Blockbuster (2022)
To balance put low reviews
Though this show is not top tier by any means, i do believe it should be rated closer somewhere in the 6s
With that being said, the writing is far from the best and the cinematography is very flat and generic. Reminds me of a version of Kim's Convenience; that type of humor and style, where everything tales place in 3 or 4 sets/locations with very little character development.
One thing that was very dumb writing-wise within the first 5 minutes of the first episode.. a custoner comes in the store, he explains being displeased with Netflix recommendations due to it reminding him of his wife leaving him and he gives the details.. Eliza says "yikes!" because the man's story keeps getting worse with each sentence he says.. then to only 5 minutes later have Eliza go on about how she was forced back working at Blockbuster because her husband cheated on her with a 25 yr old with the same name as him and she's living in a studio apartment she cant afford.. blah blah blah.. point is, her situation was exponentially worse than the customers in the store, yet she yelled yikes as if her life was perfect, which would be rude after a custoner disclosing his wife left him, but even more odd coming from someone whose husband cheated on them and so would more than likely have sympathy/empathy with the man instead of yelling yikes or commenting on his situation getting worse. It would have worked better if one of the other bratty characters yelled "Yikes" and Eliza scolded them for it and then we find out later she also been cheated on or if her back story wasnt equal to or worse than the customers.
Sloppy, poor, lazy writing like that is bad; and that was just the first 5 minutes. But there are a ton of jokes and quick quips that do land and work for me. As mentioned by others, it maybe could have worked better starting some years back or incorporating more flashback time to previous eras to see the transitions and peaks throughout the Blockbuster franchise, especially since the main character has worked there since 7th grade..
Overall not the worst show, comparable to a lot of Canadian TV shows I watch like Mr. Dee or Kim's Convenience. Does it deserve a 10, no; but definitely deserves more than a 5.
The Rehearsal: Scion (2022)
Over most viewers heads
This episode went over most people's heads feom what im reading in the comments. Nathan is genius. Everything was rehearsed on a flow chart. Nathan set up, delivered and executed everything to perfection. Somehow he knew the nature of the guy (Robin ?), he probably knew that the guy was a scum bag and would dip. Truly showing the hypocrisy and true nature of people in general.
Its definitely an enlightening episode. I had the benefit and privilege to watch all episodes back to back, which is helpful. I think this was good episode to lead into what would come. Not sure if thats how it was released, but going into the 3rd episode ot all made sense and i had an idea of what was going on so i could appreciate it.
Westworld: The Auguries (2022)
To balance the scales
Don't get me wrong, this is definitely not a 10 star episode by any means. But waaay too many low stars that arent justified, so im evening it out some.
With that being said, decent enough episode. Maybe too much lazily written exposition that could have come out in characters in a more creative way or have some faith in the audience that we are intelligent enough understand what an NPC is, (Free Guy literally explores this as a theme and in doing so, popularized the word/concept to general audiences who would have other been ignorant to ot 15/20 years ago) or we can infer other aspects (we dont need a constant reminder that 7 years has gone by, Caleb is married and has a daughter; by Caleb's wife Uwade awkwardly stating their relationships to one another and the amount of time thats elapsed. Thats not how humans interact, host maybe? Lol)
My biggest grievance in this overall pretty standard episode was Maeve killing whoever was going to attack/ murder Caleb and his family. How did she find him so fast and what resources does she have to get around? She says they weren't the only ones William was after, so what made her go to him first vs anyone else he may have been after as well; lucky for Caleb she showed up when she did. It's made clear they thought they'd never see each other again and that it'd been a long while since the last time they did, so how did she find him? She looked to be in an Alaska-ish/ winter cold secluded area and Caleb was in an area where its warm enough for no snow or cold breath as they talked and short sleeve as attire. But fine, lets say she did make it there some how in the time she did, still convenient that she showed up right as the daughter & Caleb were about to get murked.. a minute later and they'd be toast or a minute earlier and caleb would be having to explaining to his wife this robot with a sword and their history. Ex Machina to the infinity degree. But ok, i can wrap my head around that somewhat. But THEN Caleb's wife just writes it all off. Christ. She literally blamed him for being paranoid, giving his daughter PTSD, excessively training her, and saying their basic life wasnt good enough and that he missed the war, but when it's found out Caleb was ACTUALLY justified in all he's doing and someone actually does try to kill them, she never ever once apologized to him, not a single sorry for not trusting and believing her husband and maybe could have been more supportive of him through all this. The wife Uwade is annoying. She doesnt console him any kind of way after just freaking getting shot at smh she cries and makes it about herself and him leaving, he's the one that puts the daughter to sleep while shes just looking out a window, like why aren't you consoling your daughter, better yet packing bags and getting the F outta there. I mean, lets gloss over a strange lady with a katana in an advance world with A. I. guns just murdering someone in front of their daughter; lets not bring that up. I just felt the conversation after all that didnt go how it would in real life. She'd be packing bags to find a safe place now that their home is compromised and a target, she'd have a million questions i think just way more frantic, maybe some more concern for her daughter and husband and what just happened; i mean if he really did have PTSD and just got shot at, as a wife, i think she'd show some sympathy and empathy towards him, especially seeing as that he was right this whole time and just saved their daughter's life, and possibly some police involvement.. gun shots were fired lol. But nope, we have her guilting Caleb for going after the man that just tried to kill him and pretty much saying he's not a good father for leaving. Yikes. I just think that whole interaction after a near death experience could have had more realistic reactionary emotion and been better written/ executed. But hey, what do I know? Maybe 50 years into the future people are desensitized to violence and murder and being attacked and its just another day.
