Keeping Company (2021)
Witty. Bloody. Fun.
I had the pleasure of seeing this film in festivals and it was definitely a stand out. The two leads were a blast to watch and the "creepy dude" was awesome. Many laughs, many scares, what a fun flick. Not to mention it makes you think more than your run-of-the-mill horror film out there. Didn't expect it to be as smart as it was. Great movie all around!
The Assistant (2019)
I get it...but come on. This is not a film.
Would have been a nice short film to golf clap to while the credits roll, but don't trick audiences into sitting through a feature film just to prove a point. And don't market a move with words like "riveting" when you know it isn't.
Not worth your time. Just watch the trailer because it's much more exciting than this pretentious "movie".
American Hustle (2013)
Over-hyped Pretentious Garbage
Why this film has such praise is beyond me! Yes, there is amazing cinematography and great performances from Amy Adams and Christian Bale..but that's literally it! The story is unbelievable slow and drags like you can't believe. I was patient and sat through the entire film, hoping that the sh*t would actually go down in the end and compensate for the lack of entertainment throughout... But nope...none at all. I love drama and am not an action guy at all, but I was at least hoping for some intense scenes or serious drama to happen by the end of the film. Everything is so light hearted and "fun" so you naturally just don't care what happens to anyone...there are zero stakes!
If you are familiar with the film "Get Him to The Greek" here's a reference for you... This movie is the "African Child" of films this year. It's like everyone is afraid to say that they didn't like the movie! Whenever someone admits they didn't like it...they feel like they have to whisper because someone will be offended. People get so defensive over this film and I don't understand it.
Bottom line is, don't waste your time on this film. It feels like it's a four hour film and I was literally looking around the theater and seeing everyone shifting in their seats, waiting for it to end.
Here are some films I DID enjoy this year to give you an idea of my taste... "Place Beyond the Pines" "Inside Llewyn Davis" "Her" "Captain Phillips"
This Is 40 (2012)
A very real, hilarious movie that hits close to home for anyone living in one...
If you're looking for a goofy comedy like Pineapple Express or The 40 Year Old Virgin, then you may be thrown off with this film.
This Is 40 is a much more mature, emotional, yet still continuously hilarious film. If you are a fan of Knocked Up and Funny People and enjoy very real life movies and situations that Apatow famously brought to the screen, then you will love This Is 40.
The cast and music is also top notch as usual with any Apatow film along with the cinematography which is as real as the writing an acting...no distracting over cinematic effects, just very real and raw.
Go see it now with the family and you won't be disappointed!
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
A Perfect Film.
Let me start by saying that I am not into political films at all. But Zero Dark Thirty is a masterpiece of cinema that manages to be historically educational and bring nail biting thrills throughout the entire 2 hours and 30 minutes. I'm not going to rant for too long but all of this B.S about the torture scenes really is false. The torture scenes didn't go too far but rather showed the audience barely a taste of the torture that happens EVERY DAY around the world, and involving the U.S. All I'm going to say is that there's no denying that worse forms exist in the U.S and the government should be lucky that Kathryn didn't show anything worse than water torture and a few punches thrown.
Go see Zero Dark Thirty and although there's no twist ending of Bin Laden's eye opening at the end, you still will be thrilled the entire time!
