Difficult People (2015)
Way over-hyped.
It's a little inaccessible. The jokes would be funny, if I actually knew what the heck they were talking about. I don't live under a rock either, I follow pop culture. The casting is terrible. Is her dumb boyfriends supposed to be a straight man who is interested in this fat, uncharismatic, self-absorbed girl? He is an unnecessary character; somehow, he doesn't hang out with Billy and Julie, but he is in no way a foil to Billy. He's like a redundant piece of furniture. I think pretty much everything about this show (with the exception of Julie's costume design) is terrible. They somehow manage to make her appear smaller. But honestly, she's not cute, and she's barely funny, and this entire show is pretty indulgent. If you're not cute, be funny at least.
American Horror Story (2011)
I think it's really sad that this show is so popular, what does it say about us?
After having watched American Horror Story's first 5 episodes, and really really giving it a good try, I have decided that it lacks a certain reverence. These things that they are playing up, murders, home invasions, animal cruelty, they all really happen. I think that it is sad that we have to celebrate and trivialize such things with shows like this.
I am from Richmond, Virginia. A few years ago there was a terrible murder there of an entire family. Two little girls, and the mother were raped and murdered while the father was forced to watch. It was an absolutely horrendous event that will affect me for the rest of my life, just having been from there. When I saw the home invasion episode, it stuck with me how crass this genre can become. These events REALLY happen in people's lives, I don't think we should make a whole entertainment thing about it.
For some reason I don't feel this way about Saw, or the general genre of horror in general. Perhaps it is because this is "too close to home". The Saw movie franchise is not disturbing because it is so unrealistic, that it is almost funny. However, things like this, things that really happen to people: home invasion, rape, school shootings, putting DOGS IN MICROWAVES, I don't think that we should enjoy this.
There is plenty of research done to support the idea that playing violent video games or watching violent film can suppress aggression in the real world. However, the level of violence coupled with sexuality is disturbing in this show.
I think it says ducked up things about humans and America if we sincerely enjoy the sexuality and violence the way they go together in this show. Violence should not turn us on, the way that this show purposefully makes violence sexy, really makes me angry. I dislike it very much.
Man on Wire (2008)
Oh man, this movie was amazing.
This movie was amazing. I became really heavily invested in the people's relationships. At the beginning when we meet Annie, it is really interesting to see her description of Phillipe. She is clearly very in love with him, and by the end of this movie, I have decided that I really hate Phillipe as a person for how he treated Annie.
In the beginning when they first start dating, he pursues her intensely and they get together, but she just kind of is roped into his dream. She doesn't even really know him that well before they start dating, and she says in the movie, that he never really asked her if she had any dreams that she wanted to follow. In the end, she is forced to follow his dream to keep her relationship with him alive. Later on in the film they reveal that she is only invited to go to NY once, after Phillipe fails the first time and he needs moral support. It is mentioned in the film that she threatened him, insulted him, cried at him, and begged him for permission to go to NY and he never said it was okay for her to come, until HE has some sort of problem.
Annie's entire person really makes me sad. It is heartbreaking how supportive she was of him, and how easily he cast her aside for some groupie's pussy. Annie said it was exhausting for her to constantly try and figure out what was going on in his head. A lot of what happened was unfair to Annie because she was more of a mother figure to Phillipe than anything else. This is not the role of a girlfriend.
This movie, while a beautiful and haunting image, is actually kind of a sad story about an egomaniac Frenchman who does completes a dangerous stunt. In the process, he loses 2 significant relationships, but he does do the thing he set out to do, cross the Twin towers.
Ultimately this movie was a joy to watch, I just wish that it had ended better for Jean Luis and Annie.
Ying xiong (2002)
Oh man. so bored.
This movie is on right now. It is so boring that instead of watching it, I decided it would be more fun to come online and hate on it. My boyfriend is making me watch it before bed. First, I fell asleep; then I woke up and it was still on because it's so long. Also, it still sucked. So I just wanted you to know, don't watch it, it's bad.
There is no character development. I am so bored by the main character. Also, the females in this movie seem to be either extremely sad/emotional and weak, or really bitchy and emotional and weak. The characters in this movie thrive off of...being super stoic. There is no movement. Sure, the color scheme is interesting, but it is not enough to make up for the lack of actual plot. The film is nothing more than pretty drivel. It is not of consequence. There is nothing that matters. The Saw films held more cultural significance. This is just the story of some really moody Chinese people who are good with swords.
It's stupid. Why are people so impressed with wire movies? Its not like they're doing it without the wires. That would be impressive. It would also be impossible, so whatever. But yes, this movie is really pointless. Its just boring enough to have watched in a high school class as part of foreign language week or something. So bad!
