Severance (2022)
Masterpiece so far
This is one of the best shows I've ever seen.
The tone, the casting, the originality of the story, the way it slowly builds nearing complete collapse around half way of pure wtf only to bring you back round into such a climactic last episode. Truly, a masterpiece. Where they will go with season 2 I don't know but if the quality stays the same then this will go down in the history books.
More of this please.
Just wow. Apple came out swinging with this!
Just to use up my last few letters, please if you like black comedy, shows like black mirror, even the intrigue of lost, I implore you to see this through to the end.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Epilogue
A nice Epilogue closing out Jesse's story, better on the second watch a few years later when I knew what to expect but was hazy on the details. Classy, not OTT.
More of breaking bad, as if that's a bad thing? Not sure what people where expecting, it's a breaking bad foot note! I enjoyed this more that Better call Saul which was very drawn out and was all together something different.
I'm glad they did this separately from the climax of BB as it would have meant for a less impactful ending.
Again Vince has pulled off a master class in tone, timing and satisfying closure. Jesse deserved it poor guy.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Bad
This is a terrible film. A parody at best, it reduces Thor to a clueless bafoon, whilst focusing on girl power moments and cheesy jokes.
The screaming goat videos that went around the internet years ago get a call back repeatedly in on of the poorest choices I've seen in years. Eye rolls and cringe all round.
The opening scene with Bale was great but by the time Thor stops two vehicles by doing the splits between them you know respect for the audience and their wishes for a decent film is out the window.
Story line is thin, like a tv show episode. Bale is wasted.
Oh and apparently anybody can now become a 'Thor'
Gutted.
Verdens verste menneske (2021)
About nothing
The film follows the lead actor through a few years of her life where not much happens. This film is pretty mundane, she's a bit of an arsehole who can't make a decision about what she wants. She has a grass is always greener attitude and her relationships suffer because of it. She also can't handle her drugs. I was expect something more from this film, but alas it wasn't to be. Meh.
Ozark: A Hard Way to Go (2022)
It didn't end.
If there was more after this episode then it would be rated as well as the more mediocre episodes but nothing was resolved, I had to actually double check this was then end after as it feels like there will be another season based off this 'ending'
No closure just a few dead characters, a change of power and a cliffhanger to end the show is a rip off.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
This film sucks
It was all a dream basically. A dream of a life never lived, an opportunity missed and the consequential dreamed reality of what if.
Nah mate. Stick that.
I like weird, complex films, can deal with pretentiousness but this was a cheap nothing dressed as artsy deepness. I would like a refund in my Thursday evening wasted please.
I do however like the cast so have a couple of stars.
Trigger Point (2022)
Ignore Ep 1 bad reviews, Getting good at Ep 3
All the reviews after episode 1 are silly. The first episode was passable, just setting things up. Ep 2 was more set up and now Ep 3 we are heating up. I'm very interested in the direction it's going in, definitely will be tuning in for more.
Little Joe (2019)
Subtle invasion
I've not seen invasion of the body snatchers, but I know the concept from other similar films. I guess this is one of those kind of films but done in a more subtle British indie cinema style. There is a nice paranoid feel to the story, which you never can make you mind up in until the film plays out fully. There is no dumbing down, obvious reveal, even that is done subtly.
Would recommend to a friend.
Side note - the younger actors are quite wooden unfortunately, I found that a little irritating.
Dune (2021)
Multiple viewings required
I found when I first saw this at the cinema my expectations were so high after waiting so long for it, it couldn't help but fail. On second watch once I knew what I was getting I enjoyed it way more, I think once the second part is released it will be a great film to watch as a complete piece, this film being all set up.
Roll on part 2.
Dark (2017)
Season 1&2 AMAZING
Seasons 1&2 were unbelievably good, I was so hyped for the third season. Then it came and took a crap on what had gone before.
There weren't any plot holes but it got really OTT and then the ending erases everything and its a 'this could have happened if this event took place, but it didn't so forget everything you just watched'
Equal only to the it was all a dream type of ending.
What a rip off.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Love this film
I love this film, it has the correct balance of all the ingredients. For the people saying this is better than Endgame, I suppose so, but I look at it as a Kill Bill type situation. They are parts one and two of the same film and as such should be viewed as a whole. Infinity war has so much bang for your buck that Endgame if compared it way flatter, but really they are Cause and effect, setup and resolution.
Brilliant, vibrant, funny, highly entertaining and unpredictable stuff.
Beckett (2021)
Nice
I enjoyed it, standard chase & conspiracy affair. Not sure what the beef with it is.
South Park (1997)
When it lands.
When South park lands, it's untouchable. The only issues I find from time to time are
1 some of the story line references are so America current affairs centric they can get lost in overseas (England here) audiences.