All in all, some of what i wrote was just nit picky.. thanks youtube.. but still valid, and maybe i interpreted something wrong. Oh well. Still found the episode entertaining and a good start to the world building going forward. Id give it a 7.8/10.
Emergency (2022)
Took me for a ride
Very good movie. Realistic and impactful. The acting is good from mostly unknown/ unfamiliar talents. Some cliche theme and common "college" buddy film tropes, but the message still hits hard.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Host woth the most
Host isn't as bad as people say.. its a show about cake for goodness sake. He's doing the best he can with the subject matter lol
I do find it odd the other contestants have to sit through 8 hours of the others baking.
The judging at the end could be inproved i think.
Overall, cool show/ concept with room for improvement.
I Want You Back (2022)
Decent enough
Music, pacing, editing, and plot reminds me of an early 2000s movie like As Good As it Gets or My beat Friend's Wedding lol updated with current references about dating apps and social media. Parts of it ( soundtrack and editing) really felt somewhat dated for 2022, especially with an R rating. Besides the forced and obvious rom-com tropes in the first 10 minutes, the movie is actually pretty good and funny. I did thoroughly enjoy the movie at face value and found it entertaining, just found chunks of it predictable and not bringing anything new to the genre.
Murderville: Murder by Soup (2022)
Pick your partner carefully
5 minutes in and this is tough to watch. Shes not interacting with engaging dialogue or responses. Its almost unbearable. Luckily, Will Arnette carries it. Its almost like Annie isnt in on the joke or aware its supposed to be funny. I understand she doesnt have a script, but that doesnt excuse missing the whole concept of "funny" and improv. She plays in a sitcom, guess i just expected more. Will seems to be spoon feeding her opportunities to be funny and literally has to say "i am trying to help you" lol which i feel like he honestly meant because she was playing the role too deadpan. Unfortunately, Annie is missing the mark this episode. Netflix played it smart to make this 4th episode and not 1st or 2nd in the series.
Edit: updated from a 5 to 7 after watching the whole British series for reference. I give her a little more credit and though she didnt seem to have as much fun in a comedic sense, she did maybe do the best at realizing clues. Maybe took the detective role too serious and could've maybe let loose some.
Drowning Mona (2000)
Hilarious
I first saw this on dvd back in high school and laughed out loud; watched it with my parents at least twice a week. Fast forward almost 15 years later and it's just as hilarious.
I think the movie is perfectly cast and paced. A lot of the jokes come so fast or subtle you have to pay attention to get them.
And its the first time I've seen Casey Affleck in anything, didnt even realize at the time it was Ben's brother.
Perfect example of what a black vomedy shpuld be.
The Premise: Butt Plug (2021)
Amazed
I literally cried and laughed and cried. Idk... Like what a concept and an emotional rollercoaster. I thought it was going one way and went another and truly a staple in the series.
Vacation Friends (2021)
Surprised Me
I literally laughed out loud so many times. Of course it's dumb, stupid humor, but totally caught me off guard. The premise isn't necessarily anything new, but very refreshing and entertaining comedy movie. Haven't laughed out loud at a film in a very long time. Don't take this movie too seriously.. think of it like a Will Farrell/ Mark Wahlberg or Dwayne Johnson/ Kevin Hart type vibes and it won't be a let down at all! Definitely highly recommend.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
On the fence
I think this movie is enjoyable. Imagine Zack Snyder's Army of the dead level action and senseless plot mixed with an Alien SciFi movie, a lot of people reference Kill, die, repeat.
I agree with a lot of people's perspective of joke placement. I think it is distracting to the tone and pace of the movie. And a majority of them don't land or are just awkward. Timing is everything in comedy and the movie takes itself too seriously to have it so unevenly scripted.
Most of the timeline stuff doesn't make sense or aren't explained well. They tried to bail themselves out "End Game" style but asking and answering certain questions on the audiences behalf, but I was still left wondering a lot more.
Like: why not introduce this future technology to the past and give them 30+ years to perfect it and time traveling while resources exist?? Why not send people from future to the past to train and prepare for what's coming? Seems idiotic to ruin/ destroy the past population to then have fewer people in the future to fight. Even if those people they were sending would die by the time the invasion/ war started, even in 7 years Chris Pratt's character could have
had several more kids to help populate the earth and possibly fight in the future vs him die in the future and end his bloodline. Instead of sending people to future, build forts/ bunkers and protection in the present. Development of new weapons and bombs. They aware of the first sighting. Start doing the research in the present to to preventative measures.. could have dropped an atomic bomb in the present and been done lol Start population protection programs on 2022 and start training soldiers young in present to fight in the future. Seems dumb to send chefs and plumbers and out of shape people just to practically die and weaken the current population and potential existence of skilled laborers. Seems like multiple timelines are existing? If he has the toxin in the past then technically his daughter's future timeline is erased and she wouldn't die because they have the cure/ toxin in the past and would know how to defeat aliens in present 30+ years before, right? Preventing the war from even starting. And if the dad from the past timeline is interrupted by jumping to future, doesn't that then change his past/ present events? His daughter would have new memories of him not ones as if his life was never interrupted. Seems like her future memories of him were as if he never traveled to future or came back with the toxin and saved the earth lol her future self would know he had the toxin in past and saved all of mind kind. That's the issue with time travel in movies. They bring up him dying in 7 years but I don't think they ever address or confront how or why.
