Fantastic Fungi (2019)
Looks good, but not really a documentary
As a biologist I was happy to finally see the fungal kingdom get some much needed attention. What happens below our feet is truly amazing and deserves to be known. I took the semi-spiritual intro speech for granted and enjoyed the nice CGI. However, after 15 minutes I could not bare it any longer and turned it off. They mixed good facts with statements that I know could never have been proven through a controlled experiment. That these 'facts' were brought by people with a psychedelic gleam in their eye didn't help. I would have respected their format if they didn't present it to be scientific. The fact that they mix science with pseudo-science and wishful thinking actually makes it worse, because it is harder to tell what part is true and what is not. If you want to watch it, do it for the images.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Would have been better without the last five minutes
The movie felt well balanced until 5 minutes before the end. She had some revenge, saw some people were regretful, and others didn't care. In the end she overplayed her hand, and it shows one can be still be right, but tragically fail. I guess that the ending of the movie portrays that there are only losers in this kind of affairs. I'm personally not offended by the sexist portrayal of men in this movie, it's just a movie.
History of Swear Words (2021)
Not too shabby
My first impression was that Nicolas Cage aged like a fine wine, performing some choice acting in the opening of the show. At a certain point they go to the history of a word, which is as you can guess mostly lost in time. Later they mix in the opinion of semi-famous people about swearwords, which I don't really care about. They could have added in the most famous occurrences in pop-culture but I guess that might have gotten too expensive. In conclusion, its not very bingable, but good enough to watch an episode every now and then.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
I liked it
I enjoyed watching this episode a lot. I understand from other reviews that there are quite some inconsistencies, but this is mostly inevitable while ending a series and tying loose end together.
Everyone rating this 1 star must be a sweet summer child. After seeing Lost no series can disappoint me any more.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Not a red wedding 2
All I have to add to the reviews that are already up there is the following:
According to critical reviewers, more main characters should have died in the battle and GOT has lost its realism.
However, what makes GOT so exiting is not the fact that so many main characters die, but the fact that you know they can kill most characters at any moment while watching.
I was waiting for main characters to die during the battle, and this increased the suspense all the way until the end. The fact that I now now most main characters live does not take away the pleasure and excitement I had while watching the episode.
And for those who want to see main characters die; stay tuned for the next 3 episodes
