Oppenheimer (2023)
So long yet so rushed
At this point I'm done with Nolan. I actually abandoned this after about 1.5 hours. I'm sure the message and history is important but at 3 hours long I wonder how the editing and pacing is so frantic and rushed that no scene was ever longer than a 1 minute at best cuttign swiftly to the next, jumping between timeliness and cranking through character after character like a speed dating event. I didn't care about any of the characters, I didn't even have time to remember any of them. It was exhausting to follow without any moments ever getting any room to breathe yet the cramped 1.5 hour I did try to sit through felt incredibly boring. It's a no from me.
The Blacklist: Arthur Hudson (2023)
The best throw back cameo
Ok. This may be less about this specific episode and more about the show on the whole but damn I'm a sucker for a well timed, if-you-know-you-know suprise cameo.
There have been some episodes and seasons that were painful to get through in the ladt 10 years. I would even say that it all went a bit downhill after Keen departed but that would not be fair to the genius that is James Spader who has made this show what it is.
But, as a child of the 80s and the brat pack, I fully enjoyed the surprise cameo of Andrew McCarthy in this episode and I actually sat on my sofa applauding. It may just have made this all worthwhile. Well done!
The Blacklist: Boukman Baptiste (No. 164) (2022)
Ellie. 7 going on 16
Anyone else bothered that Ellie looked like a teenager? Isn't she meant to be 7 or 8? First seen in S3E1 in 2015 as a baby. Even if we account for a few time jumps (Agnes is also clearly not 6 or 7) why does she look like 15 or 16? And what 16 year old gets stories read to them by their mum? Sorry but totally threw me off.
Red Notice (2021)
Love a good heist movie
I love a good heist movie and I honestly watch anything with Ryan Reynolds in it and this did not disappoint. There are some obvious twists and some not so obvious ones. You get the usual quick witted dialogue you'd expect from a Reynolds performance . All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable movies.
He's All That (2021)
Not an amazing film but a fun, nostalgic ride
Is it amazing acting? No. Did it have great writing? Of course not. BUT if you're a millennial like me and were a teenager watching films like She's all that and Scream etc. Growing up, you will appreciate the cameos of Rachael Leigh Cook (she's all that) and Matthew Lillard (scream) and the various nods and funny references to the originals. Including the dance scene and random lines that gave me strong Stuart vibes. Honestly, I was kinda smiling throughout just because of those so it was worth it just for the nostalgia.
Aquaman (2018)
Cringe
So I actually enjoyed the movie overall as in, I was entertained but probably the wrong reasons. I never laughed at the clearly intentionally placed jokes because they almost always fell flat and laughed out loud at scenes that were clearly not meant to be funny but felt so overdone that they slipped into the ridiculous and felt like a superhero spoof movie (giant black manta helmet, cliche slow motion shots with hair blowing in the wind and longing looks, eating a rose, cringy kissing scene... Really, it was hilarious and I was waiting for Charlie Sheen and Leslie Nilson to turn up at any moment)
At times it felt like a text book rundown of every stylistic means from 'introduction to movie making 101' ca. 1985.
The other thing that bothered me was that they clearly 'borrowed' whole scenes and lines from other movies which I noticed a few times and it kind of ruined it for me. I mean there was an entire chase scene completely ripped off Independence Day... just saying
