The Paper Tigers (2020)
Solid movie
Pretty formulaic plot, but it's got great action and choreography, good comedy, and I appreciate the fact that it wasn't completely white washed.
Overall, a good movie.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Excellent.
I went into this movie expecting a garbage fire. But it was so good! It struck the perfect tone, the fighting was well done, and it was funny.
The original movies from the 90s took themselves so seriously and had such stiff fight scenes.
I thought this movie was just excellent. Not much in the way of meaningful character growth, complex story, or anything like that. But come on, you know what movie you're watching!
Yes, God, Yes (2019)
LOVED this movie! Any ex-catholic will
This movie is so spot-on about what it's like going to a Catholic School. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if I hadn't been raised Catholic and gone to a Catholic high School. The humor is subtle, but it's good. Go into this movie open-minded and I think you'll really enjoy it.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
Amaaaazing comedy horror!
This film knows exactly what it is, and hits all the right beats so fantastically well. I love the comedy. It really committed to the horror. The pacing is pretty good. Overall, a fun way to spend a Friday night.
Lorenzo (2004)
Simply stunning
My jaw literally dropped halfway through this short film. It was so beautifuly done. It is a bit dark, like some beautiful nightmare. And probably meant more for adults than kids. But wow.... What a film.
Shigatsu wa kimi no uso (2014)
characters / music / art: all WONDERFUL
This anime is not perfect. It wastes a little too much time on a love triangle. And the animation style is a little annoying at times, because the characters talk, but their mouths don't always move- so sometimes you can't tell what's inner dialogue, and what's actual dialogue.
But the characters are realistic, with their own sense of growth, and compassion, and drive. The music is fantastic. The animation is beautiful. And the emotions that the anime pushes you to feel are powerful. This anime is able to make a junior high music competition feel more intense and nerve-wracking than most animes do about a fight over the fate of the world.
This is one of my favorite animes, and I can't recommend it enough!
Inside Out (2015)
a deeply intelligent, fun movie
Absolutely LOVED this movie. I really can't say enough good things about it. It discusses the nature of happiness and sadness and how we deal with difficult times in our lives. It does so, not by hand feeding you a simple story. But by treating you to a rich and complicated tale with so much thought put into it.
It seems many people don't like it because the film asks you to use use your brain a bit. I wish more movies pushed me to think and ask questions like this one did.
I hope it encourages young viewers to talk with their parents about what they think of the movie. It truly is a gem.
Complex. Deep. Thought provoking. Funny and touching.
