Riddick (2013)
A B+ retake on Pitch Black's original plot
This movie was okay. A restart for the franchise, brought the story line back to Riddick and away from the necromancer subplot. I Liked that it was low budget like the original, it helps create a more subtle story.
However, unlike the first movie which is a sci-fi retelling of Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat' introducing the Riddick character; a convict with a heart. This story focuses on Riddick and moves his life a long, which is good because that's what the whole story is really about. Riddick's redemption and road to finding out who he really is and where he actually belongs.
The pace of this movie is slow and drawn out, similar to Pitch Black. We see the monster before it comes down on all the humanity in the movie. The action scenes are still classic. Everyone's on their toes around Riddick.
The dialogue isn't as subtle and deep as Pitch Black. There's no question as to what's going to happen. Riddick actually gets his girl this time and says he's going too. Guess he's tired of having them die. Nor is she a protagonist, she's a supporting character. The Male Captain takes on Fry's role which is an irony all for itself that works out very well for Riddick.
if you have enjoyed the Riddick series, definitely go watch this. it's better than Chronicles.
84 Charing Cross Road (1987)
I'll probably never watch it again
I didn't not like this film, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again. I enjoyed the idea and I think the cast did a superb job. Anne Bancroft is a funny woman and she brings a lot of humor to her part, which was nice.
but the movie has that 70s decade of film making surreal understated feel to it. The kind where you're watching the movie and it feels like the story line is on a tread mill and all of sudden something tragic happens and the audience has to figure it out by caging camera movements and the actress crying. It uses these techniques instead of a film score to explain the story.
Now, I don't mind this style of filming. It works in other movies like The Thomas Crown Affair and the comprehensive movie All The Presidents Men, but in this movie I felt like it took away from a unique plot that would have been expressed well if the moments of friendship were dealt with closer attention, and not treated like collateral damage in some kind of 1960s peace movement documentary.
This movie could be remade and if done right the newer version would be better then this one. Remade by the likes of Emma Thompson and her gang of literary elites...Not The Lifetime Channel!
Just Go with It (2011)
liked it because of the sandler-aniston chemistry
This movie really wasn't that funny. It had some funny parts that made me laugh out loud, but the person behind me got a lot bigger kick out of it then I did.
However, I enjoyed the film. It's worth watching because of the dynamic between aniston and sandler. In this film you believe these to people could really make good mates for each other.
It was a good part for aniston. She wasn't the gorgeous chick in this at all and had to endure old jokes from a much younger cast member. (I actually don't remember when aniston was the hot chick in any movies but I feel like she was at one point...whatever). Her character is believable. I was moved by it for whatever reason. Kind of makes you feel like Aniston was playing herself for the bit with the exception of the children...though she looked good with them.
and I believe the reason why the chemistry between sandler and aniston was so good was because they are the SAME AGE!!! (that did wonders for the plot and story line...you know, made it worth watching...made it believable..I think we can thank Happy Madison Productions for that).
Pretty tired of films where the male lead ends up with a girl 20 years his senior. Just doesn't do it for me. This one is an exception to that rule and bravo to Aniston for taking the part and bravo to Sandler for giving it to her.
The Switch (2010)
surprised by reader rating on this movie
This movie would go into the Rom-Com category but it verges more on the romantic drama side of things, and is about Jason Bateman's character over coming commitment issues. Plain and simple.
It's not about Jennifer Aniston's character. Her part isn't very dimensional. It's about Batmen's character and he does a good job acting the part out.
I really liked this movie. I thought it was understated, mature, and depicted a modern family very well. The kid was adorable. I really felt like Aniston and Bateman were in love with each other, and I'm kind of bothered by the fact that this movie got a 5.9 star rating from IMDb.com I think people were expecting it to be a comedic, happy, fluffy rom-com and, to my delight, it wasn't. It was a nice character study on a self-righteous germaphobe, who realizes after playing the part of a father that he loves Aniston and her/his son and wants a family. He realizes that his need to be responsible for himself is greater than his fear of being close to people.
Kidô butoden ji Gandamu (1994)
I think people miss the point of this series
I've read many reviews of this show about people complaining about the cheesiness factor in this series. and I completely agree this series is really cheesy, but it's supposed to be! This series is meant to be over the top...It's a romantic story that focuses on character development and dramatic irony above anything else...above the cool robots and fighting.
The writers did a fantastic job making a cartoon incredibly dramatic.
Domon Kasshu is the main character. At the very beginning of the series we are given nothing but attitude to know who this character is...We then discover that this guys attitude comes from the lack of control over his life, the compromising position he's in. he's fighting for his father's freedom and life against his own brother....by the end of the story he's fighting for the freedom of the world against the woman he loves.
The whole story is a beautiful practice in dramatic irony. It's art average gundam lovers! and the anime they used to make this series reflects that. The collages at the beginning and end of episodes are basically paintings depicting the mood of domon throughout the episodes.
I particularly love one of them at the end where they made a still of him fighting in space against the dark gundam and in the back ground you see an imprisoned Rain-his partner-standing behind all of it. because she was driving the Devil Gundam at the time.
I also prefer the English dub to the Japanese dub but that's probably because I'm really used to listening to English. I didn't care that they changed the names of things. it didn't matter to me and as for the voices being overly dramatic...i thought the show was already overly dramatic and was meant to be...what's a little more drama?
