Doctor Who: Space Babies (2024)
Russell T Davies can't control himself
The chemistry between Ruby and the Doctor was fantastic. They clearly feel off each other as actors and you can just feel the casual connection they have with each other. Gatwa and Gibson physical interaction was the feel of long time friends and shows genuine fun and warmth between the characters. I have a feeling that along with their superb acting will generate a lot of positivity towards this episode. I think after a couple of seasons (since 2 is confirmed with Gatwa) that this will be viewed as one of the weakest episodes.
On to the story, Davies has always had political or social undertones. None of them detracts from the story even though they were clearly complaints/comments. The writing was clearly meant to be juvenile. 6 years olds in onsies. Overall, but the overall poop, smell, and dirty diaper jokes throughout the story is classical low hanging fruit that Davies gets fixated on sometimes. Tarnished a story with a lot of energy and chemistry along with some really funny buts and some scary moments.
Star Trek: Discovery: Whistlespeak (2024)
You knew what was going to happen
When I saw Burnham picked Tilly, I could see the future plot points as they came. Tilly who is literally the only overweight person in Starfleet runs a marathon with severe dehydration check. I will stop here to say Burnham has never lost anything. A race, a fight, shots or Romulan Ale, Dabo...undefeated. So why is Tilly even in the race. She should not be in the race in case Burnham needs her for, idk, fixing a radiation leak or fixing a Denubulan engineering control panel? Nope, let's both have then race and the one person who can beat 1000 Klingon warriors in a Bat'leth contest (her against 1000 Klingons) fix something she needs help with and let the engineer run the race.
When the priest or whoever was running the race told his daughter she promised her mother than he would protect her. Yup sacrifice. It's like they don't even try. Well, it is the last season. So I guess there is no point to try. The biggest slap though was that Raynor, unlike other first officers, did not officially say he was on the record not wanting to break the prime directive, but Raymor? Eff it. I'd rather be in a penal colony then be on this ship with all the low will crew. Aidira, Tilly, one of my favorites Culber is wanting answers for feeling like he is happy and thinking on a higher plane than he used to...what? Abuela help me with mysticism? My engineer husband help me with my brain scan and blood panel? Why is everyone needing emotional support dogs all of a sudden? I wish Reno would come around and kick some asses. This would also be a lot better if Booker came down and not Tilly. If you have to be in a low tech area, he would be my go to wing person. It was like they thought there was another season and maybe a spinoff (there were rumors of SF Academy but didn't want Tilly without a paycheck until then so they shoehorned hee way not only back into this season but into too many stories. Stamets is the chief engineer but he is treated as the second or third engineer on the crew. Makes no sense. Like when Burnham says the crew is a democracy and never asks for anyone's opinion. Hmm.
The Denobulans was overcrowded even by human standards and in about 200 years (Ent to TNG) they had storms that wiped out most of their population? What? You don't have climate change like that. What a bad retconn! Vulcan would make more sense as there they did need to adapt to collect water. I am a competitionist. I hate it but I am a sunk cost fallacy when it comes to shows.
Snake Oil (2023)
They pick the stupidest people
I literally wish I had knew and auditioned for thus show. In 4 episodes I've been wrong zero times. I honestly feel like they picked the stupidest people to display on this. I admit. It saves them money. But take the last show. You have EMERGENCY keys. Not your primary key under a fake item. Yet they portrayed it as your primary key for entry. Why use a gnome to protect you key with a fingerprint scan to GET your key when you could literally for the price ($300) get a lock with fingerprint recognition. Then they had crocs with animal prints and thought who would want that when a billion crocs are sold each year. The fact anyone picks the correct product after 4 shows astounds me. Rent a mule for in your house with a keg and loose plastic cups there. Not even a hygiene issue but they seriously considered it. I like the actors. (FOX) that they add. But even when the actors are like IDK they pick stupid things. I think they honestly pick the dumbest contestants like early American Idol would showcase and sometimes advance ridiculously bad singers.
