The Perfect Host (2010)
A modern day version of Sleuth
Two men with a common interest in the proceeds from a bank robbery are brought together in this dark thriller. The problem is that the men are competing with each other and use both power and "zingers" to shift the advantage from one to the other.
In many ways, the competing Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Piece) and John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) in the Perfect Host weave a story that, in many ways, looks like the competition between Andrew Wyke (Laurence Olivier) and Milo Tindle (Michael Caine)in the original Sleuth. The execution and details are not done quite as well as Sleuth/Joseph Mankiewicz - but director Tomnay does do a very effective job in surprising and disturbing the viewer with strange twists and turns.
Helen Reddy (yes the singer from 20 years ago) has a effective role in the "cat and mouse" antics.
Think this is Nick Tomnay's first-time role directing a feature film. He has done a good job on this and, for film devotees, its well worth the journey.
