Just finished watching After Earth and I liked it. It is not a bad movie at all. I really don't understand the hatred. Maybe people were expecting something else because of the trailers (I was at least) and got angry about it. Perhaps some bias towards M. Night Shyamalan. Originally I was expecting a huge Sci-Fi saga and is not like that at all. It is survival movie with a father/son relationship that needs work mixed with tiny bits of Sci-Fi universe. A decent movie, nothing spectacular, but decent enough. I had fun watching it, much better than a 4.8 score might suggest. I'm not a super fan of M. Night Shyamalan but I do enjoy most of his movies. The one of the killer trees was really bad though. But After Earth is one of the good ones, go watch it for what it is and you might have some fun.

What a great surprise!!!

I did not read the manga, but I did watch the entire anime a few years back. The anime had 2 full seasons to tell the story, the movie had just two hours. So clearly while it is not as rich as the anime, the movie does a very good job given the time restriction.
I had no expectations when I started to watch it, however after 15 minutes I was a believer, and even if I didn't know the story, still a pretty decent movie. Very nice FX and a high quality production to it.
As fiction flicks goes, it is not for everybody, but If you like the theme and/or anime/manga culture, go for it for sure. And the sequel is already in the works, so we will get our Gantz fix soon enough.
