Great show with some innaccuracies
27 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I read the book many years ago, and barely remember the first TV adaptation. This means I'm watching this new series for what it is, and very little, if any, expectations from either the book or the 1984 series.

Two episodes in, I was considering this to be an easy 9 stars, with the possibility of reaching 10 by the end of the series. The cast is excellent, landscapes are beautiful, wardrobe superb, and the dialogs captivating. I was very happy to hear each character speaking his original language instead of that silly thing many productions do by having everybody speaking in english with stupid accents (remember Allô, Allõ!).

And then, the show lost a star in my rating when a spanish character speaks in english with the englisman (who, at some point, claims to speak some portuguese). This becomes even more absurd when portuguese and spaniards speak english among themselves. And there are at least two portuguese actors who, again, speak english pretending to speak portuguese! Just pathetic and sad.

Another star was lost when the main character starts describing the world, and how the portuguese and the spaniards divided the world in two. The acting is great and with a strong emphasis on how presumptuous it was for those two countries to assume they could just own the world.

However, the historic innaccuracies are unacceptable in a show with so many resources available. How hard is it to do some research about the treaty of Tordesilhas?! They could've easily learn that it happened in 1494, about 100 years before the action of the show takes place and not 70 like mentioned by Blackthorne.

But that could be a minor mistake until they start talking about how the portuguese and the spanish kings are working together to control the world. That never happened because Portugal and Spain were always enemies. In fact, the english were allies with Portugal even though the first being protestants and the latter catholics. And that description by Blackthorne becomes even more incorrect because it ignores the fact that at the time of the action and for the previous 20 years, Portugal was being ruled by the spanish kings (until 1640)!

What a pity... This show could be quite better!

PS: after finishing watching the last episode, I reviewed my own rating and raised it to 9. Unlike many who were hoping for some great battle fought by vast armies like many other shows, Shogun finishes with an epilogue after an intense, multi stages, battle fought by a single woman. Epic!

Scientifically innacurate
24 February 2024
Scollars saying stuff like building skyscrapers is more sustainable, or that flying is the most efficient way of traveling, or that adding USD20 billions worth of new lanes will solve congestion in San Diego, is inaccurate at least. And it sets the trend to a show that pretends to be a documentary but isn't more than a slightly more interesting form of entertainment than some silly shows that fill up television schedules around the world. However, considering the show comes from Australia, I can understand why such XXth century concepts are so unwisely spread.

I skipped large portions of the first 3 episodes, and didn't try to watch the following ones. Watch it if you have nothing else to do and be ready to fast forward it.

RomCom heist...
4 January 2024
I was a fan of the original series, and watched all seasons with great enthusiasm. I wasn't expecting something as good as Casa de Papel, but I sure didn't expect to be so bored to the point of giving up watching it. Couldn't go beyond half of the second episode.

At least half of the duration of what I watched was the characters flirting with each other. All the clichés were there and it became so obvious and silly that I just couldn't keep going.

I guess because the crime action thief genre is getting over exploited, authors will go to the limit to try to make something different. In this case, it went overboard... over bored!

Obliterated (2023)

Deep in there, it's not that bad
10 December 2023
Many consider this a really bad show. Some reviews are nasty and trash the show, but miss the real gist: it's a padory!

Yes, many of the dialogs and scenes look and sound silly, or even absurd. But it's only because the goal of this series is to not be serious, in a genre where often dialogs and scenes are pathetic.

For those who don't understand what I mean, I suggest you watch another silly show about macho soldiers: SIX. Both shows are just entertainment, don't teach us anything, and could be propaganda for the USA.

The main difference between Obliterated and SIX is that the former doesn't pretend to be serious and realistic. It hyperbolates situations, dialogs and characters to emphasize just how dumb some shows like SIX are.

Whatch it if you want to have a good laugh, and to look under the silliness for the sometimes very smart critiques.

Dumb
8 July 2023
I watched about 20/30 mns of the movie and thought to myself: why am I wasting time watching these characters saying nonsensical lines which are supposed to be funny? They're just silly, and some of the dialogues seem to be there just to stuff the 2 and half hours... a bit like the 600 required characters for my review to be accepted.

I stopped watching it. Gave it 3 stars because I understand some people might like this kind of movie, as a way to procrastinate when hiding away from extremely unpleasant chores: emptying someone else's night potty? Cleaning up after too many drinks? ... it's just dumb!

It's ok if you can put up with the superstition
19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's an entertaining movie, with decent acting and mildly enticing characters. There are many nonsensical situations like all the cars and motorbikes, and the extraordinary (too much) fighting skills of a blind man.

What's hard to put up with is all the religious propaganda. Good vs evil: the blind man with divine protection faces a hoard of bad guys lead by an evil dude who wants to take advantage of the word of god to rule the world. It's always been like that! Religious leaders have been fighting for power for thousands of years, and they keep trying. The main tool, weapon, against them has always been knowledge, information and science.

So it's just absurd that out of all the important books written, so much relevance is given to a book of tales which has been such a huge obstacle to human evolution and peace.

The blindman who doesn't want to see
12 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
... is the one who most suffers.

It's a saying in portuguese which apply perfectly to those who refuse to admit that we need to change our way of life.

This show's tagline is "scentists... find solutions to save our way of life", which is to say that it misleads the viewers to believe that technology alone will solve the problems caused by our way of life.

