Thumbelina (1994)
Not bad...
You know what? I liked this movie. Its kinda of slow in parts, and the animation is dated too, but the songs really stick. You know how I know? My kids, 7 and 12 years old, will watch this movie over and over when we break it out of our DVD rack. They sing the cheery Manilow penned songs and they watch the story unfold each time like its the first time. (The being slow part can be bridged with a cookie or two)...
I like the voice of Thumbalina. She did the voice to the Little Mermaid, so you can consider this a sequal..sorta...song to listen for? A cute little balad called "Soon"...one of those 'bring a tear to your eye' songs...
I give this a 7+...instantly forgetable for adults...kids will love it though!!!
Star Trek: Generations (1994)
Better than I thought
I am a Star Trek fan...(DS9 was the best...)
Generations is pretty much dissed by Trek fans, but who cares. I like this movie. And you know why? Shatner. I'm not sure how he did it but he steals the show from Patrick Stewart. Nothing against Mr. Stewart, but in this movie he is just simply...boring. Shatner brings a child like sense of adventure to Kirk that no other Trek-character can match.
I like the 'meeting' of the two great Captains. Shatner gives him a kick in the butt by saying "as long as you're in that chair you can make a difference". I like that.
Klingons, Data and a great job by Malcom Mcdowell really make this a fun and 'deep' movie, when compared to the action of First Contact and the boring offerings of Insurrection and the very dreadful Nemesis...
I give Generations a 9 on a Trek scale..and a 8 on a general movie scale...
From the Hip (1987)
John Hurt makes this movie...
I still see Judd Nelson in high-school on detention. It wasnt made long after BREAKFAST CLUB, but this movie is pretty good. The first half is a comedy, but the second half is a very serious murder trial with a great performance from John Hurt. I can't help but think that Anthony Hopkins watched this movie and got his HANNIBAL characteristics from Hurt's sophisticated performance here....
I give this movie an 8 just for Hurt's performance alone. The rest of the movie would garner a 6+ for its 'low budget' supporting cast. Though, Nelson is charming...
Somewhere in Time (1980)
Romance...tears...what a combo
Before "Ghost" there was this low budget romantic scifi movie that is, without a doubt, one of the greatest chic-flicks of all time.
Chris Reeve travels back in time and falls in love with a very pretty Jane Seymore. Its all mush, but mush of the best kind. I am a romantic at heart and whenever I see this movie..well...I get that little tear in my left eye.
This movie is far from Oscar material, but if you want to get lost in the 1920s and watch love transend all time and space..then..THEN..this one is for you!!! This movie would make Barry Manilow cry!!!...
Kaijû sôshingeki (1968)
Fast Forward!!!
You know what? This movie is considered one of the best Godzilla productions, and I always thought it was, but....its kind of boring. My friend and I watched it and we kept nodding off. Not enough monster action and tooooooooo much talking log this one down. Fast forward to the fight at the end for best results.
I give this movie a....5 on a general movie scale...and a 7+ on a Godzilla scale...
