We Were Soldiers (2002)
Absolute Shocker!!! two out of ten
I find it disturbing that anyone can say this movie was over 1 or 2 out of ten. This movie is utter crap!!!
It is the most overdone piece of rubbish about the vietnam war, or any war for that matter, i have ever seen. It focuses on heroism like black hawk down yet someow fails to do so in a positive way, by having the blatant glorification very overdone.
It lacks realism to the point were it seems like a science fiction movie.
The combat was so terribly staged, completely lacking in realism. There is a part where a vietcong soldier somehow appears out of nowhere and bayonet charges at Colonel Hal Moore, the leader of the operation and get to within a meter of him where the Colonel(?),played by Mel Gibson ,spins around in time to shoot him in head. As you can may be able to gather events like this are all too common in this absolute disgrace of a film. Furthmore although the emphasis of this movie is placed on heroism, glory and sacrifice the film fails to capture any believable emotion unlike war flicks like the Thin Red Line(excellent film, must see)
Watch Rambo instead as both Rambo and We Were Soldiers are of the same substance but at least Rambo does not attempt to be something it isnt.
Fresh (1994)
Very dark and Real masterpiece
This movie both surprised and impressed me for all the right reasons. I noticed that the acting from Sean Nelson as Fresh was amazing, totally unfaltering. That kid must be from a bad area! There are very good performances from everyone involved especially Giancarlo Esposito. I don't really notice good acting unless it is truly excellent and in this case there is no doubt about that. The look of everyone and the area ( BK or the Bronx NY, i think?) was real convincing unlike many other ghetto movies.
The story encompasses a young black kid being a runner for drug dealers in NY working his way up, while the whole time he hates them and forms an elaborate plot to f*** them all up for their evil deeds!!! That is quite a poor summary I must admit but I can assure you the plot is very good, and not cliched like my summary might suggest.
Films do not get much better.
