Seed (2006)
Just because it is Uwe Boll doesn't mean everyone has to vote it down...
Aside from the movie having some longer cuts/scenes, overall it was a pretty solid horror flick.
Acting was not spectacular and neither was the script (kind of reminded me of Shocker), but it was a decent movie. The lead police offer in the film did a fairly good job of showing range of emotion depending on the scene/situation. Personally I am a fan of the silent, demented killer. Not a single line spoken that the viewer can hear by Seed himself. Probably not a bad idea because I'm going to go out on a limb and say the guy in the mask is probably a brutal actor...
Additionally, there is enough splatter to appease any horror fan and a nice little ending that doesn't leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
I know Uwe Boll is known for making ridiculous films, but he came through with one here. A pleasant surprise.
Venom (2005)
you are wrong
The movie did not come straight to video. Any real horror fan would have remembered this - it actually came out theatrically around the time of Cry Wolf and did little business due to the setting of New Orleans (at the time of Katrina) and being released in less than 1000 theaters nationwide. Aside from these obvious problems, the fact that the creature previewed on the trailer looked like the Creeper from Jeepers Creepers did not help. Nor did the fact the Method Man is trying to play an officer of the law. Come on now, 9 out of 10? Are you crazy? Bad Creeper + Method Man + Bijou Phillips = Disaster. It's actually quite a simple formula. Anyhow, the real reason I posted on this lame movie was to tell you simply to correct your movie errors before you post them. Thanks from all of us who actually watch horror films.
Open Water (2003)
My bathtub is scarier than this worthless film...
I just want to start by saying how excited I was about seeing this film. Not only had it gotten great reviews from mainstream critics, but it was marked as one of the scariest movies you will ever see. When the film finished, I walked out in complete silence. The movie sparks no emotion in you. It is not scary. It is not jumpy. It is supposed to be shot low budget as to give it a "realistic" feel. All it does is make it seem cheap. There is no budget. The actors are amateurs. The direction is shotty and choppy; never once do we get a clear shot of a shark or a shark attacking the couple. This is supposed to be scary? In regards to comparing it to The Blair Witch Project: that is a complete insult. The Blair Witch Project is a superior film by far; it was made knowing how to use atmosphere and the fear of the unknown work for scares. This mess of a film is hardly even a movie much less scary. The big puppet of a shark in Jaws is twice as scary what you'll see here. The best part of the movie was the trailers before hand; at least we got a taste of a few real horror films that are supposed to be heading this way.
Quills (2000)
Oscar snubbed
Watch this masterpiece and you will see exactly how much Rush was snubbed by Russell Crowe for the Oscar. This film is one of the most complete, compelling, and overall intriguing films in my recent memory. Worth watching more than once. A definite four star film.
They (2002)
Creepy little horror gem
For those of you who saw the disaster "Darkness Falls," do yourselves a favor and check out a superior film in "They." This film is a well crafted horror treat by Harmon, who last made a film with "The Hitcher." Harmon knows how to bring up a scene and make the viewer be taken away by it. With this film it was no exception. "They" is the simple story of nightscares that are an actual reality. The protagonist in the film and a circle of others are all haunted by these creatures that come for them in the dark. I think what I found so fun about the film was that we never get a really good look at the creatures. We see their outlines but never too much of them. The fear of the unknown really plays on the senses. The ending of the film was fitting and bleak. It was good because it is not satisfying like most cookie cutter endings; everything is not going to be OK in the end of the film and that is what we need to see more of with horror. We do not need some lolly pop ending like we saw in Darkness Falls (blah). Overall Harmon put together a nice little film with "They" and I recommend checking it out when you get the chance.
