Black Magic (1949)
A Gypsy charlatan used "black magic" to get revenge.
I was a child when I saw this Orson Welles film and it would be fun to see again. I agree with other commentators that this film would be a good choice to be digitized and released on DVD...and, I would suggest that it would make an excellent addition to movies being offered by many libraries around the country.
Many people know that magic was one of Orson's hobbies...and he was very good at it. Several people have written that the magic tricks done in this film are by Welles himself.
Welles was a gourmand who eventually tipped the scales at over 300 lbs. And interestingly enough, he played in a film entitled "The Man Who Came to Dinner". Although he was not grossly overweight when he made "Black Magic"...he does often "fill the screen" with his ECU's (Extreme Close Ups).
Caveman Inki (1950)
The Myna Bird and Classical Music
Chuck Jones clearly liked using classical music. In this cartoon he used the same mysterious, black, myna bird as he did in several other cartoons. The bird, (whose appearance signaled a stop to whatever fighting was going on) was always accompanied by the same melodic phrase by the classical composer, Felix Mendelssohn. Anyone familiar with the works of Mendelssohn will recognize the music immediately. And, I suspect the reverse will also be true, i.e. anyone having seen the huge, black myna bird, with the bored expression, doing his silly hop to the music of Mendelssohn, will find it difficult to listen to this music again without conjuring up a memory of this curious bird.
Beyond the Blue Horizon (1942)
Review of a "preview" of "Beyond the Blue Horizon"
I would love to see a re-release of this film on DVD since I never saw the film....only the "preview"...which was in Technicolor.
The "preview" showed the central male lead dressed in a Tarzan type loincloth who swung out on a long vine as a giant elephant charged at him. The elephant went charging out over a huge cliff.
For a 7 year old kid, this scene was a memorable advertisement. Since I saw only the preview, I didn't remember the cast nor the plot.
The information provided by IMDb as well as the comments of others who have seen this movie have greatly added to my knowledge of the plot and cast.
Its been a long time, but I would surely like to see this film.
