Chernobyl (2019)
An eerie true story with heroism beyond belief
The well-known Chernobyl disaster was depicted incredibly well with much detail. What struck me the most was how every state cares most about protecting its throne over its people. The second thing was the bravery of men and women. It is my belief that they saved the world. I tried to put myself in their shoes and upon self-reflecting I'm not sure if I could have done it. Maybe when faced with a catastophe of that scale - if you don't do it everyone dies. It's terrifing even to think about it.
The script, directing and acting is superb.
Game of Thrones (2011)
One of the best scripts for tv ever - complex, many characters, intertwined, intriguing...
Very well written script, interesting and very complex with many characters, also with good acting and visual effects. Even people who are not fans of epic fantasy can watch this and find it interesting as series consists of many political power struggle, drama, romance, war etc. themes. For me personally the script is the core of any film or tv series and this one is brilliant with the first seasons being better than say the last season. Maybe it's because they followed books more closely whereas the 8th book is not yet published.
Anyway, I highly recommend the series. It will draw you into the story and you'll live in a new world for the duration of the series.
Eorin shinbu (2004)
Cute little boring stuff
It's about high school girl who gets married to an older guy (college graduate or something), a close family friend. Underage girl, marriage, older guy - controversial ah? One may think there will be some questions raised.. But..
Generally speaking, Korean cinematography works for me. I had to say this since a lot of my friends have prejudices and dislike everything (films I mean) that's Asian but not martial art-ish.
That being said, this movie lacks a good story and character development. It's unconvincing. Bad plot. This is supposed to be a romance comedy but it's not much funny nor much romantic. It feels like an instant lets-make-movie-and-get-some-money-without-much-effort movie.
Acting is excellent.
Authors note: I really like facial expressions which I also noticed in some other movies like My Sassy Girl etc. They get me every time along with the crying scenes. I'm pathetic I know. :)
Anyways, there are much better films in my opinion but watch it if you will. For good acting I'll give it 3 out of 10.
Prozac Nation (2001)
Very good description of depression
I haven't read the book, but I certainly will since in my experience book is always much better than the following film.
The only criticism I have for this film is that the ending is somehow sudden. I was so into the film and when it'd finished I felt like someone had cut the film's last 10 minutes.
I'm the 4th year student of psychology and psychotherapy and in my opinion the story showed depression like it really is with some people suffering from it. That's why I want to read the book too.
The film concentrates at the present crisis of the main character Elizabeth with a few glimpses into her childhood. She just started university.
Going to college alone is considered stressful event and one of the normal crisis in life (as is for example pregnancy, retirement etc.) and can be a trigger for depressive episodes (combined with other factors).
I was really impressed with how the film presented mother-daughter and daughter-boyfriend relationship and the state of mind of a depressed person. The relationship with her father, her emotions for him and vice versa are less developed. But all important psychological elements were covered. The usual behavior of parents who have children with similar illnesses is there. The powerful desire depressed people have for someone to save them is also showed in the film. Also the hardness of being friends or in some other way close to depressed person.
And acting - I'll just say bravo!
I also like the following point in the film - if you're suffering from depression, seek help, from family, friends, but especially professional help! And if you really feel that professional help is not good enough for you seek further. It's treatable! (Btw, don't use just drugs) It's not that depressed people don't have power to deal with it alone when they seek help - no one else can win that fight for them. It's about support and guidance through the black clouds of their mind and Pan's labyrinth but the real steps and decisions are made by them.
Palabras encadenadas (2003)
Excellent mind game thriller
I've just finished watching "Palabras encadenadas" and WOW...
Script, direction, acting - everything is perfect. I usually notice a lot of faults and holes in the (especially) story and acting but not in this film.
The story is very coherent, well written, exciting, thrilling and non-predicable. As you watch the film you learn about the characters, bit by bit. At the end we have nicely circled and developed characters and the story itself.
Performance of Dario Grandinetti playing Ramon gave me chills and not just chills... I felt like a puppet - like the film is pulling my emotions and mind all over the place. The story just sucks you in.
Btw, this is not fast film, nor action film, nor bloody film so if you prefer fast car scenes or Tarantino-ish quasi scary scenes etc. this is not it.
This is psychological thriller and I recommend that you watch it.
Duplicity (2009)
nor fun nor artistic - makes brainwaves go flat
While watching Duplicity I had a feeling that one should consider script and the whole movie smart and witty but in reality it's typical hollywoodish attack on one's intelligence. Like it was written for 5 years old audience.
In an effort to keep the attention of the audience a not very good and dull story of corporate espionage and love affair of two spies Ray and Claire is withholding the information (surprise surprise effect) throughout the movie. But even these attempts to mislead one from the obvious couldn't help for the movie to become better and less predictable.
The secret spies are after, a scene where we find out what actually is the secret can give one a final clue about the ending which the filmmakers were so desperately trying to hide. Well, maybe next time.
Except for the beauty of Julia Roberts I couldn't find anything good about this movie. It seems like that even the famous actors hadn't tried to do their best with this one. I find that nowadays for a movie to be on top at the box offices it's needed just to have some stars in it and nothing else.
I can't recommend watching this film even for relaxation as it may make you angry.
