Memoria (2021)
first film of Weerasethakul that i didn't like
I think is was a mistake to choose Swinton as an actress for this (or any) movie. Overacting, overdramatizing, everything that this person hears, sees, does, just moves her way too much to be bearable to watch. The idea of being connected to someone else's memory felt forced upon this character, not believable, not moving, not inspiring, not exciting, not interesting. I could't care less and i love Weerasethakul's movies (gave uncle Boonmee a 10). Don't understand this choice of cast. The landscape where it's filmed is beautiful but the acting is so over the top i scolded Swinton a few times. The dialogues were are weak and not engaging.
This Is Not Who I Am (2021)
can you ever confront someone in denial?
A filmmaker makes a movie about his mother in which he also reveals her abuse during his and his siblings childhood. Halfway through he shows his mother what the movie is becoming which makes her upset going from denial (or lying?) to helplessness to manipulation and in a way even aggression. Even though the concept and theme are simple, it is done in such a way that I as a watcher felt a lot of space to think and reflect on all the different positions and motives of the filmmaker and his mother. Also the changed role that children first have, being helpless and subjected to whatever their parents do, to being a grown up and in control of the narrative. What i also liked is that the heavy subject matter is balanced by humor and intimate relationship between son and mother despite everything.
Portrait of a failed writer (2020)
strange and interesting
I don't quite know how to describe or type this movie. I thought it would be about the publishing industry and struggles of an artist but it's more about the craft of fiction and next to that raises existential questions. Many unexpected choices made it fascinating to watch. Definitely not mainstream, i would recommend it for artists/writers/makers (or artists at heart).
Vivarium (2019)
worth to watch, could 've been shorter
I soon noticed the pace of the film was unnecessary slow so i watched it at 1.2x speed. i liked the dystopian setting, the existential questions it posed, what i missed was humor. for example Beckett's plays are in dystopian circling settings (happy days best example) bit is also funny, making it grim and enjoyable in a peculiar way.
Dovlatov (2018)
misogynistic
The female roles in this film were stereotypical, was there not even one talented female writer in their group in that time? The women are either in love, in awe or supportive, none of them has an authentic plan of their own, the only female remotely doing something artistic, the actrice, is a sell out. But the men on the other hand are all hero's standing their ground.. how pathetic to enforce these harmful and dishonest stereotypes..