They have the technology to send millions of people from past to future and back, just don't understand why they just don't send as many people as they can from future to the past. The ones that haven't been born yet (in the present) from every country could just repopulate in 2022 lol Also Chris Pratt's team just happened to have the science guy to know it was ash under the nail, his daughter happened to survive it all in future, be a scientist and in the army and find the toxin, wife coincidentally was smart enough to suggest the aliens came a couple years earlier than the invasion started, his student just happened to be an ash expert and Wikipedia in human form, his dad had a plane and was a pilot lol.. it's like he was just surrounded by all the right people. So if Chris Pratt in the present destroys the aliens, then the folks who were with him from the future and anyone else from future stuck in past should just cease to exist right? Their purpose for coming to past would no longer exist and their timeline would be erased because present events create a butterfly effect lol like their relatives/ parents could have been sent to the future and died fighting and shift events and timelines for their future. Luckily the plan went almost perfect because Chris almost started the invasion 30 years earlier lol if they were going to C4 the whole thing, then why risk lives trying to administer the toxin? So in the past, Chris prevents the alien invasion, so those people from future never come to the past right? So do all the people in the present who died in the future fighting aliens that technically never existed in the future just "Snap" or "blip" back? Are they still dead? Does the time travel technology still exist or all just disappear? If so, can they travel back to past before everyone went to the future and sacrificed their lives? Like so many questions lol
Overall though, actions scenes are really thrilling and captivating. Had me on the edge and I felt like there were some real stakes. CGI well well done and executed. Exposition was shoved in our faces. ADR was bad in some scenes. But my mom really enjoyed it and it killed 2 hours. Time travel movies are hard, I wish this could have answered some questions or tied up a few loose ends.
No Sudden Move (2021)
Seems like yal are lame
This movie is very intense and suspenseful. Anyone who rated this less then an 8 is slow and doesn't know good cinema.
Dave: The Observer (2021)
Great episode
Most the reviews that are negative are misguided. This episode develops characters and tells a great story. Too many of the other reviews want nonsensical silly episodes instead of grounded, dramatic episode.
This episode gives us a sense of internal conflict a lot of us face between Dave's two groups of friends. How you act and behave with one and being your true self or exposing yourself to another group. Same with Gata and his friend Tone, how Tone feels about Gatas relationship with Lil Dickey. Gives a deep dive in race and how relationships differ between how we view sexuality between the two races. A lot of good, funny, and insightful moments. As a black man I understand the difference of how I may act with white friends vs black friends and what's acceptable. And in my experience, the homo stuff is way more prevalent with the white group; the show definitely maybe exaggerated it some but in high school and college, it was something I definitely had to adjust to.
The TV show Atlanta which is also on FX with Donald Glover has similar themed and toned episodes that explore weird stories or social commentary.
The negative comment come from people who don't want to think or be challenged and just want cheap laughs that don't pay off. Very clear the viewers aren't open-minded or inclusive.
Upload (2020)
Good premise, bad execution
A lot of jokes fall flat. The show takes place in the future, yet all the references and music would be considerably old and dated, which would be fine if the show also used more/ additional original music or made up original shows/ movies as to not date the series. People don't do the whip or nae nae dance any more now, let alone 13 years into the future. And 50 first dates isn't relevant now so I can't imagine a future where people are just casually watching it throughout the show.
Why would the Angels' avatars look like their real selves except different hair? Seems dangerous since the real world can interact with this Lakeview world and as we found out, people can find out where the live employees live. The therapist is a dog, seems to make sense to have the angels avatar be something universally shared by all employees so they all look a like or be non-binary.. this shows love conflict wouldn't exist if the angel was a floating beach ball or the avatar showed up as the fat guy every time no matter who the real life human version was. Or make it something the guest wouldn't want to have sex with, again, the therapist's avatar was a dog and we saw July used Nora's avatar, so the avatars can literally be anything and used by anybody.
Nathan Brown signs a contract on the fly without reading it to be uploaded. Something of that magnitude I think would need lawyers involved and be done in competence, in advance, not on the fly as you're potentially dying. And it's later revealed his vitals were good, so what hospital would allow him to follow through with essentially committing suicide? Malpractice maybe?
The side stories with other characters a lot of times serve no purpose but to pad run time. Could have been better used world building or fleshing out the characters more. Most of the other characters are cartoonish caricatures that behave in ways that aren't relatable. No one behaves those ways in real life, the funeral scenes being the biggest perpetration. Don't know what kind of reality this supposed to be grounded in.
What's the point of f bombs and sex scenes and not actually showing breast/nipples? No half measures. What little they can do to make the show somewhat believable, they snatch away by unrealistic sex scenes but oddly choose to go for it with the boy who turns into a girl briefly?? Go hard or go home.
People's avatars don't match. Unless someone wanted to be black and white on purpose or continue to be old and rusty in their afterlife, why wouldn't you choose yourself in your prime? Or choose to be anyone in the world? It's been established the angels can alter avatars and even changed one older girl back to a young boy, so why not just make him an older teen now he's 19? They took off private parts and fingers so easily; don't get why not just alter the old rich man to be younger or the 2 ladies in black and white to be in color. They used memories and pictures to create Nathan, so unless the older ladies never took a color picture like ever in their life it wouldn't make sense for them to be in black and white.