The show points out the threats and lists many of the possible technological solutions to mitigate the consequences of natural disasters. But it fails obscenely by barely mentioning that many of these natural disasters are becoming more severe due to the way we live. Most people on this show induce the viewer in believing that we can carry on living the way we do, using up resources because technology will save us from having to cut down on our lifestyle.

I wonder who financed this show...

stupid supernatural stuff
21 May 2021
The story is quite enticing but, for some reason that I couldn't grasp, I paused it after episode 4. It's when it becomes supernatural and superheroes stuff. It's silly, and if I wanted something of the sort, I would've watched one of those Marvel series.

6 because it's quite thrilling untill episode 5. The ending is crap!

silly plot of the XXth century set in XVIth
20 March 2021
It was extremely boring and uninteresting, and couldn't watch beyond episode 1. It's like one of those many series about coming of age american suburbia teenagers set in a XVIth century scenario. Equally silly and with very little historical accuracy.

It's about friendship
6 February 2021
It's a beautiful story, with wonderful, imperfect human beings who try their best to be there for those who are special! Watching this while on a very strict lockdown (Jan 2021, Portugal), it makes you value your friends even more!

How one great actor can make such a difference!
26 December 2020
I didn't know much about the movie when I decided to watch it. Tom Hardy was the star, and it had a +7 rating on IMDB. And... that's it! Your hear other voices, but it's Hardy's character who's on the line, facing some life changing events, on different levels, and you're excited to see someone who seems to be a great, pure human being trying to make right a mistake, without just dropping everything else in his life. It might not work out the way he'd want it to go, but he's trully giving out his best! And Tom Hardy also is, and you hang on to every word of his and keep wondering if he'll keep his cool head or loose it and go crazy. No FX, pursuits or big action, just a great short story and acting!

Terrible!
20 December 2020
One star for each of the actors, and that's it! Story is silly and situations are absurd. Just a bunch of clichés mashed together and vomited together for you to waste your time. There were a couple of scenes that were so bad that I actually fast forwarded it. And I only made it to the end because I have this blockage that pushes me to watch a movie to the end, no matter how bad it is...

Epic story!
27 April 2020
Those expecting a grandiose production, with spectacular battles, expansive scenarios and sophisticated effects might as well look for the latest fast and furious or rambo movie. What you'll find in this series is a great story, with good acting, touching emotions and an extremely interesting and exciting plot that depicts what was life in Barcelona in the XIV century. Arnau, the main character, is such a kind, fair and valiant man that you'll wish you'd meet him someday. But don't expect him to be some knight in shining armour. He's also a man with many faults (or sins, for those who are catholic, because that's also a very important subject in this series), who suffers the consequences of his decisions like any other person. Not a superhero... just a man like we'd wish many of our rulers would be.

too dumb
29 March 2020
I only watched the first episode. I often like to track on google maps where these adventurers are going through. During the episode, they were careful enough not to show a precise route, and didn't even care to indicate what the finish point was. Just some beach where "nobody had driven to before them". They mention starting from San Felipe, Baja California, driving south to Sierra Santa Isabel, and then east, to the the Sea of Cortez / Gulf of California. Total distance is about 100kms. As it happens, their final destination can't be more then just 3 or 4 kms away from the Federal Highway 5 that follows the east coast of the Baja California. So, although it might be possible that no one has ever driven on that beach before them, there's a good reason for that. You can drive along the road and then hike to the sea. And if you want to go to the mountains, you could also go there, even with your car. But driving across desert and mountains to reach a beach, when you could drive down the road, because you want to pretend you're reaching some spectacular, secluded place is just dumb!

XIII: The Series (2011–2012)

too bad
18 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I got in touch with this series following Virginie Ledoyen. It was so bad I could even watch the full pilot episode.

The half an hour I watched wasn't more than a sequence of the typical clichés: tough guy gets beaten almost to death after kicking some ass, tough guy is the best and recovers miraculously, tough guy is a poor mistreated puppy who finds two cute chicks, etc...

The phony fighting sequence on the second meeting with Ledoyen's character was the drop that tipped the glass. They punch each other's face constantly, but no marks can be seen and, when he hits her with the pipe, she only gets a small cut on her eyebrow!?!? That's when I had to stop watching this nonsense.

I enjoy a good action series or movie, but it has to have a bit more than just the action, the chicks and the cars.

One star for each of the pretty ladies, and that's it.

only one fault
25 February 2008
I had this movie in my possession for a long time before I watched it. By now, I'm really sorry I didn't see it sooner.

It's a wonderful flashback to the summer holidays of your youth, wherever you spent them. It takes you to remember those days when you had no worries but to fully enjoy every new experience.

It's also a journey through your present days, when you pay more attention to money and career instead of appreciating the simple things of life.

And, finally, it makes you travel into the future, through your dreams of things to achieve, people to know and... to love.

If possible, watch it in good company, with a glass of wine and some nice cheese. I can only point out one fault... it's too short

can I vote with a below zero value
14 July 2005
This is simply one of the worst movies I have ever seen. This is not a B movie series, this is a Z movie. Lousy actors interaction, lousy CGI (final fantasy, where are you), and the more than predictable ending takes out any interest on the movie. The low budget shouldn't serve as an excuse to produce low quality movies. If you don't have enough money to build a sky scraper, you don't save on the concrete and all the other building materials. You just don't build it. I tried to give this movie a -10 vote but IMDb system only allows rates between 1 and 10. Let this be a warning to you. Just don't waste your time watching this movie.
