The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Has a lot of potential, but...
...something didn't work out. The first half of the movie is so painful to watch that I actually face-palmed a few times. The "Robin Hood tape scene" was so forced that it should be a crime. Plus awful, awful acting made me feel like quitting. Luckily for me, I am not a quitter.
The last half of the movie almost made up for the rotten beginning. The plot evolves nicely and while the ending could be better, it wasn't as bad as I expected.
If you are looking for a psycho-thriller, there are better ones (i.g. 'Donnie Darko'), but this one isn't as bad as you would expect it to be.
Smiley Face (2007)
Stoner art
Now this, fellow stoner users, is a great stoner movie. Anna Faris, better known as the innocent Cindy Campbell from the Scary Movies franchise, plays Jane, who gets real stoned and has lots of important stuff to do.
The plot sounded nice from the beginning, but I wasn't expecting it to be so artistic. It's more of an adventure film rather than a comedy. It's something like... stoner adventure. Anyway, lots of funny moments here, great to watch when you yourself are stoned. Has an unexpected ending and oh, those situations... Haven't we all been there?
Plus, good soundtrack. Watch it with your friends.
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Heartbreaking
This is hardcore. Lars von Trier made this movie a very, very hard one to watch. Still, that's what is so remarkable about Dancer In The Dark.
First, it's a musical with alternative-music genius Björk. Her voice was stolen from an angel and in her only shot at professional acting, she was so natural that you actually find yourself in love with her character. The plot is really evil and the end... well, I won't spoil it for you. But if you're going to watch Dancer In The Dark, be ready to experience humanity at its worst form of emotional violence.
The musical parts are a bit too boring - except for the exceptional 'I've Seen It All', featuring Thom Yorke (Radiohead).
In summary, Dancer In The Dark is a movie that I will not see again so soon. It is heartbreaking. I have never cried because of a movie, but if I did, it would've been because of this one.
Oh, and it's a great way to get to know that freaky woman Björk. Buy her albums. She's great.
Iron Man (2008)
If you're a Marvel nerd, you'll have an orgasm
This is not, by any means, a must-see piece of art. This is not AT ALL a great film; but if you are familiar with the Marvel Universe, than this is an acceptable movie to see.
The casting is nice and efficient - Jeff Bridges is a good antagonist, lovely Gwyneth Paltrow is as graceful as you would expect her to be, and Robert Downey Jr. was the right choice to be the alcoholic playboy Mr. Stark.
However, the plot is just another superhero cliché, don't expect it to blow your mind. I enjoyed it because I am an assumed nerd. Nice soundtrack, hard rock/metal at its best.
Oh, and if you're a nerd too, I advise you to wait until the credits are over for a super cool cameo and the promise that something really big will come. ;)