For such advanced world and technology, why are people's music, movies and clothes choices still like the 2010s. You would think the costume and set designs would be somewhat more futuristic beyond combining unrelated company names and self driving cars, even slang change every 5-10 years.
Why would Ingrid need to or even want to rent a VR body sensor suit? Seems like a purchase you would just flat out buy for how it's intended to be used & she clearly has the money. Why did Nora's dad need a body suit to enter but any other person almost exclusively needs just goggles or sunglasses other times?? Lol
Police drones with an iPad? How does that help a car crash or what if he had illegal drugs or a hostage in the car? How practical is it?
One person in Lake View has been there for 6 years and still a little boy as an avatar; meaning this technology exists in 2027, if not earlier. Find that very hard to believe. Is your uploaded consciousness able to grow and mature? If uploaded at age 11/12, he'd always have the mental capacity that of an 11/12 year old & would probably behave like an that forever. If he is going to grow and mature; wanting babes by the pool, to drink and cuss and what not, he would also understand why his childhood friend has grown and moved on (which probably would have been established way before 6 years in) and why his brother is dating lol can't be both. If his consciousness can grow and mature as artificial intelligence, why wouldn't his body as well? And as established, there's 100s of thousands of people there, but you can only see certain people at a time based on the floor you're located on but who are all those peoples' angels? And how come we as audience only see like 4-7 people? We see his gay neighbors like twice and the old rich man, black and white lady, and the army vet plus a few other quirky characters, but there should be a 100+ people or more between 5 floors I mean we only ever see a handful of angels where Nora works and she only seems to take care of 2 people, so that's a lot of ground to cover for the millions of people there.
How does interaction work with the outside world? What connects the persons consciousness to sunglasses or VR goggles? How does anyone just have access to Lakeview? If all it takes is a set of VR goggles, why wouldn't Nathan's mom or niece or girlfriend just always hang with him outside of schools & work? Ingrid uploaded herself (suicide), but all she had to do was put on a body suit (for sex) or goggles (any other interaction). When the outside world visits, how is it that they don't get mixed in with the guest Nathan can't see? Can people from the "real world" see all the other million guest? Wouldn't his niece & mom be seeing every single guest there all at once since they're not assigned a floor or how does the filters work with "humans" who visit? Why are they only able to interact with guest specific to only the ones Nathan sees? When Nora's dad does the tour, why was it Nathan's floor he interacted with and not some random 20 floors above or below him? Why wouldn't he see all the guest all at once since he isn't assigned a floor that filters out the other guest? Why could that 1 guy vlogging in the first episode point out frame rate dropping & play it back and forth? How is he able to interact with other avatars experience like that? Why does frame rate glitch while jumping in the lake, but then it never ever glitches again, breakfast time for instance would have a lot tons of people, but just happened to glitch at that moment lol how does the elevator work with millions of people constantly using it?
The technology of the hand phone thing isn't ever addressed or explained. A lady literally watched a movie from her hand somehow. The concierge makes no sense. What's his purpose? If he can duplicate & be everywhere & handle tasks at Lakeview, be a therapist sometimes & essentially do everything, why can't he just be programmed to be the "angel" for everyone & eliminate as much human interaction as possible with the dead "uploads"?
Nora, Ingrid and Nathan's mom can just upload from anywhere, even when she's not at work. Seems like intellectual property Horizon would protect at all cost, like you would need to be in their facility to interact with the uploaded. What are the rules to getting access to Lakeview or your consciousness working in this VR world? How is such big software company not aware of the grey area & hackers? Seems like they would hire companies to protect their IP since software is their business & be aware of breaches & hackers and get it patched. Why is there a such thing as breakfast being over for people who do not even need to eat? Was there an intake process to explain the rules and times to the clients? Why establish Nathan can control his own weather just to later contradict & allow someone else to change weather settings?
A lot of obstacles & conflicts are contrived & convoluted. Nathan running out of data gigs as soon as Nora wants to open up to him, why did she phone in old fashion style instead of video calling like she literally just did or using her avatar to appear in person? She knows he's in a 2 gig room and has been using data, why would she assume the worst and not that he ran out? The same in reverse; Nora being put on probation & her boss for some reason using her avatar when he happens to opens up to her; so many scenarios are forced and taken out of context.
Consent camera was cool and funny, too bad that never happens in any other sex scene. Also cool coincidence Nathan and Ingrid's Gma happen to be on floors to see each other even though I imagine they died years apart. She would be several floors above or below.
It's like the angels only oversee a couple people each & have A LOT of time to dedicate to those individuals, but it was established in the first episode that there are millions of people there & no way Nora would have the time she has to dedicate to Nathan alone or a reason to really give him any more attention then her other clients. It's shown she uploaded a lady before Nathan, so why is she never seen again? People die every day & it's established at least over a month has gone by, but she never gets new people. So many people and plots get brought up in the show and never explored again or paid off. Nathan's aunt dies and it's never revisited.
Even if your consciousness gets uploaded, your "spirit" or soul would still go to heaven or hell if that's what you believe in So I don't know what the real debate there is? It's just a copy of their consciousness not the actual thing I imagine so the philosophical aspect kind of falls flat.
