Rio (2011)
Rio is no Ice Age; Yet decently entertaining
What is the one thing that binds all children's movies? predictable plots but of course there are those that make predictable fresh (SHREK. Rio however shies from any experiment in the plot whatsoever. The end of the movie can be deciphered in the first 5 minutes.
That said the movie is overall very enjoyable if you go with it. There are too many moments where u just want to laugh out loud. A word of caution thought; Rio is no ice age. Its written OK; its the action that makes it enjoyable
The animation is superb (nothing less expected). The city of Rio de Janeiro is multi facetly captured (there is a lot more to it than the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer)and the use of color throughout the movie is beautiful.
About the cast and the characters, despite all of them giving a good performance there is not one character who is memorable. One may relate to the protagonist Blu but thats as far as it goes in making an impression. The two human ones are outrightly boring. Voice over is not that big a deal unless u really put yourself into the animated character (Take note Anne Hathway)
The music is pleasant but none of the tracks are going to find their way into my playlist
Overall the movie is worth a watch. Its funny, not so smart and has a great lesson.
No Strings Attached (2011)
No strings attached has no USP
I will not waste time on the plot.....everybody knows it.....can friends with benefits stay without falling in love???? we also know how the movie will end as is true for most movies in this genre.
What however makes predictable plots click is the characters and the humor. However no strings attached lacks memorable characters or memorable moments. Most characters are stereotypical. We see ashton kutcher doing what he does All THE TIME these days i. e play a love sick puppy while natalie portmen stars as his "commitment phobic" sex friend. Yes we understand that for too long the guy was commitment phobic however that is no reason for every rom com movie to portray a commitment phobic girl thinking that its different. Its not anymore.
There is some chemistry between the leads (esp the first time they hook up) but that alone is not enough to save you from yawning and waiting for the intermission.
The supporting characters are all blah except for......no wait they are all BLAAAAAAAAH
I would only recommend this movie for people who wanto take a quick nap in the theater
Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011)
Good fun, slightly violent + great star cast
When I saw the posters of the movie on BEST buses I thought I knew that yeh saali zindagi was a stereotypically bollywood with no substance. Couple of good reviews later I went to watch it.
Yeh saali zindagi doesn't have much of an interesting story but the cast more than makes up for it. They work splendidly together and individually. Irfan Khan's constant commentary is fresh but the constant use of the phrase yeh saali zindagi gets a little irritating. The harsh language may be an issue for some but it works with the plot.
Arunoday makes his presence felt in spite of the fact that the movie is mostly about irfan khan. The constant chemistry between his character kuldeep and aditi rao's shanti leads to one of the best kisses in Indian cinema (Emran Hashmi can now find a tutor in arunoday).
Chitrangda Lights up the screen with every scene she is in. All she needs to do is smile and even the women go weak in the knees. She uses her beautiful brown eyes in a way that makes the gangster movie all warm and feminine.
I definitely recommend this movie (not for your DVD collection though). It is fun, abusive and romantic all at the same time
127 Hours (2010)
Boring mostly + too many frills
When your entire cast is basically one person and when the entire movie is just one incident it is difficult to make it interesting enough or entertaining enough. That said i did not enjoy 127 hours much. Yes it is interesting in parts especially in the beginning and towards the end. Some of the scenes seemed like they were added simply to increase the lenght of the movie and that really doesn't work.
As far as the director goes i personally think that danny boyle is overrated. slumdog billionaire is an ordinary movie,it has some substance but for the most mart it doesn't deserve the credit it got.
The music in 127 hours is good but not great. The camera work is too flashy. flash works in bits but it is certainly overdone here.
Finally James Franco delivers a good performance which makes the movie worth a watch
The Green Hornet (2011)
flimsy plot...yet worth a watch
I have read some of the reviews given to this movie by others and GUYS YOU ARE BEING UNFAIR. Yes the plot is not convincing.....nor is the character kato who is midas at everything he does but if u go expecting only to be entertained and not some superhero saving-the-world type of movie it is decent fun.
The film is honest about itself. It doesn't promise anything more than good fun and that is where it does deliver. Christopher waltz as chudnovsky lights up the screen every time he appears and honestly i wanted to see more of him than seth rogan or cameron diaz who i think is just playing a cameo. The love triangle is also bland as there is no real chemistry between any of the leads.
This is not a movie you want to add to your DVD collection but it also doesn't deserve that many harsh reviews
