7 Angels in Eden (2007)
I want my hour and a half back!
A friend of mine rented this thinking it might be a good movie for a low budget laugh. All I can say after watching it is Euugghh. The only reason i saw it all was for the train wreck effect. I just couldn't look away.
I've seen beginner student films with more storyline than this... I hesitate to even call it a horror film. It wasn't scary, it wasn't interesting, it wasn't much of anything. It wasn't even bad enough to laugh at. The script was SO bad, the effects were the worst I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of bad indie horror films.
The lead guy was not believable at all. Seemed like his only motivation was just in it to kiss a few pretty girls. Makes for a pretty shallow character in my book. I just saw on here that he's also the writer/ director. This must be how he tries to pick up girls... by casting them.
The female lead, Mia was a good actress and the evil angel girl was pretty decent too. They were the only thing that kept me watching this stinking pile. These were also the girls Mr Lead guy was out to kiss. I wonder if these girls were on to this guys game.
Anyway, long story short... Don't rent this film unless you're wanting to tie someone up and torture them!
Lady in the Water (2006)
Review of the movie
I saw Lady in the Water tonight and I quite enjoyed it. M. Night Shyamalan's movies are pretty much hit or miss with me, so I was glad this one touched me the way it has. It was nice to be able to see a movie in modern times that was not a constant, in your face every second type thriller. Instead, the story unfolds in layers, forcing you to think instead of having everything handed to you like most films these days. The film was more of a journey of a lost soul trying to find himself rather than just another horror film. Sure, there were some moments that the entire audience jumped, but as I said before, this movie has many layers. It was also nice to see a film with regular looking people and not Hollywood glam. Bryce Dallas Howard is an attractive woman in real life, but in this movie she looked more plain than I have ever seen her. Paul Giamatti was slouchy looking and had a bad stutter. All the neighbors in this film were just regular looking people making the movie easier to relate to. I give this film an 8 out of 10, which is very fair I think. This is a movie that I would see again, but not so great that I'd call it one of my favorite movies. It's definitely worth the money. Especially if you typically like M. Night Shyamalan films.
Barbershop (2002)
Barbershop- the country club of the ghetto
Sometimes the right haircut can change the way a man feels about himself on the inside. That was the message of this movie. Several different people from different walks of life all came together to bring life and diversity to this little barbershop in the South side of Chicago.
Ice Cube plays Calvin Palmer, the 3rd generation in his family to own and operate the barbershop where everyone in town seems to come to hang out and discuss the issues of the world. Calvin begins his journey believing that he could be something better than a barber in the ghetto. It took almost losing the shop for him to realize how much it meant to not only him, but to everyone in the neighborhood. This barbershop not only helps to give everyone a first cut haircut for a job interview, but the shop gave second chances to people who might otherwise be jobless and forced into a life of crime. All the characters in this film are easy to relate to. Calvin (Ice Cube) and his wife Jennifer (Jazsmin Lewis) make us see that no matter how different of a world we come from, loving relationships are basically the same. Jimmy James (Sean Patrick Thomas) works so hard to feel that he's better off than he really is that he has to resort to putting down others to make himself feel better, but learns that it's better to just be who you are. That lesson was taught to him by someone he once looked down on, new barber, Troy Garity (Isaac Rosenberg.) Terri Jones (Eve) Just wants to be respected, loved and hands off the girls apple juice! Ricky Nash (Michael Ealy) is just looking for his chance to start over and go legit from his past life of crime. Eddie, the senior barber had been there since the 60's and had some wonderful insightful speeches that made you think. Sure, sometimes he'd just ramble about nothing but sometimes the man would have things that would make everyone in the room just stop, listen and think.
This movie was my feel good movie of the year. I cared for these people. I wanted to hang in Calvin Jr.'s barbershop for the day. I wanted to get a haircut and know what was going on in the world through this little shop.