There's never any real consequences or stakes. Many fireable offenses take place at the work place, yet no one ever gets fired. Even when someone was put on probation, she got her job immediately back lol.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
Nobody wins when the family feuds
Wow. What an amazing show. I had given up on scripted series/ programs for a while because nothing recently coming out felt captivating or grabbed my attention. Most shows felt contrived and so I had fallen into the cycle of rewatching old shows or watching YouTube clips lol
Looking for a reason to keep paying for amazon prime, I scrolled through their shows to see if anything caught my eye. I saw several previews for zerozerozero months ago and I had my interest and even put it on my watchlist, but I think when it premiered, I was already tied up in multiple other series and eventually forgot about it.
In desperate need to find something good to watch I gave it a shot and boy did it not disappoint. Every episode is shot well. The score and music is perfect; adds dimension and depth to the sequence and scenes. The score turns simple suspenseful moments into something even more intense. This show is like Narcos mixed with Ozark. And a hint of Suicide Squad because any character can die.
I felt like there were real stakes at play which made the show engaging. Made me empathize, pity and despise characters. The rise and fall of individuals are done intelligently. I like how the story is told and sometimes retold from each characters POV: the supplier, broker and buyer.
And seeing how 30 minutes to and hour or sometimes a whole day can unfold as events play out and pieces to puzzles are put together from each different perspective is smart and creates mystery and thriller in each episode. I enjoyed that the series was short and I appreciate the slower moments used for character development. I think there's enough action, filler, and exposition to create a good balance of entertainment. I think because of how the show jumps back and forth in time from different POVs, exposition is mostly shown rather than told.
The parts in mexico were some of my favorite, but the Italian story is the most interesting.
Watched the whole series in 2 days. The acting is good. I think that most characters spoke their native language of their character. Hate when everyone "knows English" or always speaks it as a convenience to the audience. I think for the most part everything was as realistic as an entertaining show can and should be. Cinematography and locations were on point. The amount of betrayal in this show will have you questioning your own friends and family lol
The last episode was very emotional and wrapped everything up mostly, but left room for a second season. I think it maybe wrapped up too fast, but that was probably due to not knowing if it would get picked up again, so tied up all loose ends.
Betrayal is a business not worth investing in.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Who cares?
Bad. The caretaker is horrible. No one is truly likeable. Not sure who to root for. The cat and mouse game is weak. The "mob" folks straight up kill some people.. but do the dumbest things with the main antagonist caretaker. Just kill her like the other people, don't leave it to chance. The judge is a complete idiot. There has to be admissable evidence and signs of patterned abuse and mistreatment.. why didn't the lawyer fight harder or present better evidence?? Again, I reiterate.. the mob folks straight up murder some characters or attempt to at least and leave other up to chance and once again, who are we supposed to be rooting for? The horrible caretaker who takes advantage of seniors or the son of a mob enterprise? Completely idiotic. Like how is this guy a mafioso, but not infiltrate the nursing home like Joker in Batman movie.. like send 10 guys in there and take out the security.. and torture the caretaker woman til she tells you where the stones are.. she's a civilian.. she would flip with the right tactics.. she's not CIA or trained to not tell.. and the mob did a bad job tossing the house looking for the diamonds. The girlfriend should have died to make the the stakes worth while.. I can't root for the horrible caretaker knowing how bad she is without her going through some type of horrible loss for me to have any empathy or sympathy for her. I cut the movie off with 30 minutes left I was so mad.
Your Honor (2020)
No Honor
So bad. Not a single good character, and all the half decent characters get murdered or blown up. I will say pretty good cinematography; it is shot well like Ozark and the acting is really good. Expected more NO accents too. It's a show that of you watch lazily or just have on as background noise it is perfectly fine. My mom would love this show.
Fia the mob daughter is melodramatic.. strictly there to push plots and create conflict and tension. Was very annoying.
Most of the black characters get it the worst.
I do praise the lawyer, I think her name was Lee. She was one of the sole characters with any redeeming qualities.
Not to too much compare to Breaking Bad, but Walter White got it as much as he gave it. There were real stakes at risk. Not here tho. I mean never lost his money, or home, or job, never too seriously injured. Fake out with the dog having a seizure, but that wasn't in retribution to any of the characters actions. Maybe if there's another season he'll pay in some way.
It's like every cop, warden, sheriff, lawyer, politician is corrupt or incompetent. There are no rules or a moral compass to guide the show, completely lacks compassion.
Each event goes beyond unrealistic and unbelievable. One deus ex machina after another. Coincidences of this magnitude just don't happen. And if the show was a dark comedy like "Patriot" or some parody or satire, I'd get it, but the show is set in a realistic reality.
Adam, The judge's son, somehow manipulated his way to having a relationship with the sister of the boy he killed. Christ. I mean, in an episode she admits not knowing his last name, but just goes on several adventures and car rides with him? Where is the security for the 17 year old mob bosses daughter? Lol A driver takes her to the vigil but she has her own car and drives herself everywhere else. They establish a relationship somehow after a brief encounter at the brother's vigil and then as her older brother gets arrested, she confides in him as if they've been bff's their whole life, but couldn't have known each other for more then a few days at that point. She didn't have a school mate or childhood friend to confide in other than him? She clearly liked his picture on Facebook and commented they were in a relationship, so she at that point had to have gotten a last name I would assume and it looked like she didn't ever tie him to the car or the judge in any way? His dad's picture was in the newspaper in an article involving her brother's death, she was on his social media, the last name is unique.
