Woof! (1989)
Charming story -- good , wholesome, clean entertainment for kids
When I first saw this on cable 10 years ago I wanted to know how I could buy it for my collection. Now in 2006 is it available on DVD! (Also see "Woof Again!") It's from a British TV show and TV movie in the late 80s/early 90s. The story is very simple and wholesome. It's about a preteen ("tween") boy named Eric who turns into a dog and has to figure out why and how it happens, and also how to stop doing it or at least control when it happens. No one would believe his story except his best friend. He gets into challenging situations at the oddest times and he doesn't know how to change back to a boy again. Best of all, I like it because there's no Disney/Warner Bros fluff, no deviant or outlandish behavior, no violence or mature themes, and no unbelievable story plots. Why can't more kid videos be like this?!
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
A very funny, entertaining, and witty movie! Austen fans - please don't worry so much
Director Gurinder Chadha and the cast/crew have a real sense of humor. The script is "inspired" by P&P and many of the plots, subplots and dialog are similar, but modernized. Much of the cast has also been "Indianized" (I don't mean to offend anyone with that term) effectively. It's the story of Lalita (Lizzy) Bakshi, a bright, beautiful and headstrong Indian girl and her encounters with Johnny Wickham and Will Darcy. In this age of global air travel, you will find scenes in India, London and Los Angeles. Of course, in wonderful Bollywood style -- there's lots of dancing, lip-syncing and colorful costumes. Pure eye- and ear-candy! Lots of funny, memorable moments. Pls don't expect a "Bend It Like Beckham" or a classic "Pride & Prejudice" -- B&P is in a league of its own, so take it for what it is. Hilarious and light-hearted. I think if Austen were alive today, she'd probably enjoy it too. I highly recommend this movie!
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Best in Show
This is the best anime I have ever seen. The story is unique and beguiling. The animation is very artfully done. Just a few minutes into the story and you'll forget you're watching an animated movie. You'll get so caught up in the story and cheer for Chihiro until the credits roll. A real feel-good movie for all ages. Vote 10/10!!
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Spellbinding... a modern classic!
10 out of 10! Thanks to BBC and A&E, we have a modern classic in this 1995 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Jane Austen must be prodigiously pleased. For those who know the story by heart, this movie stays true to the book. A truly "intoxicating" film, as actor Colin Firth puts it. He IS Darcy. Even better than Laurence Olivier's rendition in the 1940 film version. Jennifer Ehle is so well cast as Lizzie. It's as if the movie has lept from the pages of Jane Austen's novel and brought it to life. I could not think of a more perfect production -- script, casting, screenplay, scenery, music, costumes, etc. Each time I watch the movie I find another layer of understanding in the plot and the characters. As a perfect accompaniment, you must also read "The Making of Pride & Prejudice".
Pride and Prejudice (1940)
A very charming, Victorian chick-flick.
For those who like Victorian nostalgia, this movie is priceless. Keep in mind that the Hollywood of the 1930s-40s was more into light-hearted, romantic movies, not true-grit authenticity or reality TV. This movie has taken the major plot and characters from Jane Austen's novel, but there are embellishments -- the dialogue is subtle yet witty, the costumes are lavish, and there are big-named stars like Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson. Perfect for a rainy or snowy day, curled up in bed. There is very little testosterone here, so this won't be interesting for guys.
