Trainwreck (2015)
Got Hype?
Trainwreck is just one of those movies that did not match the hype surrounding it.
It is simply not that funny, and completely predictable. This movie is not deserving of any sort of award nominations.
Amy Shumer plays a writer for a magazine and is given an assignment to do a story regarding sports/athletes, and due to her lack of knowledge and protest regarding sports, her boss gives her the assignment.
I don't know what to make of Amy's character "Amy" (yep! that's her character's name!) She's supposedly a professional, but her actions state otherwise. She is also portrayed as a man-eater. I have issues with that for many reasons.
Anyway, during her research for the article, she meets a sports doctor/surgeon played by Bill Hader. Hader was wonderfully portrayed as a love interest on "The Mindy Project", but in this movie he's as entertaining as piece of cardboard. Actually, less so because cardboard can be entertaining at times. His character never jumped out at me and made me swoon, laugh, or feel anything really.
This role never gave Hader any justice, he deserves so much more!!! Someone owes him big time!
So a relationship builds and of course since we are in the age of feminism, the female lead must take on the stereotypes of a man. She doesn't like commitment, or snuggling, or sleep overs. That has always been an issue for me in regards to feminism. Shouldn't our goal be to get away from stereotypes for both men and women?? Why does a single working girl have to always be opposed to marriage and children. Why aren't we getting a single working girl that loves being around children, but quite frankly doesn't want to a mom herself. Why aren't we getting a single working girl interested in children, but not marriage. There is nothing wrong with these scenarios.
Women are usually portrayed as one or the other. According to movies women must either want a career or a relationship. Women are only strong and independent when they chew men up and spit them out. Single strong women don't want children, that's only for uppity suburbanites who gave up on life.
Anyway, there really is not much to say after this because it is extremely formulaic as far as romantic comedies go.
The only parts I laughed at contained John Cena. That was in the beginning of the movie. Nothing Amy did really stood out to me.
I also felt the scene with the intern was ridiculous and what if the roles were reversed? What if a male lead was in bed with an intern, that turned out to be 16? How would the audience react to that? Would we be forgiving and continue to watch? This movie is just full of double standards and that is not paving the way for female roles or females in our society. All they are saying is "hey look, women can be pigs just like men can be." I guess that's not really the equality I am looking for as far as genders go.
I am being nice with 2 stars. I base this off of how much I laughed, and how much I cared about the two main characters being together. This movie was clearly over-hyped, and Amy Shumer did nothing special do deserve a nomination, it's just for popularity. I am convinced the nomination was given because of the hoopla surrounding the movie and Shumer this year. The awards show must feel that may reflect higher ratings for them.
Magic Mike XXL (2015)
Loads of Fun!!!
I give this movie a solid 8. While parts did tend to be slow and drawn out and were not necessary the end totally makes up for it! The first Magic Mike was an excellent movie, however it was a little dark and showed probably a more realistic side to the stripping world.
The second Magic Mike is way more fun, comical, and entertaining. I don't go and see movies that are only going to be nominated for Oscars. I knew this wasn't going to be award worthy, but it sure was super fun! I love the bond between the guys in this one and the road trip aspect. Amber Heard kind of ruined it for me a little no offense. She's beautiful but her character did absolutely nothing for the film. There were a few scenes where I got some great laughs. One being the super market scene, and the other being the Twilight stripper scene. OMG! I almost died. And when they did Molly, even though I don't promote drug use, still a funny scene.
So get your girls together for a fun night out. This movie is super fun and the last 20 minutes is going to be a blast!
Cool Dog (2010)
The worst movie I have ever seen.
Cool Dog is the worst movie I have ever seen. EVER. My daughter chose the movie which of course came from the wonderful collection provided by netflix. I knew within the first 5 seconds this movie was a low budget piece of junk. How do movies like this even get made??? My sympathy goes out to the dog more than anyone else; because unlike the humans the dog actually didn't have a choice in starring in this horrible, senseless, pointless, painful-to-watch movie. I have forbidden my daughter from watching this movie ever again as I feel that movies like these act as drugs and decrease normal brain development.
If it was possible my vote would be 0 out of 10.
