Expend4bles (2023)
Lost interest and switched it off
I was a fan of The expendables and was eager to watch this. I love action films and for an hour and a half or two hours, don't mind a little mindless escapism but this - wow - what a pile of steaming rubbish. The jokes somehow in this one are the worst they've had, none of them made me even smile.
You've also got the jokes that are backed up with something going on at the time - pausing a fight scene to crack a joke and then continue fighting? No. Doesn't work. Maybe for anyone without a brain cell perhaps...
I feel very disappointed with this film as the past films have been enjoyable. Never before have I rated a film so low.
Invasion (2005)
What WAS the fuss about???
I've read loads of reviews on here all rating it and seeing it currently has over 7 stars on here as well, I thought I'd give it a go. I've got to the end of the second episode and I won't be watching any more of it.
I found the acting to be very hollow and recognised one of the actors who I've only really seen in low budget and poorly made productions in the past. The hollow acting reminded me of 1980s programmes and I just couldn't get into this at all which is a shame as I love a TV series or film that concentrates more on a storyline involving character development more than loads of action.
As for the story itself, it's the only reason I've rated it 2 stars.
Fauda (2015)
Very bad wobbly shaky camera syndrome
I was really looking forward to watching this. I've read the reviews and really couldn't wait to sit down one evening and watch. I'm a Brit and I love watching foreign material and this appeared to be right up my alley. I particularly like action movies and having not watched anything on the Palestine/Israel conflict made this even more desirable.
I've just had to switch this off. The camera movement is sooo erratic at the start it started to make me feel sick so I've had to rate it as only one star as I'm unable to watch it.
Why do film makers feel the need to make us feel like we're in a car crash?
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Not much of a biography...
...if it's hardly anything like his life story! I got half way through this and because I found it very difficult to believe, read some of Al's interviews, and in that he's absolutely nothing like he's being portrayed and he, himself, references parts of the film that he says just aren't him at all in the slightest. I ended up switching it off after that. Growing up I loved his music. It really was a breath of fresh air and some of them are extremely funny but this movie just doesn't work for me. If I watch a biography I want to experience the person's life story, not something that's been completely fabricated.
8-Bit Christmas (2021)
An era I grew up in
What an amazing film, brought back so many memories watching this. I was born in 1973 so the 80s was a massive part of my childhood. I fell into computers going through the BBC Micro, Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64 computers and experiencing several more. There's a fashion reference which instantly made me think of the bright fluorescent socks and you'd never wear matching pairs.
There's going to be several parts throughout the film that's going to trigger some great memories for most that watch it who experienced those wonderful years. The music sets the scene in many places and the use of Obsession by Animotion is extra magical for me.
I went in not knowing what to expect with a cast I've never heard of, wondering if I'd be switching it off half way through but was hooked until the end.
This is one of those films that's going to be a classic with the whole family.
Asteroid (2021)
Wish I never bothered
I decided to give this a go because of a review stating that it lost its way a bit. It never had a direction in the first place.
All of the acting is cardboard-like that I remember from educational school videos I used to watch as a kid in the late 70s or those really boring and poorly shot training videos you'd get to watch when starting a new job. The camera is static and seems to be shot from the same angles for each shot and the characters are framed far too centrally to give it any sort of natural feel.
When I first checked this out on IMDb yesterday it was rated 6.4 so I thought why not. Now, this morning, it's rated 5.4. Such a massive drop I can only assume friends of the production team rated it first.
I did give it a good go, but I just had to skip through it and see if there were any scenes or effects to help redeem it and absolutely nothing found.
I have a feeling that the ratings on this are going to plummet further.
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
This brings it home harder than before
I went to the cinema with my brother to watch this. We've both got quite an interest in the war as our grandfather was a gunner and we know he fought in Flanders, Belgium. This just runs with commentary from soldiers who were there from start to finish, giving you a thorough insight to what it was really like from before war was declared to the end. They really do paint a picture. The cleaned (ie. grain removed) colorised footage helps bring the footage home, seeing it like it's never been seen before.
I can't wait for this to appear on DVD as I'll definitely be buying it and I rarely buy DVDs.
Threads (1984)
Still hits home since 1986
First shown in 1985, re-shown in 1986. My elder brother said this was an amazing film and I sat down and watched it while it was on TV.
This is a low-budget BBC film. I spent 7 years tracking this down and a friend eventually found a copy available on an on-line auction. The only problem was it's from Miami, USA so my copy is NTSC (ex-rental) which means a new VCR so I can watch it but because of the incredible accuracy this film depicts of what a nuclear war would be like, it's worth it.
The story unfolds in Sheffield and shows how a nuclear bomb would affect normal everyday life covering three generations. There's small comments here and there on actual facts just to let you know what some procedures are. It's not just a nuclear blast but follows the effects of the fall-out as well.
If you like watching documentaries then I can't recommend this film enough because there's no gun-toting muscle hero to save the day - just the plain facts of what a nuclear blast back then would be like. We've progressed the strength of the weapons since 1985 so I can imagine living through a blast now would be much worse.
