Good plot and great characters!
8 February 2021
Not saying it will win any Oscars for drama, but the story was well written, the characters fleshed out, and the story fun and moving. I was pleasantly surprised by this film and would watch another just like it in a heartbeat.

Some merits but still a made for TV movie
14 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER ALERT* Interesting premise to the movie. There were basically three actors (including AI) with flashbacks including two more. The two main actors are fairly decent fits for their roles. As far as the tag line, "The earth is riding on one woman," it seems that this wasn't made very evident in the movie. The future is mostly riding on anyone blowing up the control room.

I mean, they go to this fortress (abandoned factory in California desert somewhere) to take out the drone hive mind. They go there three times. First to fail, then to steal disk, then forget it all and just blow up the control room the size of my bathroom with glass windows and technology from the early 90s. This somehow controls all the drones all over the planet...

With a little more thought and better direction, this could have been an amazing sci-fi movie. Instead, it had little character development and action that made you wonder how anyone could not have taken out the drones in one attack.

I would recommend watching Soldier or The Arrival rather than this as it is a mix of both, but not as good as either.

Treehugger message lost in horrendous plot
11 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Abysmal. Not much in the way of intrigue, plot twists, conspiracy theories, or even a plot that makes any kind of rational sense. As another reviewer posted elsewhere, the movie has the pace of 2001 without the quality. I can see how they tried to make a socially conscious movie, but it failed. The Joan Baez music was horrendous however the visual effects were fairly good for being 1971.

From the plot outline, Bruce Dern along with several other ships are told to nuke all the forests that are aboard ships in space. American Airlines and Dow chemical must have paid for a large portion of this movie as their logos are everywhere. The movie missed its message though. The message was lost in horrible acting and a storyline that has so many missing pieces that are necessary to the flow of the film. The movie is irrational, Bruce Dern performs a soliloquy for much of the movie (if you omit him talking to robots), Dern is filmed for much of the movie caring for bunnies and hawks that somehow don't kill the bunnies, and much more. Save your time and watch grass grow.

***SPOILER ALERT!!*** OK, as someone else posted as well, what botanist doesn't realize that the forest is dying because of a lack of sun? How in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster can the earth maintain any life with the entire planet at 75 degrees? Where are the animals on the planet that maintain the food chain if all the fields and forests are gone? There are a slew of others as well. The plot had almost no thought put into it other than conveying the one message: "Dont kill trees, we need trees!"

Dune (1984)

Long live the Fighters!!
6 July 2003
A masterpiece that has enthralled audiences for generations, the novel Dune is in my opinion one of the greatest novels ever written. It will immerse you in a universe based on humanity, yet so far distant from our present and so detailed in culture and language, that you would believe Frank Herbert to be from the worlds of Dune himself. In working with David Lynch, he has brought his imagination to the screen. I had to watch the movie 7 times before I understood everything. A movie like this captures the imagination of even those who do not like science fiction and pulls them to a place of beauty, horror, prophecy, religious zeal, political intrigue, power, and destiny. I highly recommend this movie to anyone.