My So-Called Life (1994)
Years later this is still one of my favorite TV shows EVER!
A special thanks to Netflix for finally putting something worthwhile on instant play. I haven't watched this show since it first aired 17 years ago! Oh! the memories this show brings back to me. Such a brilliant show, gone too soon! It really is a shame the show didn't stay on longer; especially when you consider what shows do get to stay on television.
I was 15 in 1994, the same year 'My So-Called Life' first aired. 1994 could be considered to some as the height of the grunge era; it's the same year Kurt Cobain killed himself, the same year the second Woodstock took place (which should have been the last in my humble opinion:)). Generation Xers were certainly the basis of this show, and it shows in the clothing and music as well as issues such as, sexual orientation and school shootings dealt with on the show.
The main character, Angela Chase (played by the fantastic Claire Danes) was also 15, and as far as I was concerned someone had taken my life and put it on television.
Between Angela's confusion about what crowd she wanted to surround herself with, to those obscure and sometimes awkward voice-over thoughts Angela had about life, friends, family, and Jordan Catalano (sigh), all made for a very realistic teen drama. Even Angela's wardrobe set her apart from all the other shows depicting teens. She was the only teenage character on television that I ever saw wear the same outfits week after week. My dad watched this show with me and I think he really did enjoy it as much as I did.
I was so heart broken when the show ended. But just like the good die young, this show had to be put to rest early. I like to think it was all for the best, and if it had stayed on it would have eventually jumped the shark and become a horrible show.
Although, I must admit there are those times when I wonder: what would have ever come of Brian and Angela?? I will never forget that long, emotional stare they had with each other in front of her house at the end of the last episode. UGH! The agony of not knowing will always haunt me.
Community (2009)
Great Cast...lots of laughs!
Now that the season has ended, I wanted to add a few of my own thoughts on what I believe is one of the best new comedy shows on television! At first, I really didn't know what to expect with "Community". Yes I'll admit it, I tuned in because of Joel McHale. His relentless plugging on "The Soup" certainly helped, but I really do like McHale and was eager to see him do something different. And while at first it was strange to watch him go from host to actor; McHale has really held his own on this show. He certainly has great comedic talent and he is easy on the eyes!
The characters are by far my favorite part about this show! Each one has a great unique quality, yet at the same time they are very relatable. Abed and Troy are a great duo, and Annie's innocent and narcotic nature is classic. The writers have certainly hit the nail with Britta's character! Anyone who went to a community college knows there are many "Brittas" out there! I love seeing Chevy Chase again. And sweet Shirley; a mother going back to school, what a fabulous and honest touch! Also, I must mention how great it is to see all this wonderful NEW talent. I hope to see more of these actors in the future. In addition to the regular cast, I must give credit to the great supporting cast members that are included in episodes each week. "Scrubs" and "The Simponsons" are both great examples of how non-main characters can really give shows that extra oomph.
After watching an episode the other night, my husband told me this is his favorite new show. "Community" is the first show in a long time that has really made me laugh out loud! I will never forget the episode with Chase playing Pictionary. The word "Windmill" should be banned from the game...that was priceless! Or the episode with the paintball fight. I love how the writers throw in these witty movie and television references. They do it in a way that seems so effortless, and if you are not listening closely you miss out! The "jump the shark" line in the season finale...clever!
So, I look forward to watching more of "Community" and I would certainly recommend this show to anyone looking for a good laugh!
This Is It (2009)
If you have ever felt like standing up and cheering during a movie: THIS IS IT!
What a great final performance by the one and only Michael Jackson! I had many different reactions to this movie/documentary. I felt happy, sad, excited, even shocked by some parts.
If you have not seen the movie, you will be blown away at what they had planned for the concert...that's the only teaser I have for you..just go see the movie!
I went to the midnight showing at a local theater, and took my daughter. Dancers dressed like zombies performed Thriller for everyone, there was a costume contest. When the movie started there was lots of cheering, and clapping! I am normally the kind of person that gets angry if I hear someone sneeze in a theater, but this movie...I don't know..it just felt right! There was such an awesome vibe in the theater! We really lost a great one. R.I.P MJ.
