The Famous Five (1978)
Michelle Gallager
The 1978 Famous Five series has always been a favourite with me. I was only 12 at the time it began, but watched repeats of it during my teens. I always loved Michelle as George, but I've heard that she died some time ago. This is very sad if true! It is lovely to think we have this series to remember her by. I'm glad that the rest of the 'Five' in this show are still living and doing well. I have most of this series on DVD now and even though I'm well out of my youth, still play the show once in a while. I liked Quentin Kirrin in this series and his wife, they were great and Quentin was very much like his book self, eccentric, short-tempered,yet gentle and kind. Although, I wish we had seen a little of Julian, Dick and Anne's parents-they did occasionally come into the books, but I can't remember much of them in the series, at all-if you watch the 1996 series you do see them with their 3 children, a little. I wish more of Enid Blyton's books were produced for TV, children still love them and read them today. The 1996 series of 'Five' is also a very good one for those who enjoy this Blyton series.
The Golden Compass (2007)
Criticised unfairly-Enjoyable fantasy
I have read the novels and seen the film and have no complaints. This film is wonderful, lots of enjoyment. Criticism is unfounded! The acting was wonderful and the vision beautiful. This is a good fantasy film, which should be viewed as such. The novel of course is wonderful, as is the entire trilogy.
It's extremely difficult to put novels to film and many attempts fail, but this film has not failed, the film makers have produced an entertaining fantasy film based on Pullman's novels and have done this well, I believe. So, I disagree with the bad reviews given and the criticism made. If you want the entire rendition of the trilogy read the books but if you would like to watch an entertaining fantasy film I recommend this film. It's a great couple of hours escape from reality into a fantasy world.
Perhaps an attempt will be made to create a sequel, I hope so.
War and Remembrance (1988)
War and Remembrance review
I have had this on VHS and now on DVD for a long time, I love it and have re-watched it a few times. I must say that Jane Seymour was preferable to Ali MacGraw as was Hart Bochner to Jan Michael-Vincent. I have both Winds of War and War and Remembrance so I can say that I prefer Hart and Jane as I have seen both series. If you are going to watch this series do watch Winds of War first. The scenes in the concentration camps are horrifying and terrible, but this adds to the excellence of the program because you want to be able to emphasize with what is happening to these innocent victims and feel their pain, anguish, confusion and bewilderment.