Tom Swift (2022)
Horrible lead unredeemable
Tom Swift is the like the angry bitter gay who feels the only person fabulous is himself (and other sexy gay men). Everyone else is just not worthy of his affection unless they are sexy and gay as well. Everyone he is positive with in the first two episodes are either gay themselves, his family, or his body guard who has the skills of a thief. Now don't get me wrong, some characters are bad as well, but I have rarely seen a lead character with such unredeeming qualities. I really wanted to give this a chance, but wow, not since Arrow season one have I hated a CW show so much. The entire premise that the bad guys can hack in on his AI, his body guard warning him it might be compromised and dismissing his body guard like it's a stupid suggestion shows not only how bad his personality is but the lazy ass writing to this show. I'm a genius but only I'm right just st makes him look worse. He literally had to be right in EVERY interaction. I support LGBT+ people and rights. So I'm okay with the characters. However, I have to assume the ONLY reason anyone gave this an 8+ is because they are LGBTQ+ advocates. Ignore those idiotic reviews.
Young Rock: Backyard Brawl-B-Q (2022)
Blast from the past
If you grew up in the 80s watching wrestling, this is an exciting and fun episode to watch. The amount of wrestlers and how accurately they are dressed on match day was spot on. Loved it.
Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils (2022)
Literally thought this couldn't get worse
Chibnall sucks. I don't dislike a female Doctor at all. But Chibnall screwed with Doctor Who cannon a lot. The companions were as tepid and the 5th Doctor. (Adric, a stewardess from Heathrow, and a woman who was too logical). So too logical companions with little to no emotions and a human who over reacted to everything. *EXCITING* This is Whitaker's top 5 worse episodes. (Sorry but all of the Master episodes were cringe worthy). I am greatful Chibnall is gone.
Stephen Moffit was the gold standard. I would give my left arm for him to come back. But I will accept Russell T Davies.
The Endgame: All That Glitters (2022)
The stupidity of the agents are getting worse
I am only watching for Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathe who I have liked since Boston Legal. The stupidity of these people knows no bounds. Previous episode had fake high powered lasers that was clearly impossible. This one they are drowning someone with liquid "gold." As if liquid gold wouldn't burn the flesh off of someone instantly. She's not in any pain. Clearly another fake trap. I'm not even to the end and its most likely gold colored paint.
I had a hard time coming back after the last week. Not sure how much longer I'm willing to hang out. The only sunk loss i s my time but I can't stand how obviously stupid these people are.
The Endgame: #1 with a Bullet (2022)
Most unbelievable episode so far
Hated it. The lack of logic to the twists were so bad that I literally don't think I can watch this anymore. It hurts my head how stupidly written this show is. The lasers alone. How were they able to carry in enough gear to make some invisible power source no one can find, and a moving powerful multi-laser apparatus? That was just the tip of the iceberg. So many stupid or bad plot points. I've been loving Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bath. This writing was sloppy at the start is this is the least believable episode yet.
DuckTales: Double-O-Duck in You Only Crash Twice! (2020)
Fantastic episode
The episodes start with Dewey and Launchpad acting as spies. This was all a VR game. Launchpad seemed even more dumb than usual and for the first part this disappointed me. Until the twist and the touching insight from Launchpad were revealed.
Scrooge was there to pick them up up from this arcade. Dewey begs to play once more and Webbigail, as usual, distracts Scrooge and brings him to the classic arcade room.
Meanwhile it's revealed that F.O.W.L actually has has a lair. Steelbeak is also there as her muscle. They are are warned by Director Buzzards them that Scrooge is there and they need to get him out of there.
I'm not sure how Black Heron's plan to have Steelbeak kill Dewey and Launchpad would get him out of there. Then again even the smartest villains make horrible plans. Black Heron is trying to change a smart Ray into a stupid Ray and remove the threat of Scrooge by using the Ray on him. I was delighted to see her use the smart Ray on a mouse who turns out to be Gadget from Chip N Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Steelbeak follows Launchpad and Dewey into the VR game and attacks them there. The two constantly think this is part of the simulation as the VR makes it appear that they are still in the simulation while from Steelbeak's perspective they are fighting thought the arcade. Dewy and Launchpad end up falling in the ball pip, which they fall through until the end up in a glass tube with Steelbeak standing over them. He knocks them unconscious.
