James Bond 007: Blood Stone (2010)
007: What Stone?
Well if you've read the reviews it's just not up to scratch or maybe the reviewers need a good scratch. After seeing the MGM logo at the start I felt a little skeptical; its a video game not a film.
As usual Bonds opening scene delivers nothing less than the usual: you go from jumping out of a plane landing onto a terrorists luxury boat stealthily taking everyone out only to find the baddie is getting away; an incredible speedboat chase ensues, upon making it to land (red cars explode navy blue ones don't der) a car chase ensues ending with a hint of wit and charm between M (Judi Dench) and 007 (Daniel Craig). This lush opening scene with 007 clichés a plenty gives a good slathering of what is to come. The Bond music clip I kind of wanted to go for a little longer which is more than I can say for the story. Visually this game is epic its spectacular but it's been rushed once again it's a movie that just didn't know how to fit itself into a video game. It feels as though the director and the game devs were in a tugger-war over this one (the credits go forever btw) and as a result the game play is seriously patchy, environment interactions are inconsistent and misguiding, level scenarios feel cut and paste, the story was... somewhere there I just know it, and Bond has been shoved into the bottom left hand corner wtf? But there is a reason for this. It took two sleek car chases and finally a hover craft to sink in as to what they were trying to achieve here, on the hovercraft it felt like I was in the movie they had it spot on; incredibly well thought out and realistic mission objectives, incredibly realistic environment!, Ai that was not only communicating fluently with body language and facial expression but also unpredictable when appearing from cover this whole scene was amazing I was there I wasn't sitting in a cinema watching another 007 I was bond and it shat all over 3D I was immersed. All threw they try to replicate this wonderful experience (the hovercraft) but only coming close in the car chases except the ice one; I am not a penguin. In fact they flop all over the place it's been rushed need I say more and as usual its one of those games that leaves you frustrated not only because you love the brand' but because the game actually had so much potential e.g. the brilliant smart-phone user interface the super-licious slick melee, the fab sprint, stealth and of course Focus Aim which unfortunately felt like the only thing they managed to finish/ polish in this game. Speaking of finishing where was the story?! I am not much of an FPS the only recent thing I have been playing is LFD2 which I guess is why I turned to Bond I wanted a gripping story to sate my emotional cravings and it was there it's just they couldn't mesh it together in time. It should have worked they had everything. What they could of done was cut back on level scenarios, expand and enhance the environments for better game play immersion especially in 007 mode and get me connected to the story; get M to call me every once in awhile (out of cut scenes) and find me some romance and a bit more depth to the characters, no allot more they just appear randomly and act like you're supposed to know them? Don't bother with multi-player for obvious reasons unless I can have a friend go co-op with me as a 00 agent of choice in story mode. All in all I felt this game was worth my money but at the end all I got was a "Bond will return" ... Well I'm excited for him but he dumped me, we had great times, brilliant times but the only thing that will get me to buy this game again will be sparkling reviews i.e. Bond cleaning up his act or I won't be looking back.
If you're a Bond fan buy it when the price drops otherwise don't bother.
