Cocaine Bear (2023)
6/10
Too much gore, not enough good writing, but...
2 May 2023
In the right hands this could have been so much better. There was too much gore, and not enough good humor. I wouldn't say don't watch, but be aware that it won't be a movie that lands in the top 10,000.

The bear was great. This kind of animation is super. Kudos to all the animators who do such great work. I am impressed with the training and amount of work it takes to create such impressive digital work.

Bottom line: if you have a few drinks, a few good friends, and some time to kill, you can be entertained for a quite a few minutes. It's not for everyone but, for folks who like variety, are open minded, and not opposed to a some ever-present gore this is an acceptable diversion.

Cheers, plumcreative.

Cyrano (2021)
10/10
One of the most powerful romances I have ever seen.
4 June 2022
This is a romance that hits you in the head and heart- not the loins.

So many movie makers today feel the need to include graphic or seductive sex scenes which often diminishes any real romance. The writer, directors, actors, and everyone involved in this production have created something that demonstrates real love- not lust.

This story is about connection and conviction. We don't need to see the characters bumping and grinding to feel the strength of their feelings. Words are so much more powerful and lasting.

Peter Dinklage is amazing as the intelligent and sensitive Cyrano. A man who feels he does not have enough to give but really has so much more than anyone else. Cyrano loves Roxanne deeply and only wants what is best for her so he makes sacrifices for her.

Not many movies can make me tear up anymore but this one did. I saw it on a plane returning from Europe and the flight attendant asked if I was OK because I was crying. I get depressed sometimes when I see all the crap going on in the world- selfishness, inconsideration, greed- things that seem so thoughtless and evil. This film helped renew hope in me that there are still people out there who understand what is important in life.

Cudos to everyone involved in making this movie. Superb acting, beautiful vocals, excellent timing, inspired direction, moving writing, and editing that brought it all together wonderfully.

I will be disappointed if this doesn't win many awards.

Cheers, Amy.

Hereditary (2018)

Random and confusing
10 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why Toni Collette is in this movie. She is better than this. The movie was so far out there that it made no sense. If these people have all these terrible things happen in their lives why are they not seeing a therapist to help them get through it. If there was really Satan worship going on then there should have been some more explanation. It just seemed to be a bunch of random gross and shocking imagery and happenings strung together. And, if the satanic ritual really was a success will they get all the riches or whatever they were after? What was the meaning of the miniatures the main character was making? Why was she climbing around on the ceiling? That was particularly bizarre. The entire movie was just too random and confusing. I'd give it a 0 if I could.

I liked it.
20 June 2019
I think maybe people who rated this low were expecting too much. This was definitely on the stupid side but I am pretty sure that is what they were going for- not an Oscar winning movie- and I think it was funny enough to entertain without pretending to be anything that will make it onto top 10 lists. It was silly and funny. All the actors are great and all have good comic timing. They made it work. This is one of those movies that I've never heard of but am glad I stumbled across it. There are some really bad movies out there which claim to be funny but so many are crude or childish. This one was cute and non-offensive. If you don't watch expecting too much I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Give it a try. Cheers Amy

Most interesting thing I've seen in a while
31 January 2019
This is different. Sometimes different is not very good but this one was just weird enough to be interesting. The characters were snarky and anti social and, although not completely relatable, they say the things that many of us think but don't have the guts to say out loud. (Of course, as I get older, my filter is becoming much less effective. One of the perks of getting older which I really like). I am pretty sure many of my close friends won't like this movie but I found it thought provoking and laugh-out-loud funny. I like that the characters say the meanest things but neither is fazed by it. They just roll with it. In a way they are like an old married couple who accept each other's faults. I wouldn't call this my favorite movie but it might make my top 500. Cheers, Amy

The Double (2013)

Pretentious and boring
11 January 2019
Very pretentious and incredibly boring. I kept waiting for the ah-ha moment. I'm still waiting. My sister doesn't dislike this as much as but also found it pretentious and boring. She also went to sleep through parts. If only I had been so fortunate. We were expecting better. Cheers

Interesting costumes
30 December 2018
I haven't seen a movie I disliked this much in a while. The costumes, sets, scenery, and acting were all very good-- unfortunately it was all wasted on a plot that kind of just dwindled down to nothing. (It did encourage me to do some reading about Queen Anne, so I guess that is a good thing.) I've not yet read any other reviews because I didn't want them to influence what I wrote- so I will be very curious to see what the high-raters said. Maybe the filmmakers were shooting for something "arty" and missed. If that was the goal it did not go far enough or get weird enough. It just seemed like a movie with a plot that went nowhere. Bottom line: All the talent and beauty in this film is wasted on a movie that should be so low on any list that no one would ever get to it. Cheers

Could have been good
22 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is decent and Christian Slater is certainly right for the role of headhunter/stalker. He comes across as creepy and charming all at the same time. Unfortunately the plot got to the point where you were asking "This guy Ben is supposed to be smart? I wouldn't hire a guy that is this stupid." There were so many ways he could have extricated himself. Record almost any of their phone conversations, have other people listen to their conversations, get the security company involved earlier and turn the tables, tell anyone/everyone what the guy was doing to him, etc. His boss, with brain tumor, even told him early on how the headhunters will often stop at nothing to recruit-- including bugging and hidden video (including a video camera in pen). Why the heck would he take a pen from the psycho or let his daughter have a gift from him after being told that? And why did he not scan for bugs and video cameras in his home and office much earlier? It makes one wonder if anyone even read this script before they started shooting. With a few changes it could have been an OK movie-- instead of making me sad for having wasted time on it. Toward the end the use of the cool high tech tracking system was kind of too-little too-late and pointless-- but even at this point he could have sent the police to his house to catch him breaking in. Using the tracking system would have made more sense earlier on. So bottom line: not worth your time. Feel sorry for the cast because there is no way they could have saved this picture with such a badly written plot.

The Intern (I) (2015)

Sweet, fun, and funny
26 September 2015
Not sure why critics did not rate this movie higher. It was sweet and funny. It made me laugh and tear up a little. I am glad I ignored the critics.

It has the feel to me of sweet funny romantic comedies of the late 30's and 40's but it isn't a romance.

The focus is on an older guy and how he relates to younger people— and visa versa. It reminds me of people I know, both young and old, who are open to listening and learning from each other.

Robert DeNiro was good. Not stellar but solid.

Anne Hathaway was also solid and seemed a little bit more comfortable in her role than DeNiro.

This is the kind of movie I like. Somewhat like real life with a mostly happy ending. The story was not all light and happy— it had sad parts— but that is life. Finding the good things in life and not letting the bad overwhelm you is really what it all about. Cheers
