Sucker Punch (2011)
It's better to watch plants as they grow
Once I saw a movie that has a lot of action, comedy moments, intrigue, suspense, and finally made me cry. Cinematography was great, the acting was superb, it was ingenious, clever and finally I thought, if there's a movie that deserves a 10, this one is.
Well, exactly the opposite happened to me while watching this movie. I felt, a) bored, since the story goes nowhere, if there is any story at all. b) claustrophobia, since there are not a single take filmed on any actual location, everything is computer-generated. Cyberpunk genre going wrong. c) depressed, what the heck do people who liked this movie have on their heads? and started to think that the human race is inevitably going to be destroyed in a very stupid way... with overproduced and ridiculously unreal FX. d) In Spanish, we have a concept called "vergüenza ajena", it's when you feel embarrassed for what someone else did, or does. Well, this was my feeling, I felt so sorry for the guy who did this movie, I think he surely put an effort to do this, and to get what? a candidate to "worst movie ever"? poor guy, he might be so depressed. Or possibly, Zack Snyder is a villain who wants to take revenge on humanity by doing unwatchable movies, and his point was to actually do a horrible movie.
There's no point at all on trying to find any sense on the girl blowing up Nazis while riding a mecha, or fighting with characters taken from Mortal Kombat, although those were the better parts of the movie. The mustache whorehouse owner character is lame, mono-dimensional and retarded. The scene where the girl dies, and tells the other girl "tell mom that I love her" was, for me, the bottom. A always repeating clichè, trying to ineffectively put some drama in a story where there's no place for drama at all.
And just to end it, the cherry upon the pie, everything was a dream, or something, but nothing of what you spent two irrecoverable hours of your life was real. Just horrible.
I'm starting to think that this Mr. Snyder is going to be the next Shyamalan, worst director ever. I mean, he directed 300, what would you expect?! Spend some time with your family, read a book, learn to cook something, or watch the plants growing, but for god's sake, do NOT watch this movie under any circumstances; except if you are a masochist, and want to have one of the worst cinematic experiences of your life.
Whatever Works (2009)
the feelgood movie in the year, Larry David said so..
OK, first, the usual apologies for my lack of eloquence in the English language, although I'm getting' better.
I have been absolutely unlucky of watching "You will meet a tall dark stranger", I've totally lost my faith. After watching this one, having knowledge that the next Allen's movie is that lame, it's like beginning to read a book knowing the end, and the end of the book is horrible.
So, let's focus on this movie. I've never seen anybody dealing with existentialism in such a light way, and being funny at the same time; yes, it's simple, but what's wrong with simple? The plot isn't convincing at all, but it's a Woody Allen movie, for Christ's sake, you can't expect anything else. Probably in some years this movie will not be remembered at all; but it definitively worth spending hour and a half on it. You'll fell great and, at least for me, it totally made my day. Funny, and consistent with all the existentialism, the movie is not transcendental at all. Or maybe this movie is plain dull and stupid and I'm going through some kind of contrast thing, but after watching "You will meet a tall dark stranger" anything will look great.
El rati horror show (2010)
The most harmful form of stupidity.
excuse the bad English, pls!
Reading a bit about this documentary I found a synopsis of it, written for the screening on the BAFICI (Buenos Aires Festival International de Cine Independietne), that ends with a phrase that roughly translates to English as "corruption is the most harmful form of stupidity".
Enrique Piñeyro, often referred as the "Argentinian Michael Moore", did a documentary on a doubtful case of a shooting a the "bonaerense" neighborhood of Nueva Pompeya. Some cops (dressed as civilians) shot (and almost killed) an innocent man, who is now in jail accused on charges of robbery, and homicide of three people. Piñeyro works on the "irregularities" of the case; the lack of convincing evidence, lack of witnesses, etc, in an (great) effort to throw some light in a very difficult case of police corruption/brutality. Some time ago I read, here in IMDb, a review of a guy complaining on a documentary done with an "political agenda" (which means nothing less than a director trying to prove something), and I thought, a documentary is like a thesis, you begin with an hypothesis, you do some research, and then, you use the research you have done to prove (or not) your initial hypothesis, that's the way this documentary is done. A lot of resources (backstage, special effects, recreation, etc), the unbreakable conviction of pursuing justice of the author, and his particular mix of humor and cynicism makes this one into a great, interesting, and very well executed documentary.
I sincerely recommend you; try to watch this movie. You will not regret. Thanks, I hope I'd been helpful!
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Works better if you have seen "Bowling For Columbine"
First of all, this is my first review, and I don't speak English very well, so...
Well, I like most of what Moore has done, and I think that this is not the better of him, and it doesn't deserve to won the Palme D'Or at all. But I still think that this one deserves to be watched. Moore is using here most of what he did explain (greatly) on "Bowling for Columbine". There he explain how assimilated is violence in the nowadays unitedstatian (I will not say American since America is a continent and not a country) society. Fahrenheit 9/11 works a lot with this, and how normal is for the unitedstatians to invade a country in the name of the freedom values, democracy values, and so on, which are actually the economic interests of a small private group that has no ethic and just want to take profits, like it happen on Vietnam, Chile, Afghanistan, Iraq, and many many others. I disagree with Moore in this movie, 'cause he's attributing most of this to the ineptitude of Bush, and this is not like that. A man as intelligent as Moore is, should have realized that the 9/11 attacks were done deliberately, or at least allowed, by Bush Government, in order to be able to invade countries and to steal their resources, just like the us always have done. So, Moore is putting first his political disagreement with Bush's party, instead of truth. I don't like that. If Moore were had been right about this, Obama's government would be a lot better, and it's actually worst than Bush's administration. Despite that, i liked this documentary, and there's a very funny scene of the movie, that pictures a retired old man, and how he is denounced by his partners for not being agree with the government, that, my friends, reflects how us citizens are living in a fascist regime, not barely close to a democratic nation.