2 as with all shows that have gone on so long it's quite different from how it was when in its prime. (S4-S12)
Once the seasons became serialised it became a bit boring. Don't get me wrong it's still great, it doesn't work as well.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Much better than the original cut but.....
Too much slow motion & a few parts that got to the point of being way overly dramatic and drawn out.
Overall though, this is a great film.
I felt the stakes way more in this version than the the theatrical cut, I really felt the threat level. Each team member feels more valid & I really did notice for once how out of place and human Batman is compared to the meta humans. Very much the team coach/manager than the MVP but I really liked that.
I would definitely like to see more of this super dark DCEU.
The Twilight Zone (2019)
Enjoyed all of it.
I am almost done with season two and I have to say I enjoy the lot. Some where weaker than others but as a whole the anthology of weird tales really captures that strange short stories book feel well.
I will note that I have never see the old twilight zone so I don't know what the differences are and I believe that is what people are not vibing the new one so much. I almost didn't watch the new one simply based on the fact that it got panned.
Give it a try but maybe keep it separate from the old version.
Tenet (2020)
Good film
This was a good film, once I understood the concept of the inversion then it's quite a straight forward (excuse the pun) affair.
Purposeful confusion at the beginning echoing our protagonists own bewilderment, then as he finds out what is going on it falls into place just after for the audience.
I have a feeling my rating will increase on second viewing.
Update-
Third viewing and I am now very satisfied with the film. The one thing I would change is the cringe line by Kat 'Even my son?'
Knives Out (2019)
Thoroughly enjoyable
A fun, enjoyable ride. Satisfying cinema.
Daniel Craig is great, nice to see a bit of range from Bond.
I fully recommend this for a good old fashioned Movie, pizza and popcorn night.
United Nation Three Decades of Drum & Bass (2020)
One nation documentary
This is good doc, really enjoyed it. Gave me the itch to go rave.
However it's not a DNB doc but a One Nation doc, with some anecdotal chat about other aspects of the scene.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Nah man
Did not work.
I like Pete Davison, but he is not a leading man.
The character in this and his friends are all idiots which I guess is the point but there is no redemption. Just as the resolution was coming due the film ended.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
The last section of the film
I hate this film.
It starts of great, the middle is pretty good although slows down.
Then the final 3rd of the film they get bored and kill off the main character off screen and you get little closure on the story, all while being gob smacked at the pretentiousness of closing the film with two drivel filled Tommy lee waffles. One with some guy who lives in a shed somewhere with loads of cat and one with his wife maybe. By then I'd got up in disgust at the waste of my time.
I get the idea of the last part being what Tommy Lee's character see's and it's his closure on the chase, but no mate, finish your film properly.
OVERRATED, STUCK UP, GARBAGE
The Coen brothers are the most over rated directors I've taken the time to indulge.
Normal People (2020)
Frustrating.
This is a show about two children/YA who have a serious adult attraction/bond but are too stupid to ever actually just have a conversation about how they need each other and can offer each other support. They ruin what could have been because they are both too presumptuous/naive to discuss the reality of their situation.
Breaking up with your true love because you are going to be apart for 6 weeks and are obviously going to need to sleep with out her people is pathetic and childish.
I didn't mind the show but I was saying come on every episode.
The Outsider (2020)
SLOWEST SHOW EVER
Really enjoyed the first few episodes but it dragged to a ridiculous degree. Should have been 2-3 episodes shorter at least.
The ending was so flat compared to the build up, it just wasn't worth the effort.
Broad City (2014)
Good show with a problematic character
This started out as a good show and continued to be an alright show. I like the concept, it's pretty light and entertaining. Abbi was consistently good.
However Ilana's character becomes too much in the third season with the hardcore Instagram feminist et all attitude to the point where if in the wrong mood it's unwatchable. Over the top to the point of cringe. I know a few people who jumped ship at this point.
She is a little more toned down in the fourth if I remember correctly, which made it easier to watch.
I am about to watch the last season so hopefully it will finish well.
Edit-
Ok so having Finished the last season and then rewatched the rest, it is one season that is a little grating but the rest is solid. (Bar the Shania Twain cameo, the very definition of cringe!)
Rick and Morty: Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty (2019)
Good Ep
This is one of the only two decent episodes this season so far, 2&3 I almost turned off before they finished. 1 is good 5 was ok but felt unfinished
The Irishman (2019)
Old people getting older
This is the story of a man who is supposedly young at the beginning of the film to when he's an old man. Robert de Nero, 75 plays him at all ages. He never looks younger than around 45 this is very distracting, to the point where is broke the vibe of the film. He walks like an old man and the scene at the butchers is laughable!
The editing is far from flawless and the story delivery is very confusing at times.
The film is long, like super long, not particularly original and overall probably the worst Scorsese film I've seen.
