Iron Fist (2017)
Ehh... this is awkward to watch.
Okay.... First off, I understand that Danny is white in the comics as I write this review. A character that that started off in the 70s. A time where most media felt as if white leads sold better than minority leads. This led to main characters such as Shanna She-devil, Iron Fist, Dr.Strange etc.. to lead in African or Asian settings.
So enough of the history lesson. Flash forward to the Iron Fist show!
3 Negatives-
1) This isn't the 70s. Having a white lead in a HEAVILY Asian inspired show, when we are beyond over saturated with straight white male heroes, is becoming an blatant overplayed privilege in Disney, Marvel, and in movies/shows in general. So. Strike 1
2) The times where Marvel/Disney feels it necessary to change a characters races can usually be a positive change of pace. This should have been one of those times. I feel like making Danny half Asian would have been the answer to escaping the 70s vibe that only white people can explore different cultures. ESPECIALLY since we are in year 2017 where it's racially uncomfortable to watch something like this when there are VERY, VERY, VERY, few Asian roles and even less Asian heroes AND EVEN LESS that show their culture.
3) The plot moves very slow. We spend episodes trying to get people to talk when they could have been summed up in a couple of sentences....
3 Positives-
1) Collen Wing is EVERYTHING! This woman is the best part of the show! This should have been her show! I can't wait to see her team up with Misty Knight!
2) The fight scenes are fun to watch and stand out nicely.
3) Danny has a nice butt.
4) The show has hope. I think if people start listening to the social injustices and embracing the changes people want. I don't want to see it go... but it makes me uncomfortable to see it the way it is. If not- - give us a Collen Wing show-- OR BETTER YET! Daughters of the Dragon! <3
Just my 2 cents anyways.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)
As a fan of this film series-- this was a let down...
WOW... Where do I begin?
So as someone who loved the first 2 films and Retribution... this was kind of rough to watch.
Avoiding spoilers, I'll say this...
1) Don't expect many previously established characters to return in the for the last film. MAJOR LET DOWN. Matter of fact-- they don't even explain or acknowledge them. We're led to probably assume they dead.
2) Continuity from the 2nd film was completely ignored (Angie and her father) to focus on Alice/Milla and to give her daughter a significant role in the film.
3) Characters that are from the video games that do make it into the film have their roles & abilities shifted to the made-up characters, despite the fact that they are right standing right there in the scene doing not much...the entire film.
The film had faithful outfits from the games and an ending that worked for Alice's character-- but overall, this was VERY weak for 6 movie franchise. This should have been the ending for the last film.
Another dumb issue I had a problem with was... WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THE FINAL CHAPTER WITH A MILD CLIFFHANGER!???? That bothered me.
I think this film is a prime example on why fans of the games hate these movies. I think they have sold out-- not by the gamer's standards, but by their own previously established work on other films. What a disappointing end to a pretty good franchise.
NEXT TIME RESIDENT EVIL COMES TO FILM-- FOCUS ON THE GAMES AND IT'S CHARACTERS! Not everything needs to be 100% action. Just look at the success of the walking dead.
Nina (2016)
Okay it wasn't bad...
Look this film was actually moving and hit some actually good notes. Being a fan of Nina and Zoe Saldana, this movie caught my interest. And despite the controversy, I thought I would end up disliking this movie like the Aaliyah or Whitney biopic. But this had substance, music, and felt organic. The only downfalls are 1) Zoe Saldana looks NOTHING like Nina Simone. There are rare instances in some scenes where I can see it-- But no matter how amazing of an actress Zoe Saldana is she is too thin, her skin color is shades different from how Nina's looked, and her face just a bit like a costume instead of a believable human being. It took away a significant amount of believability. This hurts me to say this, because again I love Zoe and Nina. 2) No matter how much substance this movie has, a lot of it becomes void, based on the fact that Nina's life centered around a dark black skinned woman and her struggles. Being dark skinned is a central part of Nina's being and story. It minimizes her journey to cast a light skinned actress who barely resembles her. I personally feel Whoopi Goldberg or Viola Davis would've been much more suited for this role. That would have created a much more believable on-screen illusion for me to get lost in as a viewer.
Overall. Flaws aside, this film does have a little bit of substance. It's not as bad as Lifetime's terrible attempt at the Aaliyah or Whitney movie-- but it isn't as good at 'What's Love Got to Do With It?' or 'Crazy Sexy Cool- the TLC Story'
I hope this review helps
