India Untouched: Stories of a People Apart (2007)
Very relevant
We need more of such hard hitting documentaries because Caste system is very much here and unless we try to target this evil from many fronts, it is going to be as alive as it is now. I am happy that dalits/advasis are becoming more assertive with time, they are substantially contributing through art and literature in making this inhumanity visible to all.
Padosan (1968)
Kishore Kumar's eccentric acting wins the heart
I was familiar with its songs, which are very famous till this age. Kishore Kumar's talent for playing eccentric characters like Guru (Vishwapati) is what makes the movie special. Read it somewhere that Mehmood (it was the first film produced by him) convinced Kishore to play this character after so much of effort , but when film got released Vishwapati and his style overshadowed the role of Mehmood and Sunil Dutt. Eventually in final cut his role was toned down, even after this he shines like gem in the whole movie.
Gong fu chu shen (2009)
Food lovers will love it (minus the Kung Fu)
People may be annoyed with the fight scenes in between, it was annoying yes but what remained with me was that making of dishes with a beautiful voice over explaining the significance of the method used. Visuals were good, food was treated with utmost respect and everything about the food part was poetic.
Last sequence about cabbage soup and purity was captivating.
Shrikant (1987)
One of Doordarshan gems
I recall this programme with nostalgia when DD 1 used to turn novels (literature) into tv shows with such finesse and ease. Farooq sheikh has added charm to the character of Shrikant, Mrinal has also played her part convincingly. This story is about love, friendship, fate..and a bit of Burman backdrop.
56-nenme no Shitsuren (2020)
Another beautiful story revolving around mutual love for food
This movie is about a girl who aspires to be an excellent chef. Accidently she travels several years back where sje got to know more about herself, about her loved ones (when they were younger) and she finds her first love there...it is a lovely mix of emotions, goodness and most importantly food (how i loved the scenes where people had tears in their eyes after taking the first bite!). Any movie which makes food a central theme has to feel authentic to audience, one must be able to perceive the taste through actor's expressions...this film successfully delivered that. Apart from Fake Abebe character, all other characters are well sketched.
