This is a review of the Yogi Bear-episode Foxy Hound-Dog only.
But oh, what an episode it is. Here only in his fifth outing, our favorite Yellowstone- inhabitant Yogi settles out on the typical low-key kind of adventure he's most famous for. It's not much more than Yogi himself stumbling across a fox-hunter with his dog Yowp who are on the search for a poor little Fox, but in this setup Hannah-Barbera creates some comedic wonder.
Firstly, there's the overly cute little Fox who serves as the film's central emotional core and who creates a bond to the audience with the innocence. He becomes the base for the plot while still remaining his own characterization. Yogi isn't so much a main player here than he is a wall for the comedy to bounce against, but that's how he works best and makes us glued to the screen.
By far the comedic highlights of this short though, are the antagonists consisting of the British hunter and Yowp. The hunter uses a pitch-perfect British accent to create comedy whenever he pops up, but especially the way he works of Yowp. Legendary Don Messick bringing his voice to the dog does a tremendous job and all of the hilarious barks is timed perfectly to make this one big laugh-party.
With a sweet emotional center in the fox, some laid back Yogi-interference and an absolutely perfect comic relief in Yawp and his master, Foxy Hound-Dog can stand proud as one of Yogi's finest moments.