And Adam loses his asthma after episode two. Pretty dumb seeing how much of a major plot device it was. Has 3-4 attacks in the first 2 episodes and never uses his inhaler again.
Officer Nancy Costello just lets anything fly with the judge. Like how many incidents and inconsistencies need to be presented before she starts asking questions and does real police work and investigation. The judge has been acting out of character around her, stories not matching, having her search license plates and cars.. all in a short period of time and she doesn't find it odd?? even at the dinner the dog finds a cloth with blood and she doesn't do anything further, under the circumstances she should be more intrigued. Especially since Lee, the attorney defending Kofi says the judge recommended she defend him and that they together visited the mom's house. Red flags to me.
Police officers, judges, wardens, sheriffs, correction officers and guards all just blatantly breaking the law or disregarding the rules. Is all of New Orleans law enforcement evil? Not a single redeeming trait for anyone which makes this show hard to appreciate or relate to. The only ones I sympathize with end up dead.
The mob boss is so inconsistent in character. Blows a whole family up, including little kids, after Kofi is already murdered by his son, instead of shooting at the actual desire gang themselves or blowing up their headquarters. But then is hesitant to kill the judge and his single son WHEN HE KNOWS FOR A FACT AT THIS POINT HE IS THE REAL KILLER!! Like why blow up a whole house of people who were actually innocent and then not kill the man and son who you know actually killed your son? Then when he find him at the harbor, why even ask questions or talk to him? Just shoot him. But nope, blackmailer gets killed, just another expendable character and the judge gets away once again. So aggravating.
The son had multiple opportunities just to turn himself in. Thought at one point that's where it was goin when he took pictures of himself and crime scene, and especially after learning everything that's happened to Kofi, but nope. The son is the most evil besides his father. Mind you the father has covered up at least two murders now. And even the teacher in the show is sick, sleeping with a student. No one in the show has any integrity.
Too many times things happen with no one in site. The initial accident happens in front of a chevy Truck or SUV, bot no other cars pass? No other people at the dock or harbor or river when the blackmailer gets shot and killed and tossed? The judge's noisy neighbor notices everything, bit doesn't see the one time Kofi steal the car which would be evidence that he didn't have it at time of murder. She saw the son pull.in and kisses cleaning it. Police didn't ask around as a witness?
I'm stay in Atlanta, maybe our court system is different. But no way in hell is a bail hearing and plea hearing being done at the same time. Evidence has to be presented to to a judge even go to trial, the defense lawyer goes over evidence with the client and makes a recommendation based on what's been presented. Why plea guilty or not of you're unaware of the evidence against you? I've been arrested 5 times on a magnitude of different charges and my bail hearing, whether granted or denied, was always at least 1 month if not several months before returning to court and entering a plea.
I could go on but have given up on episode 8. May return and update my opinion.
Update: finished the show. Only one person gets what they deserve. I mean by the end of the epsidode 10, everyone who is important knows the truth and some are sworn to actually have to do something about it and others have the resources to make something happen. Left up in the air on who will do the right thing. Your Honor needs to be locked up and investigated and the carlo kid retried. He covered up 2 deaths, poisoned a witness.. so interfered will a trial, tampered with witnesses, evidence, and the jury.. I mean damn. The writers literally do everything to make the judge out to be the worst human possible. And maybe there's a second season, but the subplot of the black Chevy that shows up in two episodes never too much gets revealed, nothing comes of the dirty cops or the mom's affair.. how is such a presumably good judge until his son's accident still caught up with a crooked politician running for mayor? Like I get they're best friends, but he's a sitting judge who calls him to "make a car disappear" but then seems confused at the language he uses to talk to him in the barbershop and by the end of the season, the judge is using similar if not worse language with everyone he encounters. Also, inhaler shows back up in about episode 8 or 9, only when convenient to push plots along or make a reveal.
Bliss (2021)
Mind blowing - tough pill to swallow
The movie itself is great and kept my company and I guessing the whole time at the edge of our seats (bed lol) what's real? What isn't? Ar the very beginning before he leaves his office to talk to his boss, they quickly show the rehab place and if you pay attention to his wallet on his desk, it kind of glitches and disappears. He's clearly on a medication (maybe) and couldn't get his refill and that's when his reality becomes distorted. Maybe those weren't prescribed to him or he was abusing the drugs or taking more doses then recommended (sounds like on the call he ran out sooner then he was supposed to or got more refills then he remembered). From that point what real in his mind and isn't is a mystery to me.
Knowing that he's mentally ill and on drugs makes the skating rink part more intense. Why the woman was judging him or shaking her head and then the chaos he must have brought thinking it was "powers" or they weren't real. There's a point when leaving the skating rink, he and Isabel steal some hats and coats and are outside the rink and he watches himself get arrested and then who we thought were them were actually other homeless people. That was a cool visual to me and imagery.
The daughter especially is very important and it may take a watch or two to pick up on everything. I applaud his daughter and her persistence in not only trying to help her father, but also being patient, loving, understanding, and accepting of him as well. A lot of the brother's and sisters dialogue make it clear the dad has some kind of problem for a while. It's not the first time and is something that's been happening. Pay attention to when he's buying the food and the son sees him and ignores him, the cashier's reaction to it all when he orders and doesn't have the money (call back to the opening with his wallet in the desk), very telling this man is delusional and out of touch. Most addicts always have excuses for their use, from what the son said it seems like maybe pain pills. (Also, notice the change of clothes and his look and the reaction of his coworker when he leaves the bar the very first time when he thinks his boss is dead, think the daughter calls back to that when she later in the movie says he's been seen panhandling outside of his job again. It could be implied at least 2 weeks have gone by that he and we are unaware of since he misses the daughters graduation).