Meanwhile,Webbigail convince Scrooge to play skeeball that has a gold prospector tell him he won 100 points and received tickets. Scrooge becomes immediately obsessed. He can't stop playing, falls back into his pile of tickets, does an angel in snow move, and won't let the clerk count them with a deranged look like the clerk will steal his tickets.
Dewey and Launchpad wake in clear cells with air holes. In Launchpad's cell appears some junk among which is a rubber band. He sees in front his cell a board with a button cell release. He picks up a rubber band. After several attempts at trying to shoot the rubber band, he tries to think of another solution. The entire Rescue Rangers enter his cell and rebuilds their iconic airplane. They try to lift off but it won't fly more than a couple inches. Launchpad helps them life off and they fire at the console and open the cell doors. Dewey thinks that launchpad created the ship and taught mice to fly it when he says he did.
Black Heron is testing the ray ray on two henchmen who are changed from being able to figure a Rubik's cube to chewing on them like a baby with a teether. Steelbeak returns and Black Heron found out he captured Dewey and Launchpad, and was upset he didn't eliminate them as she said. Steelbeak and Black Heron head to the cells when Black Heron calls him stupid one time too many and shoot her with the Ray. He decides to take charge now. He runs into the escaping Dewey and Launchpad. During the fight he loses the gun and it switches back to smart. He fires at Dewey and Launchpad leaps in front of him. Dewey thinks he lost his last life and is carried away by Steelbeak.
Launchpad wakes up and the spy version of him says he will take over in his mind before he wakes up. He then finds quickly finds F.O.W.L. is behind this and where Dewey was. He decides to save Dewey. Steelbeak is in a speed boat and Launchpad gives chase in another. Dewey still believes this is the VR. Launchpad tries to warm him but the water drowns Launchpad out. Eventually, Launchpad crashes and with makeshift skis and grappler he is able to ski behind Steelbeak's boat. Steelbeak cuts the line and we are seeing him head to the last base he mentioned earlier, a sat-lighthouse.
Stealbeak activates the satellite transmitter at the top of the lighthouse and puts the ray gun into. Launchpad swims underwater and confronts him as he is preparing to fire. They fight and as Launchpad thinks he will lose, the Rescue Rangers fly in with theme music in the background and knocks Steelbeak off the satellite into the bay. They fly off as Launchpad thanks them for the rescue.
Launchpad tries to stop the satellite but couldn't so he thinks only sacrificing his new smarts can he save the city of Duckburg. But he hesitates upset of what he will lose. Dewey asks him why is overthinking this and Launchpad responds that he wants to be good enough for Dewey. He responds that he is good enough for him. He was Dewey's best friend. With that Launchpad sacrifices himself. As he falls towards the pay, Dewey leaps after him and hugs him as they fall.
The wake up in front of the VR game. The spy part of tells him to earn Scrooge about F.O.W.L. which comes out as I like purple. In Director Buzzards office he is chewing out Black Heron and Steelbeak. He says what did I say? No intelligence Ray's, no freeze Ray's, no Ray's!
My favorite parts were the Rescue Rangers cameos, smart Launchpad and the insecurity he felt though out the story like telling Dewey to try the VR again on his own. While the Scrooge addiction was by far the worst part, the scenes were very brief.
Broke (2020)
Some seriously stuck up reviewers here
Look it's not great, and like all the 1 and 2 stars the canned laughter is as off-putting as it has been for years. The acting is not horrible. In fact, Luis has fantastic timing. His time in telanovelas clearly show that here. Uncle Javier's character is by far the deepest and most satisfying in the first episode.
The bickering and fighting between the sisters including the eventual throwing things at each other like little children. Yeah, by far the worst part of the episode. Unfortunately, since many reviewers didn't even watch past the halfway point, you don't see how they resolve their differences and hopefully stop after this episode. In fact, if you took out the sister's shading each other and eventual fighting, it was a decent maybe even good episode.
While I agree that the canned laugh track really needs to be put to bed, I can also see that after this 'pilot' setting up the background that it could improve and succeed. I will give it more time.
