Supergirl (2015)
Yes, this show, like most shows has faults, but in general it is a good show
It's a show that offers a few surprises here and there, but the most shocking aspects of this show deal with all the negative feed back.
People are entitled to their opinion, but when someone says an event that has been hinted at since the very first episode of the series and basically spelled out for you by the 4th episode came out of nowhere, you have no choice, but to question the validity of their opinion. In this show most of the major plot points are developed to the point where you watch the show just to see when they play it out for you. As I referenced above with Alex being gay. Cat, Lena, and Snapper knowing Kara is Supergirl is another major one. The footage of a young Kara saving someone in a car plays a part near the end of season 2. Mon-El Jeremiah and Martian Man Hunter all get the same treatment as well. For the most part the payoff is usually worth sitting through the build up.
Political views play a role on this show as well, more so in the second season then the first. You'll notice on this site and others that reviewers prefer one season over another the first half of season 2 over the second half depending on their political views.
A few people complained about how Jimmy was changed to a black guy, a change that literally had no effect but to make a 10 minute Interracial relationship and gave the character to be a mentor type character to a child. Either way the character was relatable even to a Spanish guy.
The only truly feminist character on this show is Cat Grant. She is the one that beyond being a strong female tries to help women improve themselves. She took Kara, Livewire, and Silver Banshee under her wing, only one was able to see that she wasn't a bitch, she just played one for her own reasons. She is a great role model for young women, but horrible for children. Wanting gender equality (or getting as close as possible) doesn't make you a feminist anymore than being a manhater with hairy armpits that burns bras does. The former is a decent human being, the latter is a selfish idiot who would be a misogynistic man if she were born male. Being altruistic (Kara) doesn't make you feminist, it makes you a good person. A show about a girl being girly is nothing new, romance and asinine dialogue between women is expected. Though I do hold a big grudge for the OTP comment. Damn millennials and their random BS. How do you have a one true pairing, when you aren't even in the pairing! It makes her dumb for being sad about Mon-El. I maintain that the comment should have been about a health condition. Then when Lena reveals she knew Kara was Supergirl she could bring it up. As an added bonus, 10 seconds of my life wouldn't have been wasted looking that up.
All signs Alex was gay
-Winn accuses Supergirl of being Gay
-Alex is hostile towards all men before big reveal
-fake date with a guy doesn't make her straight
-In the fourth episode Kara tells Alex to tell Eliza her secret and she acted like Kara knew something she shouldn't before Kara says she means the DEO.
-Cat says she has evidence someone in the city is gay.
Supergirl: Nevertheless, She Persisted (2017)
Cat is Darth Vader
Consider the similarities; he was a bad guy turned good while she is a decent person though she is perceived as a bitch. Kara is the lightsaber since as usual she is the one that gives her the confidence boost she needs to win her battles. It's just one way of seeing it, as a lot of what she says can be seen as subtle sarcasm or taken literally. She was great as usual and finally admitted she knows who Supergirl is. Though I'm no longer certain Kara knows she knows.
Apparently the fight in the beginning has gotten mixed reviews; I hover feel that the route they took was the best one. Not only did it remove the problem of having to add Zod to the storyline, but it was a way for them to show that she is indeed more powerful than her cousin. Another noteworthy part in the beginning is that Rhea said Superman rushed in recklessly, just as Kara did at first and when she became over confident with her abilities. Alex being captured and nearly killed obviously taught her to look before she leaps; something he apparently didn't learn yet. I do hope that Superman being taken over by the enemy isn't going to be the running theme of every season. I hope mind control in the season finally has run it's course. Maggie and Alex just standing there irritated the hell out of me. Alex has a battle suit, she could have used it on the daxamites and to Intervene on Kara's behalf. Superman clearly was only interested in attacking Kara.
Lena and Lillian were actually quite awesome in this episode. I always thought both characters had so much more to give and they showed it here, excellent performances. I assume Lena's hostility towards Supergirl means she knows her secret, though I hope she sees as Cat sees, why she keeps it from some people.
Is Doomsday coming in season 3? Overall solid episode.
Supergirl: Resist (2017)
Blacklist Supergirl style and the return of Kara!
I personally thought this was a pretty good episode for a season that started off rather slowly compared to the first one. I kind of understand why. The only spoilers here on out
The first season was about meek Kara Danvers/Zor-El becoming Supergirl and about building characters. The only plot points were Lord and the Kryptonians so they had a lot of room to bring in villains and make interesting episodes.
Season two brought in new characters, politics, furthered character story lines, and had Kara embrace being Supergirl. Kara spent most of the season being Supergirl, even when she was in her Kara persona. The only times she really let herself be Kara is when she was having emotional moments(girl talk; intimate with Mon-El, excitement over meeting the president etc; or when she was being a reporter. Otherwise she was 100% Supergirl; however, who can rally blame her? In the early episodes of season 1 she stated that true Kryptonian nature is to embrace team work and she did just that. But being the most powerful member of the team and with so many victories she started to need others less and less and became more like how she saw Superman, a loner and being biologically young she let it get to her head, which made her more arrogant, it took pep talks from Snapper and Maggie as well as Alex almost dying for her to see the error of her ways. That is a major reason why she contacted Lillian in this episode.
Human nature also played a much larger role in this season, but especially in this episode. It's why Lillian left Mon-El and Kara Stranded and why Kara went to talk to Rhea. Both women are destined to be who they are (Lilian is vile and Kara is overly optimistic). It is also human nature to seek guidance, in season 1, she had Kat to tell her when she was wrong or right. In season 2 she had to decide on her own and not having Kat's experience, she sucked at it that lead to her being arrogant.
The Kara in the season two episodes (arrogant to the point of being obnoxious) for the most part was nothing like Kara in the introduction sequence (a giant dork). In this episode, she is the same person only wiser and more mature. That is why she had a backup plan for getting Mon-El back home.
The similarities between this episode and the Series Blacklist are numerous: -Team of good guys teams up with a bad guy to get worse bad guy -Kat knows Kara is Supergirl and Supergirl knows it; everyone knew the relationship between Red and Masha -Bad guy does something to screw over good guys behind their back -Good guy seeks guidance from parent figure
Most of the other reviews mentioned some of the stuff I left out; I just wanted to mention a few things I thought were also important. I know they continue to play it off like Kat doesn't know, but Winn basically spelled it out for her. Speaking of Kat and Winn, when did she become so maternal towards him? She never called him by his actual name, let alone his actual name! That was basically my major critique of this episode and season. I think she only ever called him Winn one time in all of season 1. Though her sarcastic comments towards the president made me realize she was being sarcastic more often than I realized in season one, most noticeably when she acted surprised when she found out who Winn's father was.
