I Care a Lot (2020)
Terrible people vs stupid people
I came in knowing that I would hate the main character, that's what the movie was going for, but making them irredeemably loathsome was a bit much. This countered by the comically stupid and incompetent gangsters pushed it over the edge and at 40 minutes in, I had to turn it off. It had the potential to be a really interesting take on a serious topic, but just cranked the dumb cartoon aspects up so high it was insulting to watch.
I'm also disappointed that they went for the evil gays trope in 2020. Hollywood needs to do better.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
The Monday drinking game
1. Every time one of the commandos is incredibly inept, have a shot.
2. Every time one of the siblings has better luck than Domino (from deadpool 2) have a shot.
3. Every time the CAB forgets the tech they used in a previous scene, have a shot.
I'm one hour in, and if I were playing this game, I'd probably be dead.
Like, seriously, the world is overpopulated, overlord government agencies would have the pick of the litter, why are all the shutins living on 1/7th the resources using better tech than the government, out fighting commandos, and surviving 4 story falls into empty dumpsters? Seriously, the overlords should just clone these siblings and use them as their murdersquads.
This writing is trash, bring a six pack and a friend, and have a good time making fun of it while you watch it.
I don't get the 1s and 10s in the reviews here, this is a solid 6 effort if you approach it like a comedy rather than a serious suspense scifi dystopia it seems to have been trying to do.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Could have been great
I really enjoyed this movie, despite its many flaws. Anything under 5 stars is just neckbeard edgelords trying to be cool.
Aside from the prank phone call near the beginning of the movie, most of the humour was great, and got genuine laughs from the theater. The action was fantastic, though, most of the universe's physical laws change from scene to scene, which does get distracting. The galaxy has definitely shrunk since episode 4-6, they cross the galaxy in a matter of seconds rather than days.
The plot was far from airtight. Okay, it was a sieve with a few holes you could fly the falcon through, but overlooking that, the emotion and character arcs were what really hit home for me. I think they took too much from Rogue One, however, it felt like they had characters needlessly sacrificing themselves just to get more of a gut punch, but it didn't need to do that, and it started to feel cheap as the hours went on.
It's also long. 150 minutes long. I think with the help of a better editor, they could have trimmed a lot of fat, and tightened things up. As it was, my row was a constant stream of people going back and forth for bathroom breaks in the second half and my back was killing my by the end. It also had more endings than Return of the King. This is probably a result of having too many characters, and splitting the party.
All in all, it won't stand up to much scrutiny or nitpicking, but if you go into it looking for a fun star wars movie, you'll have a good time. Bring some tissues, too.
Arena (2011)
Retardedly awful
The movie was merely okay for the first 20 minutes or so. Totally predictable and cliché, but watchable. At the point the the main character, who's only claim to fame is being a marine widower kills the kendo master in a katana duel, the movie just got moronic. From the evil villainess's change of heart that would rival the idiocy of the Baroness falling for Duke, to the terrible montage glossing over the more interesting looking fight scenes, the movie robs the viewer of any entertainment, despite the pornographic violence and the T&A.
Sam Jackson knocks it out the park with his contemptuous performance. It's clearly a mailed in effort, which is all this movie deserves.
