Neverland (2003)
Excellent tale of broken youth
Amazing retelling of J.M.Barre's classic tale of a boy who didn't want to grow up, and a girl who was growing up too quickly. Peter is a bipolar juvenille deliquent, Tink is an alcoholic "fairy dust" addict with Borderline Personality disorder, and Neverland is a sad, run-down amusement park, with Hook as it's "Director of Guest Services", which is a fancy title for Head Janitor.
Director Damion Dietz's vision was to "un-Dinsnefy" Barre's original tale, which is quite bizzare and disturbing, unlike the Disney version. He did an excellent job. You should definately try to catch this film at a festival or art-house, if for no other reason than the excellent performances of Kari Whalgren as Tinkerbell and Gary Kelly as Hook.
Crossroads (1986)
The unrealized talent of Robert Judd
Joe Seneca's performance in Crossroads is, without a doubt, a fine piece of acting. Ralph Macchio's performance was... well, it's Ralph Macchio, what you see is what you get. There is one other truly outstanding, albeit short, display of untapped acting talent in this movie, and that is the performance of Robert Judd as Scratch. With only one speaking scene lasting only a couple of minutes, Mr. Judd clearly and firmly established his character. The trickster Scratch, aka the Devil, comes across as a sly, manipulative fellow with just enough evil oozing out from the seams of his demeanor that the viewer is left with a chilling idea of just what awaits Willie Brown and Eugene if they fail to win Willie's soul back. It's a shame that the acting world lost this great talent before it could express itself more.