The trailer was very misleading and even the taglines/ description when I googled before watching penned this movie as a sci-fi esque love story. There are elements of science and the story is fiction and scene that display a live interest, but this here at its core is a deep dive into mental illness, drug addiction, and the distortion of reality from the combined of a troubled man and his love with ignoring reality; living in a state of Bliss (see what I did there lol). Drugs / an addiction so powerful that it persuaded him his own daughter wasn't his and questioned her reality.
I watched it twice and appreciated the movie more knowing what I was actually getting. Every line or action has a purpose once you understand the true meaning of what's all going on.
WandaVision (2021)
I envisioned something different
Love the writing and presentation. I understand and accept the style and format the show is presented in and appreciate it greatly. Pretty genius and different; I like this approach to story telling.
My biggest concern or nit pick is why didn't Wanda showcase the same powers or abilities during infinity wars? If she can rewind time, manipulate reality, change timelines or how events play out; then why not do that with Thanos?? And if Vision has a mind stone and is embedded with Jarvis, why is he such a dunce sometimes. He reads books for insight or acts stupidly at times as if he doesn't have the knowledge of Jarvis or all the information of the internet and Tony Stark at his fingertips. Just seems out of character for those two at times. If Wanda has these abilities in the show, she should have used them before the snap and if Vision has a mind stone and what I imagine as infinite knowledge, why read books or be completely clueless at times?
Perpetual Grace, LTD (2019)
Amazing
This show reminds me more of the Amazon web series Patriot than some of the other shows mention, even similar to another Epix series Get Shorty. And it makes sense as to why it's so similar to Patriot in theme with it being written and created by the same guy, Steve Conrad and even featuring many of the same actors. The absurd situations the characters go through and how they get out of them is what makes the show amazing and funny. Talented cast. Amazing acting. These are the types of series i like. Hate that it was cancelled. I think the show would have been way more successful on Netflix or Amazon, Epix wasn't the best medium.
I don't know where the bad ratings from an unrealistic aspect or "nonsensical incoherent plot". It's no worse then many dark comedies or absurdist shows like mentioned above in many other comments, Fargo, Patriot, Get Shorty amongst many others
Euphoria (2019)
Mediocre
Not a single likable character.. excessive and exaggerated. Maybe more of a college setting could make it more believable.. interlocking stories all filled with drama and depressing moments and people who just don't act like how humans do all concentrated in one school/ town is outrageous. It's good acting and decent dialogue.. shot well.. but make me like or empathize with someone.. give someone a decent characteristic
Why Women Kill (2019)
Women rule the world
Show is great. Cool, simple premise. Only on second episode so my review is partial. So far I Love the costumes and set pieces for each era. The dark comedy is amazing and well written. Acting is great, especially the men and women from the 60s and Lucy Liu. They capture the mannerisms of how it was like to be a man or woman in each one of those times periods. And the mystery builds after the first episode when it's revealed that it may or may not be the husbands that the women kill. The transitions between the stories are cool how they play off each other sometimes. Very well worth the watch, so far.
Edit: I've watched the full series. Beautiful. Lots of interesting/ dark twists and turns; even as campy and soapy as the show can be. Season finale made me tear. If nothing else you have to catch the last episode. The show has flaws, no doubt. An episode or two were rushed or outlandish, but the show in general is, it's supposed to be this fantastical world. So many mixed emotions from ALL of the characters involved. There's a live/hate relationship with all of them. The writing and directing do a great job of layering everything and wrapping it all up. Job well done.
Evil (2019)
Evil Lives
I love the show for the most part. The girls are my favorite part to be honest, nice comedic anecdote to offset some of the other mature elements. If you can actually make out what they're saying over each other, it is quite hilarious. To be honest, all of the complaints about the kids, but not as many for the Grandma is what worries me. She constantly leaves the kids unattended and puts them in danger. Literally let a grown man, practical stranger really, in the room with the kids with the door closed.. and let the kids disappear on Halloween.. along with multiple other bad habits... Doing it in her daughter's office; door unlocked.
It's a really cool concept to bring up religious situations or phenomenon, and then explain it through science or reasoning, but while at the same time leaving a sense of mystery that the supernatural elements could really exist.
I was bummed about the episode with the parents killing the kid and them not pursuing it, like the conclusion of the episode was cut for time lol. Also, at times, I hate the the team holds back so much important information from each other. The dreams, visions, encounters from possible "demons" or details that they keep from each other at times irks me. The autopsy incident too, of course. Also, when David gets served and has a deposition, why didn't they make it known that the woman's husband said it was his choice to continue with the exorcism as long as Kristen was in the room. It was his choice to continue lol
Hate how shows like these have practically all the action taking place in the same city or state.. pages from a book written in the 1500's just happens to be readily available at the same church David is at.. most of all the evil 60 people so far are in New York.. the woman who was a "prophet" was in new york..
For me, of all the shows that don't have to be so mature or gory like "Twilight Zone" or "Tell Me a Story".. excessive cussing or risque moments, this to me WOULD be the show for sex, cussing, nudity.. to me, or at least be grittier then what it is, I guess because the international broadcasts and syndication they cant, just would have loved the show to have some edge on it like Preacher.
