La otra conquista (1998)
The Other Conquest
I really enjoyed watching this film because it gave me a bigger idea of how the Aztecs got conquered. This film shows the struggles Topiltzin, the main character, goes to show that although they might have conquered his people, his soul will not be converted. As I watched the film I didn't want to blink so I wouldn't miss anything. I was overwhelmed by the statue of the Virgin Mary as Topiltzin was being punished. None of the characters notice what happens only the actual audience, which makes us think that what really is being done for religion isn't what should have happened. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I did!!
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
Anything Can happen
Buñuel follows the logic of dreams in his film, The Phantom of Liberty. The Phantom of Liberty is composed of tableaux, a series of episodes, where anything can actually happen in real life. Buñuel's ironic criticism challenges and juxtaposes the modern world. Each Tableaux tells a different story like a man laying in bed around 3am when a chicken walks in his room then the man realizes his clock is 5min ahead, where a family makes a police report about their "lost" child with the actual child describing herself. These different tableaux were at times humorous. Buñuels cinematic style distinguish his films and shows that anything can actually happen in real life, so why not make a film about it to show these unusual events?
Qian li zou dan qi (2005)
A different approach.
Zhang Yimou, mostly known for his martial art and SIG films, takes on a different approach to his film Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. It tells the story of a Japanese fisherman, Takada, who's son has an incurable disease. Takada wants to redeem himself and receive forgiveness from his son. He sets out on a journey to China to film a Chinese folk Opera, Riding Alone for thousands of miles, which his son wanted to go back and film. On his journey Takada learns about his son and about himself. He realizes that although he is in a different culture, everyone is connected, which helps him understand the love for a child. In this film we see that Zhang Yimou films both China and Japan different. The different textures, and color tones distinguish both cultures.
Viskningar och rop (1972)
Touch...
Bergman's film Cries and Whispers tells the story of three sisters and their internal conflicts. Karen and Maria come to be with their sick sister Agnes, who is on terminally ill. Anna the maid, treats Agnes like a real sister unlike Agnes real sisters who pretend to care. As the story unfolds, the emotions are exposed in close ups, that reveal the truth of each individual. In Cries and Whispers, touch plays a significant role between the sisters and themselves. Karen doesn't want to be touched in any way, Maria wants to touch Karen, and Anna the maid uses touch to help the dying sister, Agnes, to overcome her pain. Throughout the film, the color red is used, in different scenes, the color of the furniture, drapes and walls. Bergman's use of red symbolizes the understanding of the human soul. Bergman directs these women wonderfully to get full emotion in his film.
