The Boondock Saints (1999)
Just Dreadful.. but could have been something better
I understand that this picture is pure fantasy and entertainment- to be taken about as seriously as The Rock or Alien vrs Predator- but I find it kind of repugnant.
#1 - Characters: Two brothers who are told by god to "kill bad people" go on a vigilante murder spree. These are our heroes. Willem Defoe plays not just a stereotypical loud and mean Investigator- (Telling fat cops to go eat more donuts is beyond tired) - but he portrays possibly the most ridiculous homosexual character ever put to screen. He dances through crime scenes, calls his lover a fag- and even cross dresses in order to aid the brothers when they are infiltrate some more bad guys. Wow.
#2 - Huge plot problems - The man hired to hunt them down and kill them was their father!? The movies climactic scene is a public execution in a court room?! There is more- but those two are the craziest.
#3 Waste - The action is undeniably well handled- and the cast does everything they can to sell this crazy concept- but in the end it comes off as the most frustrating kind of terrible movie: The kind of flick where you could see that with just a little bit of thought, and a little less heavy handedness- could have been quite good, or at least a lot of fun.
I am stunned at the cult status and high score this flick has obtained on IMDb- It is an empty exercise- and I am sort of shocked more people don't think so.
To be fair- I guess this picture does not ask or require you to think while you watch it- So- If mindless action is your thing- I guess check it out- just maybe turn the sound off.
Just saying.
Elephant (2003)
I don't get it...
The pace is slow to the point of no existent. The acting is almost uniformly poor. The kids seem uncomfortable in front of the camera. There is no real perspective or reason- or until the last 15 minutes any kind of conflict. School shootings are a horrifying phenomena, and though difficult, a subject that deserves examination. The violence in the film is the reason the film was made- and why it exists- so how is it not exploitive? This pic won many awards and is critically respected- but I found it empty and kind of disrespectful. If it had a point- I might be able to call it art, if it made me feel anything other than bored and frustrate I could call it worth watching. As it is- this is the worst kind of pretentiousness- one that hides behind its subject instead of exploring it. SKIP IT
Night of the Creeps (1986)
Out cheeses even Army of Darkness! I mean That as a compliment.
I know I know- it's cheesy as hell and it panders to the cult crowd with it's unsubtle name dropping- Still- this flick has it all. Aliens, serial killer, zombies, snake monsters- it starts in the classic 50s and ends in the ridiculous 80s- the flat acting seems pretty damn well suited to this blissfully stupid and fun horror comedy- Just turn off your brain- eat some popcorn and enjoy. If there is a better openly cheesy fan boy horror flick- I've yet to find it. I laugh just thinking about it. "Screaming Like Banshees!" "Thrill me" This was a way ahead of its time feature in the spirit of Army of Darkness- but- hate me if you must- in its own weird way- more successful- Check it out.
