The Misadventures of Mistress Maneater (2020)
Witty, clever, and fun. Has some serious subtexts too.
Ava is so intelligent and knowledgeable yet not treated with respect because of her "day job". Not only does it make the point about judging a book by its cover being faulty but it also makes the point that a sexually secure woman often is seen as a someone worthy of ill treatment.
Meanwhile, she DIDN'T judge Boris by the stereotype not believing he was part of the Russian mob until the proof hit her in the face. Just as the Priest isn't the profiteer from NAZI spoils.
In fact, that was the big underlying subtext... not all is as it seems on the surface. Nicely depicted without a bludgeon. The film is funny and rather sweet with the romantic plot with likable lead characters you root for.
Loved the little "jokes" like her choices for ringtones.
The leads had good chemistry onscreen.
Nicely done, enjoyable film on many levels. Several laugh-out-loud moments.
The Normal Heart (2014)
Must see
Thought provoking and heart-breaking look back at the dark days of the early terror of HIV. It pulls no punches in showing that AIDS was largely ignored as long as it was primarily in the Gay community (should be to our shame). Makes you wonder how far we might have gone in the research and containment of this disease had we gotten behind ending it from the start. Lots of lip service from those who had the power to actually help but little action whereas in the Gay community shown in this film...the average person came up to the bat and fought with everything they had to save those they loved.
Beautifully acted and moving. Not a false note in the entire film. But aside from that it is important in content.
Grimm (2011)
Nice mix
Going to try to avoid spoilers in this review.
The writers have melded formula cop material with horror in a viable way. Add in a mix of humor, sprinkled carefully, and you have the makings of another Angel or Buffy. Beautiful locations that add to the general mood, rounded out with a good cast argurs well for this to be a successful entry.
The premiere gave all the basic information to follow the premise of a family line that can see the supernatural and have been dealing with the evil around us for centuries yet is letting the viewer "learn" along with the main character (the latest in the line to discover his "gift"). The supporting cast, human and otherwise, are strong characters as well. Nick (the latest "Grimm") already has a job as a cop with good instincts and his new talents, so far, have enhanced rather than disturbed his career.
Given the quality of writing and acting shown in this entry the show should draw viewers looking for something a bit different yet still within a comfort zone.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
does not get old
All these years later and this film is still one of those guaranteed to make me smile. My husband and I quote lines to one another far more than I'm comfortable mentioning (LOL).
Funny, poignant in places with a surprisingly strong plot and acting that is superb all round. This is a modern classic.
I was not a particular fan of Tim Allen until this film. He is brilliant! He has managed to do a PERFECT imitation of William Shatner at his most Kirkian.
Alan Rickman is understated in a role that could have been a bit too "out there". He captures Nimoy's "I Am Not Spock" period of denial wonderfully.
Sigourney Weaver was never more beautiful and perfectly cast.
Tony Shalhoub was marvelous with deadpan delivery of some of the funniest lines in any modern film.
All in all this is one to watch over and over.
Easy Wheels (1989)
One of the funniest "bad" movies of all time
Is it a biker flick? Is it about boys and girls gone bad and the consequences? Nope...it is a deadpan, play it for straight comedy that will have you rolling with the dialog is not the basic premise. SPOILER:
The whole concept of the biker girls stealing babies to have the females raised by wolves while the boys (useless) are sold on the black market and the male bikers quest for a truly good light beer should tip one off that they have entered a surreal world the Raimi brothers alone could create. The jail scene with the male bikers would be worth the price of admission alone to hear them try to pass themselves off as a traveling gospel group and then breaking out in a dynamite version of Rock of Ages!
The girls are hot, the story a hoot. This is a classic for this type of film. What makes it even funnier is that all the performers go at it as if doing Shakespeare....dead serious!
If you watched My Three Sons as a kid you might recognize Barry Livingston (Ernie the adopted son of the later years) as an reporter traveling with the male bikers.
Pop the corn and settle back for a fun ride.
