The Final Destination (2009)
Just a whole bunch of random death
One spoiler for The Final Destination, and a couple for the other movies in the series.
The thing that bothered me most about this was that they didn't focus on the plot so much as showing the most horrible and disgusting ways a person could die. I feel like this film is going to discourage people from watching the other three movies, which were all much better than The Final Destination. The CGI was horrible, which I guess the 3D was supposed to make up for, but I didn't see it in theaters.
You didn't know anything about the characters, and the previous events from the other three movies were mentioned only once. They seemed to think that they had the same thing happening to them, but there was no other references, no specific order. The whole movie was just a bunch of death.
In the first movie, Final Destination, the survivors died in the order they would've died on the plane. In Final Destination 2, Death was "tying up all the loose ends" so they died in the opposite order than they would've died in the pile up. In Final Destination 3, they died in the order they would've on the roller coaster, but there were also clues in the photos taken.
In all of these movies, they made the connection to the previous events. In all of these movies, they thought it was over. In Final Destination, they thought it was over because all of the people had either died or been saved. In FD2, they thought it was over because the girl died and came back. In FD3, they thought it was over because of the same thing in the first movie. In The Final Destination, they just randomly thought it was over, no reason why or anything. They hadn't taken any time to do much research into the previous events, so there was no reason they should think it was over.
Yes, the movie took a whole different view on the Final Destination series, but the characters had no personality, you barely knew their names, and I could go on and on about how horribly different he whole thing was. It wasn't even the same concept anymore. Just a whole bunch of random deaths presented in the most gory way possible.
In the other movies, there was some kind of sequence of events that led to the deaths. In this one, things just randomly happened. I'm still wondering how exactly that whole car wash scene went down. They mostly seemed to want to make it as gory as possible, rather than giving it some kind of substance and plot.
Mothman (2010)
Better than The Mothman Prophecies, in my opinion
First off, there's not really any spoilers here. I'm not going to describe any scenes or tell you the ending or any such thing like that.
To me, The Mothman Prophecies was extremely drawn out and rather boring. I will admit to watching the crap movies shown on SyFy and occasionally enjoying them, so maybe that just shows I have bad taste. Whatever your opinion on other SyFy channel 'originals' may be, don't use that to judge this one.
I liked the different take on the Mothman theory. If I remember correctly, there was no Indian legend or anything like that mentioned in The Mothman Prophecies. I liked that you actually saw more than just a whole bunch of drawings of the creature. I liked that it was more of a horror movie than a mystery sort of thing, because I for one love horror movies, no matter how horrible they are. It had a reasonable amount of gore, but not to the point where it was sickening.
I liked that the Mothman had a motive for killing them off and it wasn't just some kind of monster going on a rampage. They all had taken part in the murder of that boy at the beginning of the movie so there was a justified reason there, in my opinion, even if it was a bit of an accident. I thought that the movie wasn't exactly predictable like most horror movies these days, but I know there were a lot of things I didn't see coming.
The acting wasn't as bad as the usual SyFy movie actors, and I thought the script wasn't too horribly cheesy or anything either. The characters were okay. They were the only drawback I saw in this movie. If you can ignore the fact that you know next to nothing about any of them, then you can enjoy the movie.
Agree with me or not, I thought Mothman was a good movie and definitely worth the watch.
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
A waste of time
Okay, so all I have to say is that it was interesting enough to keep me watching, but I'll watch anything if I'm really that bored. And trust me, I was really bored.
I watched the unrated version on DVD and just... I wish I had never even looked at the cover of that movie. It was the worst thing I ever saw and I really did not need to see a woman kill her cat and then a man spit the cat's dead body out of his mouth or a dead woman's eyeballs fly from their sockets and into another girl's mouth. Just, no. It felt like they were just trying to make the movie as horribly disgusting as possible. I mean, I enjoy horror and I find movies like Saw fascinating, but this was just horrible. It was predictable, the characters were almost totally flat and you wouldn't care if the heroine was dragged to hell or any other place.
I wanted to puke while watching this movie several times. And that's a rare occurrence for me. So take this as a warning and don't watch this movie. EVER.
