Ford v Ferrari (2019)
An enjoyable movie for all audiences with great storytelling
This movie is really enjoyable regardless if you are a petrolhead or not. The pacing of the movie is good, the story telling is done right and the dialogues are well written. Despite the fact that it is a bit long at 2.5 hours you don't get tired or bored as time literally flies by. In addition, the cast is amazing and I am not referring only to the star names, Matt Damon and Christian Bale, but also to the lesser known Tracy Letts and Josh Lucas. Especially Josh Lucas nails it here, something he hasn't done in my opinion after Beautiful Mind so many years ago. To be honest, and I might sound like an heretic here, I found Christian's Bale performance good but a bit over the top, but maybe that's just me. All in all a really good movie.
Green Book (2018)
Good Humor, great performances and realistic depiction of racism
This movie was a refreshing surprise for me as it was really enjoyable despite having a rather predictable plot. The chemistry between the duo is great and the humor aspect is always there, subtle but good. In addition, the depiction of the US 60's is always interesting. Now let's move to the topic of racism. Growing up in the 90s I watched a lot of good movies that, nevertheless, exploited the topic of racism by unrealistic and over-the-top depictions of it. This movie is one of the rare exceptions where racism is depicted in a more realistic manner which for me also makes its effect stronger. In fact the stronger depiction of racism in this movie in my view didn't even include a single hint of violence, physical or verbal, which was quite astonishing.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Surprisingly good!
I consider myself to be one of the biggest spiderman fans, at least as far as animated series go. Apart from the first trilogy of spiderman movie I wasn't a big fan of the rest. However, given it's super high rating I decided to give this a try. And to my surprise it was really good! The pace was a bit slow in the beggining and I thought it would be a meh movie with inflated ratings but then it all came together. The humor, the animation, the coolness, the emotions they all bonded nicely together and for a long time I couldn't wait to see what will happen next. The only thing missing from this movie was an interesting villain.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
Enjoyable but not one of the best movies of all time for sure
Usually when I decide to watch old films is a hit or miss regardless of their high ratings. Some old films like Harakiri stand the test of time and are brilliant to this day, others like Apocalypse Now are super borefests. Funnily enough, the god the bad and the ugly is neither. It is a rather enjoyable movie that starts strong and introduces the three main characters nicely. The pace is fine although I find some of the subplots a bit unnecessary making the movie too long. Clint Eastwood is born for this role but the other two are also interesting characters in their own ways. All in all, it is a rather enjoyable movie to kill some time but it definitely doesn't belong in the top 250 movies even accounting for its legacy.
Seppuku (1962)
Stands the test of time!!
Watching super old movies is a big risk and hit-or-miss for me regardless of how high their rating is. There are generally three possible outcomes:
1) The movie is still enjoyable to this day and deserves it is rating
2) I find the movie a bit overrated and slow but can understand that was a masterpiece for its era
3) the movie is a complete and utter disappointment overhyped by older audiences most likely (the seventh seal, apocalypse now fall into this category)
Fortunately, Harakiri belongs to the first category. The pace is a bit slow and parts of the plot predictable, which is typical for older movies, but not to the point to make the movie boring. The dialogue is very smart, and the movie very well directed as well. The climax towards the end is also amazing and something to remember. Overall, a movie that stands the test of time.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Didn't age well..
There are old movies that stand the test of time and are really enjoyable to this day, like Harakiri. Unfortunately, this is definitely not the case with Apocalypse Now, which for me is the most overrated movie of all time if I compare the imdb and my honest rating. The plot is moving super slowly, many scenes are long and unnecessary, you learn nothing about the Vietnam war and if the point was to show the horror of war god damn there are ton of movies that do it better and evoke much stronger feelings to the viewer. The only interesting part in this movie was to see Martin Sheen perform in what is supposed to be his best acting movie but that alone couldn't save this absolute borefest, although I have to admit he did a good job. It might be a blasphemy to some people but I actually enjoyed the ''The Island of Dr. Moreau'' better than this movie.
United 93 (2006)
So much wasted potential
I just found this movie after searching for quite some time (like always) for something to watch. I immediately got intrigued by the plot (thriller situation in a plane, heroic true story) and I was sure I found a good catch. Unfortunately, this movie was quite boring, especially the first part. Honestly it could not be worse with such base material and story to work with. I still gave it a 6/10 and it is watchable to an extend but this could have been Oscar-material with better directing and story development. The first half of the movie is completely meaningless and tiring and by the time the second part starts you have no real emotional connection to the passengers of flight 93 or the situation. Surely, for Americans this movie hits some sensitive spots, and hence the big difference in the scores (8.1 for Americans, 7.4 for the rest of the world at the time i write), but whether you are American or not if you want a good thriller or drama there a lot more better ones.
