflect the quality of this film making.
La tortue rouge (2016)
A stunningly animated communion with nature
Studio Ghibli's dialogue free foray outside the bounds is a huge win. This film kept me rapt with breathtaking colors and imagery, a story of mans relationship with nature. Far further than castaway. It explores love, beauty, family and of course turtles. It feels like a fable you can't fully understand. Worth a watch for all ages. Incredibly moving.
The Field Trip (2021)
Riotously funny, wonderfully wholesome
I can't explain in words why it is so funny to see 10 year olds deal with check fraud sincerely, you have to watch this short for yourself.
The Eagle Huntress (2016)
"Enchanting Girl Power"
Aishoplan, our 13 year old heroine, is as powerful as the scenery and her young eaglet, fighting misogyny and -40 degree weather in Mongolia. I had tears in my eyes many times, filled with pride and awe. This is the epitome of uplifting - watch when you need to feel inspired.
The Nightingale (2018)
Gripping and Bloody
Superb acting shines through every seen, Dani ferns and dripping blood. Director Jennifer Kent's choice of 4:3 aspect ratio adds a layer of confinement to this terrifying historical story of colonialism and evil. Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking. A take of revenge and genocide that deserves praise.
Vi är bäst! (2013)
Pure friendship and Punk
Adorable. Smiling from ear to ear the whole movie. I laughed out loud 4 times. This film is an incredibly true to life story of friendship in seventh grade. The three young Swedish girls represent a wide range of personality types and there sweetness and friendship is so relatable and pure. Their performances are subtle and real. Highly recommend to all lovers of female fronted and a girl bands. Me myself I became a DJ in my early 20s because I loved all girl band and talk so very much. The story feels very close to home and in reminds me of what it might be like for Kleenex or girls in our best to be practicing. This film is an incredibly true to life story of friendship in seventh grade. Da zui xia (1966)
Fantastic girl power, stunts and gore
This 60s film was extremely impactful in its use of camera movement, luxurious sets, the rooftop scenes are even imitated in crouching Tiger hidden Dragon. Early Wuxia required watching. Required watching for any lovers of martial arts films or feminist heroes!
Biho sangjaeng (1977)
The story of a martial art developed by a woman!!
Amazing story, that needed to be told. While the pacing and editing might be a challenge for some people, the quality of these fighting scenes along with the strong feminist storytelling make this required watching for all lovers of kung fu movies.
The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
Delightful RomCom Mis-sold as sci fi
While I live PKD dearly, this film is much more a story about two star crossed lovers than your traditional mind bender. The use of special effects is subtle and just enough. Emily Blunt is the ultimate babe, high recommend. Sadly this film was marketed as an action thriller, when in fact it's a heartwarming love story.
