The N.Y. Friars Club Roast of Chevy Chase (2002)
VERY Inappropriate
This roast never should have happened. A seemingly endless string of unfunny B-List comedy hacks were just downright mean. Roasts are supposed to be harsh but warm. That is easy to do when you know and love the roastee. But since none of those speaking knew anything about the man, it was just plain rude.
I have to give Chevy props. He actually stayed for the whole thing. I would have walked off the stage in the first five minutes. He had to sit there and listen to the unfunny, hurtful, and completely inaccurate portrayal of his career and life. When it was finally over, he stood up, looked directly at the camera, and said, "That hurt." He was absolutely crushed.
It was a very unfortunate evening for Chevy and everyone that knows and loves him.
Incident at Loch Ness (2004)
I enjoyed it!
I was fooled until the first "sighting". Until then, I was completely taken in by the performances of all of them. The tension between the producer and the director of photography seemed genuine. The producer's behavior was deplorable but I believed it having dealt with many producers who behave similarly. The changing of an engine was so far out there, but I figured there has to be a producer out there so clueless that he would want the same thing. I figured that the captain just lied to him to shut him up. When the bikini came out, I had a feeling something was up because it was so bizarre. If their intention was to fool until the end, that was a bad idea. That is what put me on the lookout. Then, since I do not believe in Nessy, the first shots of the water disturbance made it obvious. After that, it all made sense and anyone could tell it was a put on. But, I have to say that because I was taken in by the whole process up until then, I really enjoyed it. Jeff Goldblum has that unique ability to make anything he says sound totally unscripted. Complete with the "uh, you know"s. Overall I really enjoyed the movie and after the first time through, I went back and watched it again knowing it was a put on. It was even more entertaining. Well done!