The Omen (1976)
Predictable and slow-paced
I suppose that for its time maybe it was a better movie, but I have to admit that by today's standards this movie is below average. You could tell what was going to happen from the very start to the end, it was not scary at all and the performances besides Gregory Peck's were not anything special. It did contain one or two creepy scenes just for you not to fall asleep. In my opinion, it is nowhere near the level of originality and creepeness of the exorcist. Who doesn't remember the intro music of that old gem without getting the chills? Overall, I think that the 7.6 is very generous if we consider that some of the best horror movies of 90s and 00s do no even get past 6.
Colonia (2015)
Could have been Oscar-Material
I have to admit that this movie was a pleasant surprise and I am quite surprised it has not got much attention and a rating close to 7. The plot is very interesting, partially based on true events and good cast. Emma Stone performance is astonishing by the way. In addition, it makes a lot of people, who have not heard before about it, aware of the story of Colonia Dignidad. And what a story.. For all that I think the movie deserves an 8 and I need to say that I rarely rate movies beyond their IMDb rating. Now, why this movie is not Oscar-material or a 9-10 rated one? In my opinion, for two reasons. Firstly, it contains some plot holes and it is unrealistic at various points. I am not really obsessed with historical accuracy, but at some point the movie defies common logic (or at least mine). Secondly, it lacks a good soundtrack. Every good drama must be accompanied with nice emotional music and here that is not the case. Have you ever wondered how good would be Titanic without its OST?
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
A bit boring
I was quite excited when I discovered this movie expecting something different, a bit of a strange "acquired taste" movie.. Well maybe indeed this movie is unique but not my taste for sure. It was very slow-pacing, characters lack depth and plot seemed meaningless. It wasn't horror and it wasn't romance, and it wasn't thought provoking. Personally, I found it a waste of two hours. It had some nice atmosphere and music but those two can't save a movie alone. I also have to admit that Tilda Swinton was exceptional in her role. She looked charming even as a pale old vampire. All in all, if you want to watch a different kind of vampire movie you can try this one, although I think there are way better ones.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
A pleasant surprise
When I saw all the negative reviews about this sequel, I thought that it would be yet another one trying to earn some easy bucks capitalising on the success of the original. However, that was not the case at least for me. It has the same nice atmosphere and effects as the first one and new interesting and unpredictable stories. Sure it is not as original as the first one (that would be an extremely difficult task to begin with) and maybe that is the only reason I put an 8 instead of a 9. However, if you enjoyed the first one you probably will enjoy this one as well. The new additions to the cast manage to fill the gaps of their predecessors quite well. I would advise anyone who wishes to watch this movie not to get overly influenced by ratings or how good was the first one and enjoy this sequel for what it is. A nice addition to the first one, like an extension of the concept. I would gladly watch and wait for sin city 3 if it is like this one. Cheers.
Dead Calm (1989)
Excellent for spending two hours enjoyably
This movie makes me wonder on how movies should be rated.. In terms of achieving its goal of being an intense, enjoyable thriller I have to admit that his movie gets 10/10. However, I can not really give it a 10/10 without being unfair to great deeper movies like "A beautiful mind","American History X" and so on. Anyways, sorry for the general wondering and let me get back to the point. The plot is nice and fast-moving, as it should be for a thriller, and it definitely has strong moments. In addition, the cast is literally fantastic. Sam Neil is a master when it comes to horror/thriller movies, Billy Zane also performs really well and the same goes for a young Nicole Kidman. Some of the effects looked a bit cheap but today's standards but it is not a special effect based movie anyways.
Little Women (1994)
Was the book really that good?
I haven't read the original book, but based on the movie it is hard for me to understand why it was so famous. Not having read it though, I will give it the benefit of the doubt. Regarding the movie now, the cast is amazing, I like 90's movies feel and directing and it was interesting to see young Christian Bale, Wynona Ryder and Kirsten Dust. I certainly liked the "warmth" this movie emits, as well the leading performances. However, the plot seemed a little bit boring and disconnected to me. With the exception of one or two scenes it failed to provoke either my thoughts or feelings. Finally, something that I always seek in movies is good inspiring soundtracks and in this movie were mediocre at best.
