Cat People (1942)
Dumb Man & the Catwoman
I don't understand why this is considered to be such a classic. Cinematography is beautiful but the characters and the plot are so stupid that I don't believe I ever care to see this again. There are a couple of nicely suspenseful scenes but the characters are rather dull (even the much praised Catwoman). Almost any old "noirish" crime film contains much more atmosphere, suspense and shocks than Cat People. What kind of a man marries a woman who doesn't even let him kiss her?? And who does not even TRY to claim his rights as a husband (this was made in 1940's folks!) just calmly turns to another woman? Cat People is a movie that has certain historical value but it's really not that great to watch this time and age.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003)
Real Treat for the Fans of Hilarious Overacting
I'm shocked too see some very bad ratings for this movie. How could anyone call Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon boring?? I found it very over the top, cheesy and crazy... never boring for a moment.Every time I thought, "wow, it can't get any crazier than this" ...it did! And yet again and again! For example the scene where one of the girls tried to check out Hrithik's hands... ha ha ha! I nearly died from laughter! XD Watch it with a bunch of friends after a few beers... or, if you are a romantic at heart (like me) you may end up enjoying the romance at much as the silliness. The songs are good, especially the one (O Ajnabi?)when Kareena & Hrithik are on the deserted island. This is not serious cinema but very good entertainment.
Raaz (2002)
Campy fun with a magic lemon
This is one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've seen. I don't really care for horror movies so my friend suggested Raaz because it isn't really scary. The Professor (played by Ashutosh Rana) is a pretty funny, I kept wishing they would've made the whole movie about him because he made me laugh every time he appeared on screen! Music videos are pretty lame (almost no dancing) but the over the top acting makes this film entertaining in a demented way. The hilarious horror climax is worth a look. There are a lot of good movies coming from Bollywood but I guess horror or serious drama isn't really popular form of movie making in India, at least judging by this film. ;-)
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)
Watching this is a waste of time
I thought that this movie was nothing special but tolerable until the stupid ending just ruined it completely. I was waiting for the movie makers to merge the Suri/Raj characters into a more normal man but no! It would have made perfect sense because the geek and the weird fashion stud were both the same person and Taani loved them both!!!! But that wasn't meant to be; I watched with growing disgust as the honeymoon photos flipped by because an ugly, very middle-aged looking geezer and a young, beautiful woman didn't look like a convincing couple at all, more like a father and daughter!! I really hated SRK's mustache when he was Suri and the Raj character was way over the top and irritating.
Main Hoon Na (2004)
Major entertainment (sorry about the pun)
This is really silly movie but also very enjoyable. I would say this is harmless feel good entertainment at it's very best. Totally different roles for Shah Rukh Khan and Boman Irani compared to Don (2006)! SRK has never looked as good as in this film, short hair really suits him well. Zayed Khan is cute but overacted a bit. Actresses did a good job and were not annoying at all, that's rare in Bollywood movies (IMO, I'm a white European female).
I love such SRK movies as DDLJ, Duplicate, K3G, Don and Om Shanti Om (another Farah Khan gem) but I have watched this one most often. I would recommend this one to anyone not familiar with Bollywood films as a good starting point. Too bad we can't see Bollywood movies on big screen here in Finland!
