Panic Room (2002)
Why do people always writhe around on the floor looking for guns
Panic Room is an adequate thriller with a good dose of suspense but like most films constructed within the confines of a big studio it lets itself down at the end. Why are people always writhing around on the floor, half-injured reaching for guns which are seemingly out of their reach only to be grabbed at the last moment. The ending is predictable in the extreme, which was disappointing considering the suspense and intrigue which was built up during the film. This film would have been better off in the hands of an independent film-maker.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Hollywood tripe
Vanilla Sky is a boring waste of money which attempts to comment on alternate realities but in effect loses the viewer halfway through due to the sheer dullness of the characters. Although it does improve towards the end, when the explanations arrive, most of the narration is too restricted and the acting performances are wooden, one-dimensional and basically downright boring(except Jason Lee). Give me the money next time.
Mad Max 2 (1981)
Better than the first
Quite possibly the greatest film ever made, Mad Max 2 is a seminal piece of work from the aussie genius, George Miller. It is unique in that it is a sequel which transcends its predecessor. It is also the first film of its kind and therefore a base for all post-apocalyptic film-makers. It is outstanding film-making, a joy to watch.
Down Rusty Down (1997)
Original, brilliant and shocking - a masterpiece
This is a fantastic short film which engages the viewer from start to finish. It is one of the most original short films i have ever seen. it has shock value, brilliant mise-en-scene and is a showcase for the abundant talents of Noah Taylor. No wonder it showed at Sundance.