The Big Short (2015)
If you are into finance this is the movie for you..
I have to admit that I have watched many "wall street" movies but none felt so real as this one. The fact that the script is based on a Michael's Lewis book obviously contributed significantly to that direction. In addition, the cast in this movie is amazing. I really appreciated the performances of Christian Bale and Steve Carell. However, what truly made this movie shine was the lively description of so many different little aspects of the finance industry. From the bargaining with clients and the worries of an investment manager that he will face devastating fund outflows to the greed and hubris of the biggest investment bank employees. Yet, despite the fact that there are many things in this movie that you can't understand if you are not strongly familiar with the finance industry, the end and the main message is unambiguous to anyone. In my opinion, this movie got a bimodal distribution of ratings with two means, 9 from people in the finance industry and 8 from the rest.
Milk (2008)
With a better soundtrack it could reach a 8..
Milk was a quite interesting and thought provoking movie overall. In my opinion, its best parts was the lack of cheap discrimination clichés and the solid performance of Sean Pean as Harvey Milk. I have to admit that I liked the persona of Harvey Milk and he would have definitely won my vote back in the 70's San Francisco. Nevertheless, this movie had a major flaw for me; the lack of a heart-touching soundtrack. Beautiful soundtracks can truly elevate a movie, and especially a drama. Unfortunately, this movie left me with no single memory of a melody. Another small that I would change would be a little more character development on secondary roles. But I am not the director anyways.. So all in all, nice topic, solid performances, nice touch avoiding cheap clichés but it did fail to inspire strong emotions. When I choose to watch a drama my ultimate and hidden hope is that I will need one roll of toilet paper to whip my tears off. Happened with Beautiful Mind, with American History X but not with Milk!
The Devil's Advocate (1997)
A pleasant surprise
I always remembered seeing the TV advertisements of the movie as a kid back in 1997 but I never actually sat to watch it until yesterday. Nice and interesting plot, top- notch actors performing well and a stunning Charlize Theron. However there were two things that were amazing in this movie and made me give it an 8 and not a 7. First the first totally unexpected jump scare scene in the dressing room. Even if you had the slightest idea about Al Pacino's true identity there was no way you were expecting this scare and that made it so unique and thrilling. The second thing was the ending. I do not always like ambiguous endings, especially when they are cheap and with no purpose, but the message of this one was truly thought-provoking. Vanity, oh vanity..
Jurassic World (2015)
Uninspiring at best..
I have many times wondered if the first Jurassic Park seemed so good to me the first time I watched because I was a kid and easily excited or because it was fundamentally good for every audience. I think that partially both reasoning are true. However, I am sure about one thing. Jurassic World would not receive a grade higher than 7 even from my child-self. Very predictable, less thrilling than the originals and the concept of genetically enhanced new species of dinosaurs ruined the original and unique touch of the first movies. If anybody wants to watch a monster movie I am sure there are more than plenty to choose. The only good thing about this film for me was the nostalgia felt in some scenes and the beautiful old soundtrack playing again. But that was pretty standard to expect, wasn't it?
Hardcore (2004)
Looked quite promising but lost in the way..
I remember seeing the trailer of this movie as a teenager and wanting to watch it for the sex/drug/violence scenes. After 12 years I remember that this movie existed by chance and decided to watch it. It started way better that I would expect, nice dark atmosphere, strange characters and dialog's and the nudity/drugs/violence combo that provokes. However, it started to get more and more boring after a while. No real character development, no real plot, no message to pass. One of the few positives was the performance by Danae Skiadi. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same her alter- ego in the movie Katerina Tsakalou. I considered her to be perfect for this role, since she always gets this kinds of roles in Greek TV, but her performance was quite plain and simple. It is a pity because this movie could have been way way better.
Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
Good music and nice sceneries do not necessarily make a good movie.. not even Emma Stone..
I decided to see this movie with low expectations after the initial critiques and hoped that I would still enjoy it since it is Woody Allen and Emma Stone. Unfortunately, this movie is quite boring, nothing particularly funny, nothing particularly touching or romantic, just nice music and sceneries. Performances look a bit fake at times and dialogues get monotonous as well. I cannot understand how a director like Woody Allen, who obviously does not care about some extra bucks, can produce such an uninspiring piece of work. The only good thing about this movie is that at least it is pleasantly and lightly watchable. You can easily watch it while taking your lunch a lazy Sunday noon.
