Columbo: Butterfly in Shades of Grey (1994)
It smells like a lychie, but feels like a tomato...
Columbus is back again as that mild mannered sleuth in truth, columbo. This time he's up against a ruthless Radio broadcaster who likes to "god bless you darling" old ladies. Columbo's ne'er well to-do cousin is a big fan of his, which I believe is very relevant to the plot at hand. The radio guy, Kirkumbo, has one of those crazy psychological disorders and in an effort to protect his daughter from the intentions of a gentleman caller, does away with said gentleman. Not realising he was a gay man, the victim not the murderer...although with that 'stash you'd be forgive for suspecting...if it was a real 'stash I think he just liked to drink hot chocolate and kept forgetting to wipe his upper lip...but anyway I digress. Overall i'd recommend this film both Falk and Kirk acted superbly and the special effects were great. However I didn't understand the significance of Columbo placing that large pickle in his coat pocket, I guess I must of missed why, as I was too busy laughing at what he said about his wife, his shoes and the cherry tomato! In conclusion this is one of the greatest episodes of this series with a villain who is as sinister and scheming as the come!
Guns, God and Government World Tour (2002)
Promises much but fails to deliver.
This could have been a lot better than it was. The most disappointing thing about this DVD was that it contained only 2 features. which were an impressive 17 live songs taken from the last world tour, and a 30 minute behind the scenes documantary. Firstly lets look at the live performances. Personly I found it disappointing that the video footage was spliced together from multiple live shows, while using one audio track. Rather than showing complte perfomanes from different shows. Also between songs they seemed to be showing the same generic crowd footage from Reading 2001. The documentary, titled the "death parade". This featured some moments that are not really for the faint hearted, a scene involving a transexual peeing in a bucket comes to mind. This could also have shown a lot more, rather than basically playing tracks from the Holywood album that weren't good enough to play live.I may sound like i'm puting this movie down, and I suppose I am, but I was just annoyed that this movie doesn't live up to its full potential. What there is, is good but could have been done better, and more content would have pleased the hungry fans more.
Independence Day (1996)
Shoddy special effects, but class acting!
ID4 Independence day, is the fourth installment in this series. It takes place in the year 2029 when Aliens decide to invade Earth. Their ultimate goal is to steal the worlds water supply and take it back to their own home planet. This film has an intriquing and absorbing storyline that was extremely well writen. The only let down of the movie was the terribly poor and substandard special effects. I mean you could actually see the wires holding the aliens spacecraft. In fact this movie even makes the original series of Star Trek look good. But hey we all know that effects don't make a movie, its the acting and the actors. The Rock - Dwane Johnson (WWF wrestling champ) stars as plucky young airforce captain, Steven Hitler. While Burt Reynolds reprises his role as hunky computer geek, "good morning" David Levinson. Reynolds steals the show once again, proving that he truly deserved the Oscar won for his role in Cannonball run II. While the Rocks portrayal of Hiller provides the comedy relief, who can forget the fight scene on the alien mothership when he gives a "rock-bottom" to Seven of Nine? Classic. I highly recomend this piece of b-movie turned a-movie to buy, NOT rent.