Besides that, I like the concepts. The acting and story arcs are great. Hope they can build this world more in season 2. Feel like I'm always left with more questions.
Warrior Nun (2020)
So much potential
It has potential. I'd say it is similar to an extent to any YA fantasy or sci-fi drama ei Motherland : Fort Salem type show. Too much narration like "You" or "Daybreak" which are both Netflix originals.
People here are so dumb tho, they think "Netflix" is actually making the show.. Netflix greenlights and maybe purchases the rights, but as a company has very little to do with the actual stories or scripts.. and I'm sure didn't have much to do with the actual production of the series.. a lot of times in these instances, the show is already produced and shot and Netflix is just the distributor. So to blame Netflix is completely ridiculous.
The show could use better dialogue at times and the fight scenes seem too choreographed. I get bored with the teenage angst and some of the drawn out life lesson dialogue.. more action and shooting or do a better job of building this world and developing the characters.
Ava tho is a total jerk. Given a second chance at life and can walk after being bed ridden majority of her life and just acts a complete a** when blessed with a second chance out side of a few moments of humility. The nuns should just take the Halo out of her back if she refuses to follow the plan or be on board with their ideology. That simple. Because of that fact and the CW feel of rhe show that should be a tid bit grittier in nature, I have to give the show a 6. Ava goes on saying she didn't ask for any of this over and over again, but at the end of the day, the Halo is a part of the OCS, so If she is just gonna be an a**hole the first 6 episodes, then just take the Halo from here and end it all. Problem solved.
Edit: Horrible wigs on Ava in flashback scenes lol and you can tell the show was shot out of sequence. Shotgun Mary's hair/ braids looks rough and frizzy in first few episodes and then perfectly freshly braided in the 5th/6th episode lol kinda ruins continuity a little for me. Production/ hair and make up matter, braids like that do take a long time to have to redo and hard to keep fresh looking after a lot of sweating over days time, but then you have to keep that in mind when filming.
The CGI is pretty decent for the kind of show it is.
I like inclusiveness and diversity and love some of the messages they want to make.. but the execution was bad. For instance, woman are strong and don't need men to be White Knights saving them, right? But LITERALLY she was yelling help while drowning in a pool she jumped in, instead of swimming at the beach she was just at of course, so JC jumped in a saved her (by the way, why didn't the Halo just glow and levitate her out the water or help her swim like it helps her fight at times?) and then the shower scene, she yelled like she was being attacked, so of course JC came running in, but then after when they're eating breakfast, she's like "I don't need you to keep rescuing me, I can slay my own dragons" which is over the top, out of no where and he only has rescued her when she was about to die or screaming like she was about to die lol
Hanna (2019)
A fantastis thrill
Great show. Love that the seasons are short and not drawn out. First season, as with most shows, has its struggles, but it definitely builds in the 2nd season. Both seasons are great entertainment and captivating. I couldn't rate it more then a 7 because they make no character likeable. There's times you want to root for Hanna or be on her side and then she just does something completely left field. Also, in this world, NO ONE locks their phones lol everyone just grabs anyone's phone and has complete access, especially the second season. And boy do some of the characters have the absolute worst luck and timing and then some others have the absolute best lol nonetheless, it is a well acted, scripted, scored and shot digital series by amazon. As far as season 2, it was a little uneven for me towards the middle once everyone got to the meadow's. The girl Sandy had a dramatic character change it seems by like the 6th/7th episode. Went from being very naive and almost dim witted good ol' girl. Saying one of her friends cursed too much and reading the Bible and learning life lessons like forgiveness, to this extreme savage lol the actress who plays Hanna does extremely well. I liked the character Leo, a part of me felt like at some point in the series the character Terri Miller would have a change of heart or become empathetic to the girls before the very last minutes of the last episode. Pretty much season 2 was a reboot of a lot of season 1 ideas and concepts, but on steroids lol
Had to make an edit because I'm baffled; people on here complain about how slow the episodes are, but also want plot and character development.. that takes time, duh. People complain about the show being a "teenage drama".. the movie got the same complaint.. lol like poeple are really saying the movie is perfect?? Gtfoh!! the show stuck pretty close to source material as far as her relationship with the girl and her family on holiday in season 1. The movie did the same except the show is capable of going further in depth to give us background and an understanding of the girl and family dynamics so we understand why everyone makes the decisions they do. The show actually made their interaction more interesting and relatable. If the show went too far from the movie, there'd be complaints regardless lol and the movie wasn't that great if you read the reviews, it's filled with flaws and plot holes galore because it tried to jam pack a million inconceivable things into a film. The show takes its time helping to elaborate and explain some ideas, or iron out the flaws in the film. Someone mention Hanna punching trees as an issue as if her DNA hasn't been modified or how skinny she is to be running with bricks in a bag and training, but fail to mention she's been living like a survivalist.. little to no calcium from milk or essential vitamins and minerals to help a body grow and develop properly. The show still makes its mistakes with internet use, as the movie did, like someone mentioned before she would have cleared her history with the training she had. Or in season 1 she wouldn't blast music in the car in the middle of mission to retrieve munitions, with her training. My biggest pet peeve with the show and movie was how she spit out her background history and interest in a long ramble, her dad would have trained her how to say it more naturally like a normal conversation or interaction.
