Gambit (I) (2012)
8/10
very enjoyable
29 November 2012
I really don't think this film deserves the poor reviews it has received! I have never seen the original so am not comparing this, simply judging it as a film in its own right. The cast is brilliant, I love Diaz, Firth, Rickman and Tucci so was never going to be disappointed! Yes it's a ridiculous caper movie, it's not meant to be taken seriously on any level! It's great fun, I was weeping with laughter at some of the hotel scenes, and that doesn't happen often in a movie! I'm not quite sure what some of the reviewers on this site were expecting, but I was thoroughly entertained! I came out with a smile on my face so in my books that's just fine!

Disappointing...
8 November 2012
I saw the first Silent Hill film never having seen/played the game and really enjoyed it as a stand alone horror film. I found it creepy, sinister and atmospheric with decent acting, pretty much all I ask from a horror film.

I saw Silent Hill Revelation, again after not being a fan of the computer game, and was very disappointed. The acting was really quite awful! It reminded me of some amateur dramatic stage productions I've seen, painful! On top of this the script was terrible, trite and unnatural, and delivered so badly! Sean Bean was the only decent one and even he wasn't great! The plot was pathetic, there was a final 'showdown' where as far as I could tell nothing much happened apart from a bit of sword swinging! I wasn't scared or creeped out once and I'm quite easy to scare! I wish I'd seen paranormal activity 4 instead!

quite lovely!

Having read the 2 reviews on here and seen some of the critics reviews I wasn't expecting a lot from this film. I'm a fan of peep show and Robert Mitchell in general so thought I'd give it a go and was pleasantly surprised! If you take this film for what it is, a light hearted comedy romp, it's actually quite enjoyable. Rufus Hound, who I have never heard of or seen before, was rather irritating to begin with in a Ricky gervais kind of way and I was worried this would ruin the film, but his character really grew on me and I think I was a bit in love with him by the end! The characters are all likable and amusing in their own ways and I'm sure some of them are fairly true to life, particularly the rich society women who are the "friends" of the mother of the bride! I found myself chuckling through a lot of the film and laughed out loud several times and left the cinema with a nice warm glow! It may not be a lasting classic but it's a fun, sweet and enjoyable film and I would give it 7/10

Insidious (I) (2010)

Good fun but not very scary
7 May 2011
I was expecting to be absolutely terrified by this film after reading many of the reviews on here. I am a huge horror fan and love to be scared (love eerie films such as the original Grudge, The Ring, The Others, Drag Me to Hell) and love being made to jump, so from that point of view I was very disappointed by this film.

I actually found the film pretty enjoyable, good fun and very amusing but not sure that was entirely the intention of the film makers... The acting was fairly ropey, especially from Patrick Wilson who I've not seen in anything else so not sure if he's a sound actor usually?? I love Rose Byrne and she certainly did her best with the material, but why do characters in horror films always act in such an unrealistic and nonsensical way??!! Would you be able to nod off to sleep quite happily on your own the night after witnessing very obvious signs of a haunting in your house?? I sure wouldn't!!

My husband and I are normally both very jumpy but neither of us jumped very much at all during this film. I did feel that the tension was built up quite well and loved the music but felt that the scares never really came to anything!! Maybe if I'd watched it at home on my own at night it would've seemed scary, but in the cinema surrounded by other people I wasn't remotely scared! I thought the story line was fairly good and it did maintain my interest but it just wasn't the scare fest I thought it would be!

Buried (2010)
8/10
claustrophobic and thought provoking
1 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't expecting this film to be set entirely within a coffin and nor was I expecting Ryan Reynolds to be much good. As it turned out I was wrong on both counts! Brief summary:Ryan is a contract driver in Iraq whose vehicle is attacked by Iraqis. He wakes up in a coffin buried underground with a few "helpful" tools...and so ensues a claustrophobic, frustrating and scary journey for both the character and the audience! I found Ryan's performance quite compelling and was almost living the experience with him, I even found myself holding my breath at times and feeling quite panicky! The fact that you can't see what is going on above ground adds to the tension and you are never quite sure what to believe.

I also found this a thought provoking film on another level. It's very easy to immediately dismiss the hostage takers as "the baddies" but I think this is a very shallow and naive view of human nature. It made me think, that transcending race, religion and nationality, what would any human be capable of doing in the their situation. These are sometimes hard working law abiding people who have seen their country torn apart by war, who have seen their children dying and who no longer have any other way of making money, and who see the Americans as to blame for this....not that I want to sound like I was on their side at all or that I condone it in any way, which I don't, but I found this film a very interesting study into human survival instinct and desperation.

A very good film, probably the best thing out at the moment, along with The Town, and definitely worth the ticket price.

And to the reviewer that felt this was a 95 minute terrorist propaganda movie, shame on you! You clearly misunderstood the entire film!
